bloke in my club has been quoted by Nissan $6500 to replace timing chain etc on his 2.5... 30+ hrs labour...

FFS surely this isnt a correct price.

Why would they fit it with a goddam timing chain?

30hrs has to be BS surely. 

Mercy an engine R&R should be no more than 8hrs

Begs the Question,  why does the timing chain need replacing Did it break?  It shouldn't, but then, this is Nissan we're talking about   (alright, settle down - i joke...)   
That's one of the advantages of a chain over a rubber belt - not having to change it as part of regular maintenance.

$6500 - 30hrs    must be paying to train a dozen apprentices -  tell em he's dreamin'

in his words, its common on them to get a *rattle* in them which is the chain or tensioner (this is the same shire/region that the bloke that got stuck in Cairns in the Jackaroo recently who had issue with the dealer not replacing the tension when he did the chain)...

So he did the job himself in the end... took 4 days (not all day after work stuff) with no manual... Still cost him a wack in parts.


Turns out the mechanic was wrong - it was an alternator bearing... nothing to do with timing chain stuff.

I had a timing chain replaced in my old 80 series Landcruiser. it was done with a regular service, it took 1 day and $700.00 (including service). Nissan must be kidding

The timing chain of the R51 don't needs to be replaced at all, only if it breaks.
But as you said, it was the bearing.
Still a lot of money they wanted for it.

I would suggest that he needs to get on PCOA and search for similar threads. I've not heard of the R51's having an overly expensive timing chain replacement - it's possible the dealer just didn't want the job, so quoted high. Being a dealership with pretty-much guaranteed work ahead of them, they have that luxury.

I've had the timing belt done on our R50 Pathy, and prices varied wildly. Local dealer wanted $1600, Ultratune, etc, could do for $1200. Our good independent mech did the job for $800 - which is only one of the reasons why we use him. Pays to shop around if you get a high quote.

Glad to hear he did it himself, unfortunate to hear it didn't resolve the issue.

They guys doing the head on my CRD ZD30 said that teh Nissan service guide thing says the job would take 18hrs....................they thought that was not going to be do-able.

But having said that they are putting a new chain, tensioner and pulley on mine whilst it's all apart. Somaybe Nissan think the chain does get noisy. The timing chain in my SR20 pulsar had 400 000klms on it and it was never changed nor was it noisy. The timing chain on my 80 had 330 000klms on it and it was never changed and it wasn't noisy either.

I guess they just don't make them like they used to. Or petrol motors don't stretch chains but diesel ones do......
