Liberty camper questions/ ideas
« on: December 06, 2011, 03:16:14 PM »
Hey all, im looking to build buy/ upgrade a liberty camper. I found a website camp trailer wholesales which I believe is the same person as liberty campers. Now I'm looking at a hard floor and I've reads one reports of the older ones that dnt seem to crash hot but not much on the newer ones. I've spoken to a guy called John and I've asked for a price on everything accept the susp, wheels axels draw bar.... This is on there bigger model. My idea was get the completed box and bolt it to my own chassis with independent susp. I can get the lot minus what I said above for 7k. Does this sound reasonable for what I'm getting and Wat is peoples thoughts on it ??

Hi Gu-ish

So basically what your after is the hard floor style tub with flip over floor, that you can build your own chassis under.  Have you got a link that shows what your looking at buying?

Does the 7k include canvas?  Is the canvas ripstop or Aust Dynaproof?   Kitchen?  Electrics? toolbox storage? Is the tub painted / powdercoated?

http://www.campertrailerwholesales.com/Products.html  that is the website. It's the bigger size one includes the bigger front box, if u look on liberty campers it's the "statesman" model.

Looks like a similar tub and set up  from say a pinnacle or ezytrail hardfloor (and others).

See:

http://www.pinnaclecampers.com.au/product/555/OFF_ROAD_HARD_FLOOR_CAMPER_TRAILER

Where you can get the whole thing set up for $10k (but not with your independant suspension).

The way I see it, if you reckon you can finish it off for less than $3k youre in front.

Doesnt look to bad. I can see why you want to do your own drawbaw  :-[ Cheap nasty bolt on drawbars are a little scary ;D

Looks like he has a few there offer him 5k  ;D

I would check out the 2nd hand market. some good buys atm such as this Aussie Swag.

Well yeh that's Wat I was thinking will come out cheaper and better off with teqnicly a stronger trailer. Looked at building one from scratch and the tent is going to be roughly quoted 4-6k which I dnt see the point. Yeh looks the same as easy trail I went and had a look at them
Cuz they are not far from me and I think the tent material was ok, was better than my roof top tent and that didn't leak lol. Ppl have complained about the quality but so would I if I was paying 15k but for 7k can hardy build one by the time u get draws and boxes etc....

We looked pretty seriously at buying a Stateman Liberty, but we were pretty concerned with the size & thickness of the steel in the chassis.
We didn't have the option of puting the tub onto a new suspension, etc but it sounds like a terrific idea.  Our idea was to use the box on the front and have a kitchen and pantry draw built to suit and we looked at the option of putting another box onto the drawbar to house our fridge.  In the end we just couldn't make it work for us as we really wanted a tough off road trailer that with luck will last us many years to come.

I think you'll end up with a half decent trailer if you can put a new bottom onto the tub.  Should be a good unit.

Good luck...keep us all in the loop

Wat did u think of the quality of the tent and features etc? Basically I would be making a heavy duty flat trailer with wheels and sis and bolting that box to it, mayb even swig off wheel carrier.... I would build the whole thing myself but the cost of the tent plays an issue and also all the title things water tank and pump and draw slides....

Hi Gu-ish

Another reason we ended up swinging away from the Liberty was because we found a photo that showed that when the trailer was open they had ropes pulling the end out whereas all other hard floor campers don't appear to have to have these ropes.  While we were a bit concerned with the canvas mainly because it was chinese, our thoughts were that in reality we were looking to get a hard floor camper at a budget price.  I don't know where you are located but Liberty have agents in Vic and now also on the Gold Coast.  If your close enough you should go and have a look before buying just to make sure you know what your getting.

Good luck.
Cheers Loshde

I have looked at the ezytrail ones I assume they are the same I didn't mind the quality. I've been quoted 4k and up to get one made then u have to add aditional costs ontop to build the rest of the trailer and I would do aluminium so there's at least 150 a sheet for that
