We spent 4 days camping at Broadwater near Ingham in North Queensland and were advised to take our own firewood on the government website. So I used a third of my trailer space just to fit enough wood which was a huge pain. Now when cyclone Yasi came through it had felled most of the trees in the Broadwater state forest. So as we were driving the 16km of dirt road into camp I was shaking my head as there was enough fallen wood in the area to last campers for the next 1000 years ???. What a joke that you could not collect it. As for the threat of an extremely intense bushfire in the area, well you could reduce that 400 fold by allowing campers to use some of it for our God given right to have a campfire in our own back yard.
    The rant will continue >:(

Does anyone know why authorities dont allow you to collect fallen wood? Where we camp in NSW have asked ranger this question the only answer he could give was we dont want people cutting down trees. Doesnt seem like a very good reason to me we all know what green timber burns like. Am i just having a whinge just getting sick of rules & regulations ???

Its to do with natural habitat for animals.

Collecting wood
The removal of firewood from public and government land is restricted.
• Collecting firewood from National Parks in South Australia is illegal
• You must have permission from the relevant council to take firewood from roadsides, and from the landholder to take firewood from private land
• You need a permit from Forestry SA to take firewood from Forestry SA plantations

Remember it is fire danger season until end of April, so you can't have a fire anyways.

Roadside collection in most council areas is SA requires a permit, which naturally has a fee.

on my last trip, i made a  potbelly from a 9kg cylinder and took a cpl of wheat bags packed with redgum from the firewood place ($20). The cylinder ensures you get good efficiency and top up when/ if the opportunity presents.

Typically most laws are there to guide the very small percent who are unruly and stupid. And those who lack common sense.

Don't take it personally.

Crackacoldie is spot on... No fires during fire danger season.
We normally camp at Southend in the bush camping ground where fire pits exist but no fires are permitted until end of April :police:

Not so, on days when there is not a total fire ban in the district you are in, you can have fires below the low tide mark (or high tide, can't remember) on beaches, but depends on where you are. If you are in a National/Conservation/Recreation Park, no go.

Hi Marschy
I thought from 1st December to the 31st march you can't have a fire without a permit  no matter where you are in SA

Just had a look on the CFS website, which tells you what you can or can't do,most parks and government reserves you can't have a fire during the ban season, but it is interesting some areas you are allowed a campfire without a permit during the fire ban season as below (not on total fire ban days)

Can I have a campfire?   YES
Providing:

the fire is in a 30 cm deep trench and no more than one square metre in area;
you have a four-metre cleared space around and above the fire;
a responsible person is in attendance at all times with water and/or an extinguisher
NO   Unless you have a Schedule 10 permit from your local council.

Forget the fire thing. Some parks in SA have banned camping altogether during the summer fire ban period.

Tried to get info on the  subject of fires from the Info centre at Mt Gambier last week.
The info they had was a Vice CFA brochure.   They didn't realise it wasn't S.A. Until I pointed it out to them...  :/

Unless you're burning magnesium, good luck getting a fire going below the low tide mark!
