spent many weeks out there as a kid with parents camping and fossiking etc.

Good fun as a kid.. would like to get back there one day. Quick google search brings up lots of info out there.

edit: if you have kids this might be worth checking

There is two camp grounds in town is well worth a stay at, $5 a night, the first one just down from the pub is best, toilets and coin operated showers at it, the meals at the pub in town are excellent.

The Bridal track is closed at Monahans bluff, but you can still go down to the camp grounds on the track, it's well worth the drive.

Lots of history around the area, a drive out to Orphir is not bad (camping is available there)

Have a wander around the town, there are only 9 permanent residents in the town, hard to believe there used to be over 30,000 there in 1860.

Sharshebelle1,

Well worth a trip. Hill End itself is a magic little place but I love the camping area'a along the Bridle Track.  Getting to Hill End is all tar from Bathurst but the Bridle Track is a different matter. It's a pretty good 4WD trip in, take it easy as most corners are blind and it's sometimes hard to get past other vehicles.

If you plan on heading up there for the Easter W/End then get there early on Thursday morning as it will be chocka's. It was really busy last Easter. If you plan on staying in town call the Hill End NPWS office to check on bookings. We usually camp near Mary Flynn (off the Bridle Track) we follow the Mary Flynn camp area access track down to the water then back towards Hill End and cross the river, about a 10 min run in Low 2. We then head up onto the grass off the rocks of the river bed. It's a great spot and because you need to cross the river hardly anyone uses it.

The river is up atm so some of the crossings (if you choose to do a bit of 4WDing) will be pretty deep but not crazy deep. Walk them first. My personal fav is the crossing at Root Hog (just before Monaghans Bluff). It's not a straight run, it curves in a nice arc, watch the water for the eddy's and you'll see where the big rocks under the water are. Don't do it if you are by yourselves. Root Hog Fire Trail was open last time I was there, but sometimes the gates are locked, so be prepared to turn around if you drive it.

A great 4WD trip goes from Ophir (Orange), to Long Point Rd via Lookout Rd (there is another road too but I can't remember it's name). Then across the Macquarie at Long Point, before working it's way to 10 mins North of Hill End. Turn Right to Hill End. Left to Mudgee. The crossing is 50 to 100m but it's barely above hub height most of the time. Most of the 4WD Weekends near Sydney, or NSW 4WD trips have detailed route notes. On the road from Long Point to Hill End you'll see plenty of signs for things to look at, Cornish Roasting Pit's, Battery Stampers, Mine Shafts. Just follow the little detours. Very scenic trip, low range may be needed if pulling a camper up the steep incline after the crossing. I use low even when I'm not towing.

Sofala is close by, has another pub, a few more shops and used to have a camp ground. Not sure now though. It's worth a look at too if you have the time.

My last tip - take warm clothes, some firewood and a chainsaw (purely for track clearing) ;) if you have one. Even in the summer it can get really cold overnight! Oh and have a great time!

Cheers,

SD (Shane)

We enjoyed our trip to Hill End back in 2009 and visited the camp ground in town - well it is on the edge of town.  It was $10 a night back then but I am not sure if that was per person.  Anyway, it was a biggish and well spread out area and you would be sure to find a nice spot.

We camped closer to Sofala at a place called Greens Point.  My diary records:

S33 05 44   E149 43 55
14 and 15 March 2009
I absolutely loved the free camp here.  The camp spot was recommended to us by a mate and it was a lovely spot.  It is  6 kms East of Sofala (you have to drive through the township first) and located on the Upper Turon River.  As you arrive, there is a flat area on a rise and near the drop toilets.  You can choose to stay here, but more private and secluded spots are down along the river.  When we were there, the bush roses (rosa rugosa) had just finished flowering and the hips were a pretty sight.  We pulled the van into a largish clearing and positioned it so that we could just pull right out with ease.  It had been wet weather before our arrival and it continued to rain intermittently so we kept an eye on the river just in case it rose (but it didn’t come up discernibly).   We enjoyed sitting out under the awning and looking into the river.

The toilets were drop toilets and not as well maintained as they could be, but there were a few people camped there that time.

I take a group there once a year and we stay in the camp ground as it's within walking distance to the pub.  ;)
The other camp ground has had had a lot of work done on it in the last 18 months and is good for larger groups.
We usually travel in from Capertee through the Turon Gates and Sofala to Hill End and head home via Dixons Long Point, Ophir and Bathurst. As said the Bridal Trail is closed at Monaghan's Bluff.
Can't book the camp sites as they are managed by NPWS so it's first in best dressed.
History Hill is worth a look as is Golden Gully.
I usually arrange for our group to do a town tour with a historian and also arrange for some gold panning with an old prospector.

We go there a fair bit.
Very interesting place.

Well worth staying in the DECC (NPWS) site right in town. Well worth the coins.
Take a stroll to "Rose cottage" out the gate and turn left head up the hill.
Very nice spot for a cuppa and some home cooked scones in their gardens.

Also visit the shop where you'll meet the most interesting lady I've ever come across.
She can regale you with treasures and stories till the cows come home.
Buy something from her to keep her going, shes a great lady.
While you're there book in for the mine tour.
A few dollars, but well worth doing. You go in horizontally through the mine, then climb up the ladders to get out at the top of the hill.
Great fun in an old mine.

If you're active, a great walk back through the river walk to town. (Only a couple k's) Easy walking.

Don't forget a good camera as it is a photographers dream. The old buildings, church, pub and of course the old cottage make for some great shots.

You can also head just out of town for some gold panning if it takes your fancy.
The pub does a good meal and is very welcoming. Open fires in there garden this time of year are really good.

It is a great place to go, and there are heaps of ways to get in and each one makes for a great drive.
(Long weekend isn't the best time to go though. Just a suggestion, but I'd save such a beautiful place so it can be enjoyed without the hoards of once a year warriors!)
Whenever you go I hope you enjoy it.
