Disposing of old fuel
« on: June 10, 2011, 09:42:31 AM »
Hi guys, I have about 5l of stale fuel in a jerry can that I need to get rid of. Where's the best place to dispose of old fuel? Tipping the plants wont like it if I just pour it on the garden  ;D.

Cheers, Sam.

X2

For that matter, I shudder to think where the thousands of gallons of paint thinner, turps, metho' etc used by painters and tradies ends up. There's no chemical dump in my town, just pristine rivers and lakes......

Cheers,

Cam

Waxy leaf stuff is hard to kill as weed killer won't sink in. Guy at work knows the trick, I'll ask him.

I mix some new fuel with the old and out it through the Mower. Up until now it hasn’t broken down on me.

Put some dishwashing liquid in the mix ... it gets through the waxy coating ... just like it gets through grease on your dishes.

Get ahold of a Transpacific company in your area ... they can guide you to who can do this depending on where you live of course.  They love recycling ... it's what they do best.

Good idea but our mower is a 4 stroke and the fuel I have is 50:1, 2 stroke.

Donate it to your local RFS/CFA to mix as drip torch fuel.

Put some dishwashing liquid in the mix ... it gets through the waxy coating ... just like it gets through grease on your dishes.
This. The detergent makes it "sticky" too. Good to use with RoundUp, etc, if you need it to stick to persistant weeds.

I use old fuel along the edges of the garden, kills the grass nicely and stops it from getting all through the gardens. If it's not too old though, I do this:
I mix some new fuel with the old and out it through the Mower. Up until now it hasn’t broken down on me.

How "old" are we talking here? Or do you just have no further use for the 2Stroke? If you've still got 2-stroke equipment, just tip the old stuff in when you mix up a new batch.

Thanks!
Matto :)

Hi,
I have run 2 stroke fuel through a 4 stroke mower on odd occasions.
Doesn't seem to cause any grief, and that is at 25:1.
cheers

tip half in your tank next time you go to fill up. 2.5L of 50:1 2 stroke won't even be noticed stale or not, especially in a 150L capacity tank.

You can also use any vegetable oil in the mix. There are also numerous wetting agents on the market if you want to break the bank, were I work we sell up to 10 different types!
