Car security system - which one?
« on: October 01, 2011, 04:53:07 PM »
I don't want people posting what type of security system they have, for obvious reasons ???  I would like to know what people recommend to stop a thief from not only stealing the car but also breaking in (or at least deter them!!).  There are upgrade units that plug into the existing car electrics and can be operated by the remote fob. BUT given that many thieves these days are stealing (or copying) the keys first, I was considering a unit that not only operates via the remote fob but also requires a pin to be entered via a pad inside the car.  My only concern is, if such a system fails when you are in a remote area or even just in town, how and who would be able to get the thing going again ???  Would like to hear from any gurus or even from experience.  You may also suggest alternatives if you like.

Cheers Andy

I'd go a completely seperate system rather than integrated. Reason is Prados are being stolen via the thieves plugging in their own master ECUs and driving away.

Yep, tend to agree Frank. A robust owner with a pick handle & teach these poor " unfortunates" that stealing isn't a good idea round these parts. The law seems to protect rather than prosecute these days. Maybe the offenders might understand a bit of "rough justice"

now now boys, down south, we must stick to conventional means, or at very least piratical ;D I can't take a dog everywhere now can I ???

There is a lot of theft going on around some parts of Sydney at the moment and we need to do something to protect our investments.  You can't keep claiming on insurance, $600 excess and increased premiums every year!!

I drive an old 2.8td GQ. Who in their right mind would want to steal it in the first place! If it wasn't illegal to do so I would leave the keys in it.

My apologies Andy, the pick handle is back under the bed (still real handy though >:D). Must be a spin off of a rural upbringing. Very simple rules .Rule #1-f it's not yours, DON'T TOUCH THE F#$@ING THING!! Not hard to understand that one. Rule #2- EXPECT A FLOGGING IF CAUGHT. Once again, easy to understand. Maybe that's the problem, todays scum are untouchable in todays law. As such , I redirect your eyes to my original post  . Oh, we've had nothing pinched from my place yet, must be lucky eh !!

Got me started now Bevan........ >:D

Justice my arse....

I'm back Andy, had to go get a tissue  ;D. poor little blighters probably came from broken homes, underprivileged  blah blah blah blah. The sooner the scum in the world get the message that people won't tolerate the crap that goes on ,the better. The cost of electricity has got too high to fry 'em ,so we'll have to hang 'em high. That might make a few think twice about getting up to no good  >:( End of rant.

I blame medicine. In years gone by the gene pool was cleansed because only the strong survived. Today medicine keeps the weak genes alive when they should have died out...

my god, where is this topic heading ???

Trying to get back on topic.....I like the idea of a separate security system, even though it means a little more effort (2 fobs or switch/pad), that way if they get the keys, they still can't drive it away.  I am still concerned about system failure and leaving me stranded. I will ask these questions when I do some research.

Why is it that so many of us want corporal punishment, yet only the minority voices ever get heard ??? It's a rhetorical question, so please don't answer it. hahahaha

Agreed, given the way Prado’s are being stolen it needs to be separate. System failure or being immobilised in the bush is a concern, maybe a simple kill switch...

Beat me to it D4D. What would be wrong with a more simpler approach??. A hidden kill switch or 2 disabling the car, easy to bypass if ever the switch failed in the bush. Might be a case of a crook over thinking ( for once  ;D), looking for the hi tech system that's not there.

Hi,
I saw one advertised for old land rovers - very simple and effective. It was a key operated tap in the brake line.
Push on the brakes, turn the tap, remove the key.
Not many tea-leaves would be carrying hydraulic spares.
cheers

Nice ideas there ;D  Hmm, this could be a good solution to it being driven away, but I also want something to deter the poor underprivileged from breaking in and doing damage.
