Proper way to stack and dry fire wood

HI all just wondering the best way to stack and dry firewood I have split it already someone was saying log cabin stacking is the way to go any thoughts.BTW the blocks are still sappy.Tinkera.

Stack it any way you can..... just make sure you tie it together with 6b&s.........................

Try and stack it facing north for the most sun.. If not just bring it to my place I can find a spot for you!

I use to stack the wood neatly like a make-shift fence then a guy I work with said just chuck it in a heap for air-flow...I reckon the fence method allows more air flow. Another argument is do you have the bark facing up or the freshly split middle facing up. 2 different arguments to that is bark up is good to allow rain to just roll off and not sink into the wood you're trying to dry and yet the other was with the fresh stuff facing up the sun and air can get to it for quicker drying

i always stacked it in an open fronted shed,, 12 months later, firewood..
But a guy at the timber yard said just pile it up, let the air get round it and leave it in the open for 12 months, he recons it works better.?.. can't see it myself, but thats how its getting seasoned this year,,, i'll tell you come winter how good it works...

If you want maximum air penetration, and therefore drying, stack it like this:

You need a lot more space tho.

I find the best way is to get someone else to do it.

Seriously, why would you have bark on firewood? It should be knocked off when the tree is first dropped.
If you can, don't stack the wood on bare earth, moisture, termites etc, and cover it, left in the weather it seems to hold onto any moisture.

I did bark up and down depending on what best fitted the gaps and made it stable. When I was a kid and was dragged out into the NZ forested the wood wold be wet for a year no matter what so it would always take two years to be ready. Mind you with al those Earthquakes now it would likely shake the damp out.

Hi,
  I stack mine pretty tight between the roof poles, but keep the bottom bits on edge to avoid soaking up any water on the ground.

I hope to get a roof on for next winter, but rain doesn't penetrate more than a few rows.

Thanks for the tips i,m going for your set up mace end grain out at the btm two rows on top of that running the full lenght of btm row so on and so on should get plenty of air around it should be dry enough for camping in the next years winter.Tinkera.

LOL how to stack firewood? There's only one way around here and that's off the ground or not at all to keep termites away. Any dry wood that touches the ground around here is full of termites in no time. I'm lucky, i can go for a walk down the back and cut it with the chainsaw as i need it and don't need to keep much up around the house. Welcome to QLD

Yeah Jeeps I hear ya I haul mine back from my block on the Fraser coast leave it there and it would be mulch in no time.Even in Brizzy i,ve got steel channel under the base of the stack near the shed ,make it as hard as possible I say.Tinkera.

Yes I am the same jeeps, if I leave wood to dry touching the ground, by the time it is dry the termites have found it.
