Free/Cheap camp areas - safe to leave camper?
« on: December 03, 2012, 08:06:58 AM »
How safe is it leaving the camper trailer in national parks/free camp areas when out for the day?  We're looking at staying somewhere around 1770/Agnes Waters (Bustard Bay is looking good), but one day we're taking the kids out on the Lady Musgrave Island Cruise, and just want to know how safe it is to leave the camper?  Naturally all the valuables will be coming with us in the vehicle, and we'll padlock the doors on the camper and chain the wheels to the draw bar.
Cheers

Just unpack every item you have and leave it lying about. No one will want to pack it all up, and your CT will be perfectly safe.

We usually try to make freinds will others around us when we camp, then they'll keep an eye on your set up when youre gone.

I free camp a lot and always feel a bit vulnerable leaving my stuff back at camp and to make matters worse, im even too lazy to pack it up so its all lying around in view... i just make sure the fridge full of beer is in the car, the rest i can live without if push comes to shove.

We have just left our camper back at Bendeela, Kangaroo Valley. We made sure we camped near some caravanners and had a chat.

A security sign similar to this and located next to your camper could help to avoid undesirables  ;D

Mate,

Bustard Bay area should be OK. The Deepwater area has surf and the local ferals prey on unwary campers/visiters. I don't think they go to Bustard much.

As others have said, chat with the other campers there and ask them to keep an eye on your camp.
Cheers,
Mick
