Traveling with fruit and veg.

We are planning a trip to Central Australia in July. We will be traveling from Gippsland in Victoria through SA and on to NT.
My question is this. What restrictions is there for carrying fresh food like fruit and vegies (potatoes, carrots, pumpkin) interstate?
I have a feeling that fruit may be restricted because of fruit fly and I can deal with that (Life is too short for fruit anyway) but the humble potato is a different story.

The exclusions include spuds and all fruit etc like Tomatoes etc. We fueled up the fridge in the NT and then had to sit there and eat all out Mandarins in the car park   and they were quite thorough, not nasty but specific asking us to open the camper etc, no worries though it's not like it takes to long. Canned food is OK as is a stew in the fridge etc. Some of the places we went were not manned and there was an honesty system in place and that's up to you.

One really big point I would like to make is a lot of people thinks it's OK to throw an apple core etc out the window while on the road. I think this is wrong as quite often those seeds germinate and introduce an apple try etc into a place that should not have them. We saw this a bit such as a Tomato plant growing up the Dampier

My In-Laws came to visit us from QLD to WA in Dec last year and forgot about the veg/fruit exclusion borders and had to throw heaps out. They were later told by a couple in a caravan park in Adelaide, they had a Dreampot, so they put all the veg left in there and started cooking it all up rather than throw it out and the border guys were ok with that (whatever was not cooked up - still had to be thrown out). The In-laws were also travelling with a Dreampot (which we now own ).

The links I've given you are for SA and NT, but you can select a state in the top left hand side. You have to go through the Vic/NSW/SA fruit fly zone and they are very thorough at the check point at Renmark.

Right at the bottom of the page there's some info about another restricted zone within the state.

Looking at the SA page you can't take potatoes in from any other state.

The PCI permit they refer to would be for commercial transport, not tourists.

I usually avoid carrying anything fresh and carry some instant potato, or tins of tiny taters, tinned and dried vegetables when we're going interstate rather than worrying about fresh stuff and quarantine laws.
