I've seen this several times before though generally it's just done with an axe with the log split into quarters though obviously chainsaw would be easier and you can leave the sections connected at the bottom. Quarters are set apart to form the gap in the middle which is stuffed with tinder to get it going. Some I've seen get tied top and bottom with fencing wire to ensure it stays together. Easily lasts long enough to cook a meal so no worries about it collapsing etc unless you're slow cooking something. Think I saw it credited as Swedish or Finnish in origin.
