Portable Air Conditioners
« on: October 22, 2012, 04:34:40 PM »
Hi, Just wondering if anyone has good or bad opinions on using these types of air cons in Jayco Campers?
Or are the permanent roof types a better option? Looking at something like this non evilbay.

Can't help you with one of those ... we use a spray bottle and a fan.  Couple of things to consider are how you are going to run it and where it's going to live in the scheme of things.

Regarding any mobile refidgerated air conditioners.

You will need to vent the exhaust out. All will have a container inbuilt to catch the moisture from the air. Once this is full the unit will turn off and you will needd to empty the container before it will start.

They do not work in high humidity areas as the container fills up in no time.

I use one.

I would, however buy one with vent openings that face forward and not upwards.
We just run the exhaust pipe out to underneath the camper trailer. I removed the little swivel wheels at the bottom and if fits snugly into the back of the Jeep Cherokee.

For the condensation: Do away with the bucket at the bottom and buy a see through pipe at bunnings. Connect the pipe and run it with the exhaust pipe to the outside.

Took it with this past January to Moore River. It was 30 od degrees at night but close to 21 degrees inside our camper trailer. Slept like a baby and woke up very refreshed the next morning.

Obviously this wont work if there is no 220Volt supply. It draws waaaay too many Amps.

Thanks for the replies Kit_e and fellas. It's all taken on board. I would like to hear from people about the roof mounted ones which
is probably the better but dearer option. I camp on my own a lot so taking up room in the tray is not a hassle for me but moving the
unit in and out of the Jayco would be.
Cheers
