We don't really like Longreach, very overrated, but we love Winton and all the dinosaur experiences around it.

A couple of trips ago, and for no particular reason, we stayed at the Ilfracombe Caravan Park instead of Longreach. What a gem of a place. We still did all the good things in Longreach as mentioned above (the River Cruise is great) but the happy hour each evening at Ilfracombe included some great bush poetry and entertainment by the hosts. On our last visit, we were entertained by a Patsy Cline impersonator. Some great memories if you like that type of entertainment to go with everything else the area has to offer.

X2 this, the Thomson River cruise was quite good, the river was in flood when we did it, made it a bit more interesting.

We found the Stockmans Hall of Fame rather disappointing - lots of mini-biographies of various people associated with cattle and very little else.  However the Powerhouse Museum was worth visiting in 1997, but it was closed when we went through in 2010 and not sure if it has reopened.

X3 we also did a horse and cart tour around longreach, I think it was Cobb & Co was really good, we enjoyed it. Stockmans hall of fame is awesome, could have spent a whole day there easy, that's if your into that sort of stuff and history, however I was a little dissapointed in the Qantas museum.

Depends on what interests you regarding the Hall of Fame- took us half a day, but others have spend a whole one.  Qantas is interesting- well worth paying the bit extra and doing the plane tours, especially if you have kids.  We spent almost a whole day there.

I was the opposite. I work on planes so was a bit disappointed and found the Qantas museum a propaganda exercise. The Hall of fame I thought was good if you took the time to read all the biographies, they really did it tough back then. Kids were bored though, but I was driving so they were stuck there .

The chinese restaurant in the main street of town appears a bit run down, but the food was the best chinese I've had in years.  I found Longreach a bit over rated too.

Hey gurules when are you heading off?  I am leaving from Melbourne with the family in the last week of June and will be heading up the Kidman way and over to Fraser and was interested in asking the same question.   I am looking to see if I can order a wheel cover so that some other swaggers can spot us on our travels.

I agree with GU Thommo.  Longreach was a little over-rated to me too, but Winton was good.  I didn't stay in the parks at Longreach; instead, I drove to Ilfracombe and stayed there and drove back to the Hall of Fame and the Qantas Museum.  Great people at the park at Ilfracombe.

BEWARE of Longreach Tourist Park, Thrush Road, Longreach, QLD

We were there December 2011, the toilets were alive with BUGS, thousands & thousands, discusting, I spoke to the office, they did nothing. there was a VERY VERY LOUD & noisy pool pump.

I WOULD STRONGLY Suggest going elsewhere.

We stopped at the Longreach Tourist Park in July 2011- 2 cars & tents, 6 people, & they suggested we get an ensuite site as it would be cheaper (which it was!).  Was clean and bug free, just a gravel site, but no issues erecting 2 tents.  My brother on the other hand told them where to stick their cabins- not up to standard apparently.
