Lawn Hill/Adels Grove

Hi Everyone,


I am heading out to Lawn Hill NP and Adels Grove next month. As you cant use a generator there I was wondering if anyone has used solar panels there? I have been told that there is a lot of shade and solar panels will not work very effective there. I am not sure how reliable  my source of info is.

At Adels Grove, there are two areas. One with a lot of shade (not much chop for solar panels) and the other that is fairly open and generators are OK. At least that was a couple of years ago.

Mr McGirr knows all in this region.

in the unpowered section beside the water where we stayed last year it was quite shady, but you do get some sun there also, just depends on the time of day. you'd have to chase the sun due to the trees, some places it wouldn't be worth the effort IMHO. below is a pic of our camp at Adels down beside the water, it's about as good as you'd get for sun i guess. most of the other areas i remember were alot more shaded, though i'm sure there could possibly be somewhere more open i don't remember.

Correct what Estelle and rumpig mentioned.

If you wish to run a generator you camp away from the river in another section. If you wish to camp near the water and run solar panels you have to try and find a spot with some sun.

There are no designated area near the water you just camp where you like. The toilets and showers are located between the 2 camping areas.

Also before you get into Adele's grove on the left is a small hill and you will see a track going up it. This is a great lookout at sunset.

Haven't been to Lawn Hill for 20 yrs, but the nat park area right at the gorge was terrific......sort of grassy.....plenty of shade ( or sun if preferred )

After camping on the dust and dirt elsewhere, Adeles Grove just didn't look appealing.........but things may have changed in the last 20 yrs  ??  ( but by the look of it, Adeles hasn't )

The national park sounds like its changed drastically. The sites are now distinctly marked with wooden posts and are only gravel / rocky ground. No generators are permitted there either. Adel's grove on the other hand is an oasis. As the others have said there's the 2 distinct sections. Down by the river is grassier and more shaded, but generators aren't allowed in this section.

I'm a lucky bugger I guess... I only live about 100km from there so it's kind of like my back yard for now!

I think I will take the solar panel and see how we go. We can get 3 days without recharging the batteries, so I think even with just a bit of sun we should be able to keep topped up hopefully.

Depending which way your heading try and visit kingfisher camp. Nice grassed sites

Ive been there 3 times now, its a fantastic spot. First time we camped up in the sunny generator spot. It was hot, not much shade and not real nice. Last two times has been down in the "Grove", its a oasis, could stay there forever. Just pick your spot for abit of sun for solar or do as some do and remove your battery and take it and the genny up to the genny area for a charge up.

Spot on Russ, Optus and Telstra. I think you have a beer in your right hand and the phone in the other to get the best reception

Last year while staying there, I could get phone reception(telstra) sitting at a table and chairs out front of the main office. Believe it comes from the near by mine.

as mentioned already, it's changed alot since your last visit by the sounds of it. the campground looked like a nice spot still, but all i recall of it was the lack of shade and grass and thinking geez how hot would it be camping where they all are. i can only remember bitumin and gravel in the designated camp area, nothing like what you recall the place used to be like sadly.

We were at Adels Grove 2 weeks ago and camped in The Grove for 3 nights  , we don't have solar so it wasn't an issue, but as mentioned before there is no designated sites so just find some where that suites you. You will not be disappointed, it is just paradise there. There are 2 lookouts there Lookout Hill a short walk from the campground or Harrys Hill a short drive. They have a tour to Harrys just before sunset and the guide tells you info of the area while you watch the sunset and sip wine and and eat nibblies supplied, well worth the price we thought.

Nat parks being nat parks, I suppose it was to be expected..

20 yrs ago, we went in winter, so heat wasn't a major problem, but there was plenty of shade.....but either way, the gorge is a magic spot.....even nat parks couldn't stuff the actual gorge up  ??

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think we will definetly be syating at Adels Grove now. Also its history has a common interest of ours(old fruit tree plantation and we are hobby botanists). As for the marked out lines and numbered sites, thats one thing we dont miss after leaving the East coast for Gods Country.

Same as said before I was there last wed Thursday and camping in the grove is not really suited to solar but they are very nice spots only 20 to 30 meters to water both roads in from Burke wills road house or cammoweal are very good but Burke wills seemed little less dirt even though I smashed rear window on canopy with a stone guard on trailer.
