My Grandfather was on HMAS Perth that sunk with the USS Houston in the battle of Sunda Straight and was a fortunate survivor though survived to spend 3.5 years as a POW on the Burma Siam Railway. Up til the day he pasted ( god rest his sole) he never ever said much if anything about his POW time. They where and still are true hero's that enabled us to enjoy the pleasures we do today. I tip my hat to them all and thoughts are with the current crop away at present.......
There is a memorial to Hec Waller , Captain of the Perth, and the Ship, here in Benalla, him being a local. Its near the Weary Dunlop memorial, and at first glance is very unobtrusive. It looks just like a great big table of stone.
When you look closer, it portrays the whirlpool and flotsam left by a sunken ship. Sitting close to the centre is a HMAS Perth Cap. Its one of the most moving memorials I have ever seen. Ill get a better pic for you if you want.
Hec Waller is one of two WW2 vets that various agencies are lobbying for a posthumous Victoria Cross. To my knowledge, no WW2 VC's were awarded to Navy Servicemen.
