New law in Vic - Long vehicle stickers?
« on: March 08, 2012, 11:09:49 AM »
Team
One of my club members came up last night at our General Meeting and mentioned 'friends' had been fined for not having a 'Warning Long Vehicle' or "Oversized Vehicle" type sticker on their caravan.  Apparently his mum needed one on her 14ft c'van... WTF?

Also there are regs on where it must be affixed - crap like must be no more than 1mtr from ground on left hand side...

Myself and DDR have been seaching for this and found SFA...

Anyone heard about this? or was he pulling my leg?

EDIT: I note that no new trailers come out with it, or none I've seen lately

Hi team, been checking vicroads site can't find an answer to your original question, but it appears that if your rig ie; car and camper is over 7.5 metres long you MAY display "do not overtake turning vehicle " sign need to check on regulated size and position. If you have this displayed it allows you to straddle lanes to make turns, but I wouldn't argue with that b-double coming past just the same

For Victoria -

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/5CA364B6-0653-460E-8049-C07F253EA57F/0/VSI11.pdf

Note the "turning concession" at the bottom.

Basically - vehicles (or combinations) exceeding 7.5m in overall length MAY have "do not overtake turning vehicle" signage.

LONG VEHICLE signage is only for combinations that have an overall length of  22m or more. The only vehicles that can exceed 19m and need this signage at 22m are B doubles and some vehicles operating under VicRoads oversize/overmass permits, generally some car carriers  and some PBS vehicles.

(LONG VEHICLE signage not to be confused with OVERSIZE signage which is utilized on Class 1 vehicles (ie overwidth/overlength/overmass, low loaders, cranes etc)

(and xcvator just beat me ;D, just have to know the magic search words for the VicRoads site, lots of stuff there, just hard to find sometimes ???)

Just buy them from truck supply shops. The ones they sell will be legal ( I would suggest the tape type, not the rectangular metal plates)

Its actually the law to have "do not overtake turning vehicle" signs on heavy vehicles over 7.5 meters long, articulated or rigid, this is a warning to car drivers NOT to overtake when a truck is turning  (which is illegal) as far as caravans go, the combination would exceed that length on most set ups however they don't need anywhere as much road when cornering, much less likely to 2 lanes when cornering

As far as "long vehicle" signs go, 1 trailer semi's can operate up to 19 meters, no signs required, sometimes you see what truckies refer to as pocket B doubles, they have 2 short bogie axled trailers (often fuel tankers) also come in just under 19 meters, again no signs required.
Anything over 19 meters, such as earthmoving floats, extending trailers, single trailers towing a roadtrain dolly, full sized B doubles, must carry long vehicle signs.

Oversize signs are for stuff that is WIDER than 2.5 meters regardless of length and have to have flashing amber lights and some cases permits.

I personally  think that if any outfit  is over 19 meters long (that's a bloody big caravan), then it should carry long vehicle signs,

In Vic it is 22m for the "Long Vehicle" signage, not that it really matters on this forum, I don't think any of our outfits are ever going to get close to needing them ;D

Due to our ageing population, state legislation may require some of  our grey nomads to display a sticker saying  "WARNING: Old Farts Vehicle"

cheers
