Far West Coast of South Aust.

Howdy all

We are heading over to the west coast between Coffin Bay and Streaky Bay for a couple of weeks.  Does anyone know of some good off the track beach camping spots?  We are self sufficient with water etc in the CT and dont really want to do the caravan park thing. 

Some possible spots to stay would be of assistance.

Get yourself CAMPS 5 or 6. In there is a list of FREE Camps or cheap campsites all over Australia. I looked mine up and there are about 20 camping sites for the area your are looking at.

We came back from there 2 weeks ago, Camps 6 was OK .................let us down once or twice.

Lincoln National park amust, we liked Taylors Landing the best, but Surfleet Cove was good too.

Perlubie beach is great, about 17km from Streaky bay,free and flushing toilets and cold showers, have to camp on the beach, not in car park, so need W4 wheel drive, and find out tide heights too. Its hard to find as road in has changed since Camp 6....maybe go and ask at Tourist info. and get current directions would make it easier, we spent hours finding it ...........was worth it !!!!

 Loved Coffin Bay national park, best spot was ...........think it was called Black Spring Camp area. Sandy tracks in, 45 minutes from Coffin Bay itself, pitt toilet but well worth it. Can have tidal water across track and times, we had no problems, let tyres down and were sensible.

Coorong National Park.....Mark point ....no toilet there but a great spot.


Port Gibbon was ok , you could camp at the toilet with the others or drive out along the beach and camp in anywhere which we did. The main issue in October was the wind .........might be a bit less now.

We have also camped in Lincoln National Park.  September Beach was FANTASTIC.  Well separated camp spots, beautiful beach, drop-dunnies that were cleaned daily.  There are other camping places in this park like Memory Cove, but you need to pre-arrange access through the Port Lincoln Visitor Centre.

Make sure you do the Whalers Way drive from Fishery Bay around the cape (you have to register with the visitor centre first and get the gate key.

On the road back from Fishery Bay to Lincoln, there is a private property that allows bush camping. I can't recall the name of it but if you called the Visitor Centre, they would tell you.

We loved Coffin Bay National Park too, although we did not camp there due to having the dog with us. We did day trips and explored many of the spots. Black Springs looked the best spot to camp.  Yangie Bay had caravans and 2wd's in it.  Not sure if you can camp in Avoid Bay, but it has spectacular views. Further up the coast there is a great camp spot at Greenly Beach in front of Mt Greenly. It's quite exposed but the views are incredible.  Good surf and beach fishing.  There are many tracks in and around the coast and dunes with obvious spots to camp that are protected from the wind.

Further north again, we drove around Sheringa - there are camp spots there facing most directions. Some drop-dunnies in the dunes behind the first bay you come across but no signs of water.  If you follow the track north from this bay there are lots of areas that are obviously popular for camping.  Again, great beach fishing and what looked like a sandy spot for launching a boat. The roadhouse is the main point for local information and it is also where you pay your camping fees.

Smoky Bay has been very windy every time we have visited here.

I have fished a gunyah many years ago, and would love to go back.  From your blog Stozz, some great fishing, but we have the dog and i thought this is still part of the national park, is this the case?

Im starting to get a little excited, 6 weeks and we are off.

mikera station is the one your thinking of stoz, well worth stoping in just keep an eye out for drop bears

sheringa beach is a top spot, about $5 /night pay at the store on the highway before you go in, when we went we had the whole place to our selves, it is just south east of elliston

I have fished a gunyah many years ago, and would love to go back.  From your blog Stozz, some great fishing, but we have the dog and i thought this is still part of the national park, is this the case?

You cant camp in any National Parks with a dog.  We left ours behind with the camper and did day trips into the park to go fishing etc.  But you have to have a dog that is happy to sleep the day away in your camper and not be a pest to others who are camped nearby.

On the north side of Coffin Bay are Farm Beach and Dutton Bay. There are some very basic campgrounds there and you can have a dog.  Just be really careful of 1080 baits in the area.

There is an interesting camping/place to stay at Sceale Bay just South/East of Streaky Bay. The camping area is basic (nothing wrong with it and fairly cheap) but if you talk to the owner, he will probably give you the OK to go onto his property just up the hill.
