Upgraded to Telstra 4g wireless modem.
« on: November 24, 2012, 07:54:05 AM »
Upgraded our 3g Telstra wireless modem to the 4g a few weeks ago. Although we live outside the CBD the coverage map said we should get it.  We were using an ADSL line and a modem/router for our home computers but thought if the 4g worked Ok I would get a 4g router and get rid of the ADLS, saving some money.
Very happy with the 4g and the router works a treat.  What was very interesting is the difference an antenna makes.  We had one that we take on our trips for the phone and the wireless modem and the patch lead also fitted the 4g.  Below are the speed tests before and after the antenna was fitted.
I am still waiting to see how it performs before I cancel the ADSL.    Kevin

I changed all our site manager laptops from 3G to 4G a while ago.  A very noticeable difference between the two and now when we have a job where there is no 4G available it really stands out.

4G is bloody incredible that is for sure.  Have you tried at different times of the day, at times we find 4G awesome but at certain times of the day.  Especially after 5pm it's terrible, and drops out a lot.

I am curious about this antenna.  Might have to look into it.  Incredible speeds!!

The crazy thing is, not 10 years ago it would take 2 hours to download 3mb.  Now you can get 3mb without even waiting.

Great stuff.

Without the antenna the speed would be different throughout the day and did drop out once or twice, but with the antenna no problems and the speed seems fairly constant.

The antenna is similar to just one of these - see photo. Magnetic base and I have just put it on the house roof and cable goes through the window to where the router and modem are.  Yep, makes a big difference.  Like I said, we originally got it for travel, but a bonus now with the 4g at home.    Kevin

We used our 4G on our recent trip, never even needed the antenna. Reception was great in places like Broken Hill, William Creek, Mungerannie, Birdsville to name a few.

That is interesting.  The Telstra sales people told me the 4g will get better reception then the 3g, but I thought that was just sale's talk. I could not see how it could.  They said 4g coverage is still limited, but you should get the 3g network.    Kevin
