Strzelecki track
« on: April 04, 2012, 08:46:46 PM »
Hi guys,

I'm taking the kids for a bit of an adventure in a couple of weeks from Adelaide to Innaminka via the strzelecki track with the CT. I'm going via the Flinders, staying at Arkaroola on the first night. Is it best to head back to Lyndhurst and start the track from the beginning or, looking at the map, I can head up from the Gammon ranges through Nth Mulga and Moolawatana and join the track up near Blanchewater?

Also I have read a few people have had no drama taking a CT on the bore track and the old strzelecki track, but those posts were from a while ago. Has anyone been up there recently.

We are going to try and do it  all in 6 days, which is a push. Will see how we go.

Cheers
Ray

I was up there for work a couple of weeks ago. There was heaps of rain and the tracks aren't the best. There has been alot of tracks and roads washed away with plenty of ruts and washouts. The road guys are working up there but they can only do so much.

You should be okay just be careful. All the roads were open.

As for driving up to Lyndhurst, you won't miss much if you don't go that way only the Leigh creek coalfield and talc alf.

Regards

Paul

It is a couple of years since I did that run but I would go the Moolawatana way, that PAR is a good run.
Just take it easy and watch out for washaways.
Check here for track info.

Depends on what you're towing, and what you're towing it with.  There are only two real options out of Arkaroola - to head back to Copley from Balcanoona, north on the main road to Lyndhurst to pick up the Strez, or to head east from Balcanoona on the Mt Hopeless road to join the Strez at Mt Hopeless.  The Mt Hopeless road is (or was last time I drove it) a very bulldusty road which I certainly wouldn't recommend if there had been a lot of rain, but it's a great drive in the dry.  And none of us like to backtrack unless there is no option.

If you're feeling REALLY adventurous you could try heading out from Arkaroola over the Echo Camp Back Track to pick up the Mt Hopeless road at Paralana - not sure I'd try that with a trailer myself!
Camping is great as long as the mattress is inner spring!

I just got back from doing the Strzelecki yesterday and there are still road closures in place as of last week when we were there. We got told by the Locals at Innamincka and Bill at Cameron Corner NOT to even try the Old Strzelecki  even in a Unimog!! enough said for me!!!

The track itself was fairly good, with some really washed out creek crossings but we did Leigh Creek to Innamincka in one day (7 hours but one day...needed to catch up some time, not brightest idea.....long story....)

If you're going to Innamincka here's the best hint: TAKE MOSQUITO REPELLANT and LOTS of it!!!! they are in Plaque proportions Bushman's with 40% DEET causes the average Mozzie to just laugh at you and say "try again sucker!!!!!"

otherwise - Enjoy

The Strzelecki trip via the Flinders and the Gammon Ranges is planned and leaving on Monday. Looking forward to it. Have found out the old Strzelecki track is closed due to water and the bore track is now closed permenantly, so had to make a few changes to the plan. First big trip away with the new camper, so hope it holds up ok.

I'm heading from Adelaide to stay at Brachina George for the first night. Then on to Arkarlooa for the second night. As it's not far between the two, it will give me a bit of time to have a look around. From there we are heading straight upto to Innaminka. Was originally planning to spend a night at Montecollina bore so I could take my time and do the bore track and the old Stezlecki but the bore track is closed permently now and due to rains, the old stzelecki is closed. So it's straight up the main road which will save a few hours. Will spend two days at Innaminka on the cooper creek. Then back to Rawsley Park in the Flinders for the last night before heading back to Adelaide.

Planning to do it in 5 nights. Bit rushed, but wanted to fit in as much as I could with the kids for the school holidays. Leaving today, so will let you know if the plan worked out. With a few pics...
