Goldstream. Cleaning, polishing alloy checker plate.

Gday,

I am going to spend a few days detailing my new (2nd hand) Goldstream Storm.

Is there a simple method of polishing Alloy Checker Plate with its uneven surface ?

I have all the usual truck load of various polishing compounds, Godards Glow, Autosol ect.

Any helpfull advice on this,  or new Storm ownership would be appreciated.

Autosol does a great job but polish will do a good job

As long as you know how to get it dirt again

Pure "sunlight soap", a bucket of water & some 000 or 0000 steel wool (depends on how rough the surface of the aluminium is). Throw the soap into the bucket of water to let it get softer, then rub the steel wool into it. When rubbing it into the surface it will not scratch due the the animal fats in the soap and these fats will leave a non greasy protective film on the surface that will last for a few months. When you wash the trailer after a trip away, the water beads up like a freshly polished painted surface.
I used to polish restored motorcycle alloy and the more you use it the shinier it gets. Do it enough times and it starts looking like chrome. I hope this helped. It must be "pure" Sunlight soap, you can buy it from Coles or Woolies, five cakes in a cardboard box, just like it was sold decades ago.

Thanks for the replies.

After doing a bit more scratching around I found a product called Purple Metal Polish by California Custom, I sourced it through my local Toyota dealer.

This stuff is fantastic,  just a LIGHT RUB with this stuff and it comes up a treat, it really is the gun polish.

I'll try to put up some photos soon.

Try 'Alubright'  It's an acid based cleaner that you need to dilute.  Get some thick rubber gloves and wear some protective glasses.  Wipe on with an old sponge, wait a few minutes and then hose off. Don't reuse the sponge on your car afterwards.  Don't use it 'neat' and have the hose ready and wash off liberally with fresh water.  Test your mix on a non conspicuous section.  Also works well OK on galvanised sections.

Our Pioneer has checkerplate on all front facing panels and it does a great job of getting off Pilbara red mud.

Also great for those with Ali bull bars.
