Where to buy a custom made awning
« on: December 18, 2012, 11:43:08 AM »
We are trying to get a custom made awning made locally and it is proving difficult so I have a few questions.

What is the material/canvas that the ARB/Chinese/Tigerz etc etc 4wd awnings are made out of?

We are going to make or have someone make us a very simple and easy to put up awning made from this material or something similar.

Instead of using the usual pole structure under our heavy canvas awning we are wanting something that will velcro to the main tent and simply use a couple of poles and guy ropes to put up. It will be ideal for overnighters or anytime we dont want to spend the time required to do the full pole structured annex.

Any ideas as to what material that stuff is and who would do a simple job like this for us??

The local guy quoted us $12 a metre for some synthetic material that would most likely do the job we want, which is very reasonable, but he wanted $500 to sew two lengths together and put velcro around it, which i thought was a bit rich. Any suggestions? Or am I a bit out of touch as to what a simple sew job should cost?

I think you HE might "be out of touch" ... we wanted 1m x 1m dog beds (similar to a couch cushion - the flat ones) made from canvas ... price per dog bed ... $240 ... without foam inserts.  We opted for a ready made thing from a lady who makes horse rugs and the likes.  $39.95 including postage.

I have an OzTrail awning on my car. I wanted an extension made.
My local camper trailer mob, sat down with me and nutted out what I wanted and what they could make for me.
I ended up with 2.5 x 2.5 extension, one side has rope to go into the sail track on the awning, eyelets at 2m out, and on the end.
The theory behind this is, I can use the extension as a wall on my awning, or a longer roof, with a 500mm extra awning to block sun, wind etc..
This all came (as a first run as they had never been asked this before) with poles etc, and a custom bag to put it in, for just under $300.00.
Expensive compared to the awning itself, but first use was at TuffTruck 2012 with my youngest, two swags, table and chairs, all under cover for the weekend.

Awesome.

So, Danny, to answer to one of your questions $500.00 IS rich. The above was made from quality canvas, and while not the same as the awning, colours was close enough for me.

Not intentionally advertising

Dave at DR Marine in South Hobart has done a few canvas repairs for me. He seems pretty good at this type of thing (the marine name is a bit misleading he does lots of land based camping gear).

He may be able to at least let you know if that is what it will cost.

I have used "budget bedflys"before for custom stuff.

Really happy with their work.

Thanks for the replies, I thought as much.

My wife loves sewing but it is probably to big of a job to do at home on the kitchen table but if I cant find anyone to do it for something we can afford then we may have to have a crack at home.

Ill give DR Marine a call early next year and see what he says Randall and Ill also have a look into the bedflys mob. Thanks peoples.

I just spoke to DR Marine, he is definitely the man who we are going to go with.

Very switched on, larger range of materials for us to choose from, labour was less than half the price of the others and a nice bloke! Well done Randall, I mentioned your name so pop in and grab your commission ;)
