If its Selleys It may not work.
« on: October 02, 2012, 08:09:30 PM »
Below is a comment I sent to Selleys Re: their new Selleys Kwik Grip Advanced.
Just posting this so others are aware of its possible shortcomings. Its not the same as Kwik Grip.
I used it to glue car carpet to the upper side of a marine ply false floor in my Prado.

Quote
I was looking in Bunnings for your original Kwik Grip, the brown liquid but as there was none in stock I was told by a staff member there that your new product was stronger and had no odour.
I purchased a 500ml tub and used it to glue car carpet to marine plywood. I had used the old product to glue cotton backed vinyl to the underside of the plywood with excellant results.
Sadly I cannot say the same for your new contact glue. I followed you instruction using the 500ml to glue the two materials as each surface was just over 1 Sqm. The glue has failed to bond the two together and comes apart with very little effort where the older product has bonded the two together firmly.
I am now left with possibly having to purchase new carpet and try to glue it with something else.
If I have to go this path what will
1: remove the Kwik Grip Advanced.
and
2: Can I still get your old Kwik Grip that I know works.

I am disapointed in spending $18 on a product that clearly does not do as it claims.

Regards

Hate it when money is wasted on crap products. I used liquid nails for carpet to chip board. Worked really well

Sparksy

Although I dont know what you carpet was made of, Im guessing if it was polypropolene it wont stick, as per their website . http://www.selleys.com.au/trade/specialist-products/contact-adhesive/kwik-grip-advanced#applications-tips
I know this doesn help you now.

Id use Liquid nails or similar to glue it down. Im not sure If there would be a need to remove it from the carpet tho.

Cheers Chippy :D

Yeh I think I might have to peel it back a few inches all the way round and peel off the glue and stick it down with liquid nails.

Unfortunately I took the guy at Bunnings as knowing what he was talking about ( yes I know that was a big mistake) and that Selleys products with the same name would have the same properties, again a mistake in hindsight.
Ive secured the front edge down with a strip of ali angle so all I may have to do is the edges.
I didnt think that the type of carpet would matter as Ive used the old Kwik grip for years with great success.

Well as they say you live and learn, just hope others may learn from it as well.
Besides the hassles the floor should come up well, cut a section out of the ply so can still use the right hand 3rd row seat if needed as well as the fridge being in place.

when your in bunnings next, go to the carport/tiles section. You can get glue for the fake grass. make sure you get the right notched trowel but. I glued some carpet to the alloy floor of my trade body. Its solid as a rock still.

Selleys were quick to reply to my email basicly saying what Chippy mentioned and sugested scraping the crap glue off cleaning with acetone and reglueing with the solvent based contact.
They also posted out a $20 bunnings voucher to cover costs so they were really great for that.
I ended up peeling back about 100mm all around edges and used as Chippy and Wyno suggested, water based Liquid nails.
That seems to have worked.
Will put it back in the prado with the slide bolted in and post a few pics.

Selleys are probably responding to legislative moves to ban toluene/volatile hydrocarbon type glues (the ones that get you high). Probably not in Oz, but most likely the EU or the States, in which case we simply follow the leader with such legislation. Happens all the time.
