« on: January 15, 2012, 05:21:37 PM »
hi i am wondering  the people who pump water straight out of a  river  . do you use a filter before your pump . as where we go camping the water has a bit of floaty stuff in it . its out of a water tank  of a roof under trees .

Pump from a gerry can, water may of come from home, a tap at the park or the river. I just have a strainer in the line which only takes care of things that are going to damage the pump.

I dont like to put water back in the creek with soap and the likes, it would need to be a long hose and a good pump to pull it the distance we normally camp away from it.

i am pumping from drums but after  about  5 showers we have  to pull the hose of the heater and  clean the strainer. what iam looking for is something that i could put at the end of my hose so i do not have to pull  my heater a part  so often

The other place to have a look is in the big green shed with the hammer out the front in the irrigation section

I used to use two bits of wood with some small holes and some tie wire .
And I would put the end of the hose between them ( about a foot ) and tie it in so that I could throw it out in the deeper water and it floated with about a foot of hose hanging down in the water so to get the cleanest part .
Also tied a bit of stocking over the end to keep the first lot of bugs out .

Some time ago we paid $$'s [can't remember how much but it was a approx. $100] for a "you beaut" dual cartridge water filter - supposed to filter out all the "nasties".

Result, muddy river water still looked the same! So since then, when I run out of town water, I have drawn the water from the creek/dam etc, let it rest overnight, then syphoned off the clean water the next morning.

I had one of these are they are totally useless. I only ever used my "inlet" in High country rivers that are pretty clean but these filters are too coarse and let large particles through even for those rivers. My sureflow pump kept stopping because it's diaphram got particles in it. I had to strip it down and buy new pump diaphrams 3 times in one year.

I went to a disc filter like http://www.wetearth.com.au/irrigation-filters and have never had a problem since.

Which one did you get? They seem to jump in price quickly.
