Just been through this ourselves......Got a Landcruiser as the touring car so 4x4 capabilities wasn't high up the list, we where looking for some ground clearance, rear seat legroom and storage. Came down to RAV4 Vs. Suzuki.
Outlander and CX-7 where ruled out just on real life fuel figures, got a few Outlanders at work.

Suzuki gave more bang for your buck with the trekker pack thrown in and HI/Lo range but found it sluggish in the 4cyl, the Rav4 was a nicer car to drive and loads of storage makes it easier to live with day to day.......Toyota dealers everywhere......interestingly their is more leg room in the rear of the new Rav4 than our 100 series.

cheers

Although I stand by my first suggestion of the suzukii I'll throw one more idea into the ring....

what about the short wheel base Pajero? Not sure if she needs a 4 door but they are a true 4wd and IMHO very reliable vehicles.

Looks like you got a good buy. I looked at a number of smaller 4wd's and got down to the Vitara and an x trial. I went with the xtrail because it fitted us better and SWMBO wanted one  ;D
