Fire Safety
« on: October 07, 2011, 07:37:15 AM »
I attended a boating fire safety session with some mates last night at http://bmys.com.au/, I even got to put a fire out  ;D

Lessons learnt:
A 1kg fire extinguisher is pretty useless in novice hands
It is better to have one big fire extinguisher than two small ones
A fire blanket is good to smother a small fire before it becomes a big fire
You should ensure you shake your fire extinguisher often to prevent the powder settling
Even a small fire is hot!

I owe, I owe, it’s off to work I go…

Hi D4D
Yes, I agree, and preferably both in the car and camper.
Cheers

My only advice is to teach your partner how to use an extinguisher or fire blanket. Just because you have one available, doesn't mean anything without training!

Shooting an extinguisher at a stove is deadly, most time the range hood will shoot the flame back at you.

Good info.

I have a fire blanket and a 2kg extinguisher permanently in the Patrol. I've seen a 1kg extinguisher used in an actual engine bay fire and it struggled, we eventually had to use blankets and shovel-loads of dirt to put it out.

13yrs in the rural fire service, we had some fun with community training with the different sizes...

Would like to be able to take a 4.5kg or 9kg extinguisher really, but reality space is an issue...

1kg are a waste of time really, specially if they arent as said rolled around once every few weeks to stop the powder compressing..

Another good one to remember...

1 litre of water becomes 1700 liters of steam!

Does anyone know a cheap place to buy 2kg extinguishers? I can find 1kg ones easilty enough - SuperCrapAuto etc but the 2kg ones are a bit steep.

Only thing I remember from my last fire training course (sometime in the 80's) is with a liquid fire aim at the edges and come in dont spray directly in the middle as you can spread the fire in all directions.... well I think I remember that correctly

I think I got mine at an Autobarn, can't remember the price but it was cheaper than I expected (which would have been why I grabbed it). $60 I think...

That big green shed with lowest prices has a few extinguishers, not sure about the 2kg bit though

1KG units can be bought <$20 when on special but it seems 2kg units are around $60. Doesn't seem right does it?

It's likely that because everyone assumes a 1kg will be enough, they are produced in sufficient quantities to keep material costs down... 2kg doesn't enjoy that advantage.
