What are the Nissan 2.8 turbo diesels like compared to a 4.2 natural aspirated in a 95 GQ

The 2.8Tdi is a good engine though is gutless of the mark towing and any incline does require riding the shyt out of the clutch. Once up and running they are fine but lack low down torque. The 4.2 NA is a great engine, reliable, good low down torque and good tow engine but like the Cruiser 1HZ, it does need a turbo.

PS: my previous Patrol was. 2.8Tdi and my current Patrol is a 4.2Tdi and the 4.2Tdi wins hands down.Barely comparable. My 2.8Tdi was chipped and had 3in exhaust but was still lacking IMO for towing.
2006 GU4 4.2TDi Patrol with many goodies. Currently no camper but have had a Customline Camper, Kimberly Kamper and Jayco Hawk....Tenting and Swagging it now..

As far as power and any semblence of speed went I was never happy with my 2.8.
Having said that it was bullet proof!!
No matter how hard I tried to kill it all it would do was keep running.
Very reliable.
When I traded it in for my new Navara it had over 470,000 k's on it and never had a major issue.

Really depends on what your after and budget.
If towing a small camper (re light) with no need to be first up every mountain range and budget tight then a RD28ETi would be fine.
There pretty cheap these days and make sure service history is upto scratch.
Although a N/A TD42 is ridiculously slow on open road and painful to drive.
All depends on your needs.

Love my 2.8, chipped with 3" exhaust she fly's runs cooler and uses less diesel :D

From this I think you are referring to the 2.8 turbo GQ Nissan wagon. Unlike the later GU wagons the earlier GQ did not have the teckamoligy that the GU's do have. The GQ's were a little slow of the mark but did travel well at highway speed, that is until you came to a hill. One problem that is/was common - don't let them over heat. Big no no, head cant handle the high temps from overheating. Other than that they were bullet proof.

x2 Replaced the head on mine due to previous owner overheating it, saying that she had done 250 thou at the time now she is on 350 and as strong as an OX and as fast as an elephant. And she smokes like Cheech and Chong lol.

I get about 12.5-14 L/100k towing my trackie which is no lightweight and it gets along ok. I get around 11/100 without towing. As all the others have said just watch the temp.
Supposedly they have the same number of horses as the 4.2 but they are ponys compared to drafthorses. The 4.2 has heaps more torque. The drive train is a lot lighter as well with the 260Z/280Z gearbox in it. It works OK though as long as you aren't pulling the Titanic up the boatramp.

Have to agree with noel's points. I've also just replaced the head with a new one, and I LOVE it's economy. Before I bought the Patrol, I towed the CT with a Commodore V6, the fuel consumption between the two is identical, however if I cruise on 90 instead of a 100 it's even better then the Commodore.
I've had LPG fumigation instaled and together with a 2 3/4 inch straight thru exhaust, my little 2.8 will blow away any 4.2 anywhere, anyday, same goes for Yotas. LOL and that lil donk just loves to rev. Smoke can be reduced by allowing the engine to build it's reves gradualy without stomping on the peddle, helps economy too.
Since the head replacement, have no trouble going up the ranges to Dwellingup or the Kalaminda range towing the CT, if I wannna go faster, just turn on the lpg and away we go.
BUT, watch that tenp guage, when she boils......it's way to late, gonna cost you bigtime. Oh, DO NOT USE GREEN RADIATOR INHIBITOR only organic based, or Nissan genuine, anything else will cause corrosion of your head gasket and cost you big time.
