Not a good start to your holiday...
« on: March 25, 2011, 05:53:19 PM »
Hi swaggers
Just thought I would regale you of our attempted holiday this last monday at.........KIAMA! Of course if you don't watch the news  you probably wouldn't have known that the area had just had the biggest flood in recorded history. It just happened to coincide with the day of our travel from the Newcastle area. I did all the homework on the RTA website to make sure that the highway was open and right to go.  It wasn't until we reached to Mt Ousley that we saw a Message board saying that the highway was blocked at Albion Park Rail and they suggested "delay your trip". Thanks guys. Much appreciated. We thought that we would try and head around the east side of Lake Illawarra after a maccas stop to placate the young fella who was going stir crazy. Well that didn't go too well either as the traffic came to a grinding halt with water knee deep + across the road. Bugger!! It is moments like this you wish you had a 4WD (we have a large family car). I watched as some 4WD negotiated the water and as people walked through it too. Negligible flow and the fourbies were having no problems although the women driving their urban assault vehicles that had never seen dirt in their life (read 4WD) were too scared to go through it until I explained how to do it to them (may have a 2WD but I do have some experience in a 4WD). I saw a WRX go through driving on the median strip. He made it but only just and he was getting a bit squirrelly on the really wet grass. He was lowered too. I was just about to cover my grill and drive through as I was confident that I was altogether do able when another sedan started to drive through. It made it with no problems so I forgot about the grill cover and went across no problems.... to be continued

We came back from Sydney on the Sunday afternoon.
Rain started belting down from just before the Bulli Pass turn-off, with next to no visability coming down Ousley, didn't ease off till we hit Nowra.
Water was running cross the road through the Kiama by-pass & the bends. Said to the minister at the time, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a bit of a mud slide on the bends.

Hope the rest of the days were good for you.
Bob and Robyn

continued... well we managed to get through the chicane of vehicles that had been abandoned in the flood water and continued on our way towards the highway. Not many vehicles could be seen coming from Kiama way and the sight of a semi trailer bogged up to its axles on the grass median strip adjacent to the briffen wire fence, did not bode well for us. Regardless we pushed on to Kiama. Upon arriving in Kiama we decided to to call our digs for the night , Easts Beach Caravan Park, to see how they were faring. Engaged. OK no problems they are probably on the phone to another person...maybe. When we finally got onto them I enquired how we were placed for a site for the night. There was quite a pregnant pause as they contemplated how to answer. Finally the apologetic lady stated that they had experienced a flash flood through the park and had to evacuate all occupants. She went on to say that we could take a risk with a site but that was up to us. She couldn't even offer us a cabin as the park had experienced some damaged. She didn't volunteer and I didn't ask. To compound the issues there was a rock slide blocking the highway on Kiama bends for all north bound traffic and a bit further down the road at Gerringong the highway was shut in both directions. Happy days!! Even the rail line hadn't faired well with track south of Kiama being damaged and trains not getting through in any direction. Time to act. With rain continuing to fall and helicopters buzzing around with monotonous regularity, we decided to try for a hotel room in Kiama and sit this one out for the night. Not much fun setting up a camper in driving rain blowing a gale.
As I had the laptop and modem on board, I jumped on line and browsed Last Minute and Wotif for a room for the night. We settled on one close by that we could still get to (there were others that were flooded in!!!)
We paid online and promptly headed to the hotel to check in out of the not so pleasant weather. When we got there we were greeted by a line of people to the door of reception. "Glad we booked on line", I was thinking as I stood in line. As it turns out there were many people stranded in Kiama due to the trains being out, many of them people working there. To compound the problem the workers at the hotel couldn't get there either. The lady at reception turned to me and asked did I have a reservation. I replied yes, through Wotif. Another pregnant pause. I was getting used to them by this stage. You could see the wheels turning as she stated "oh expletive I haven't told them to take the rooms off". We ended up getting the second last room as the "NO VACANCY" sign was hung out. We were then told our room would be ready in a couple of hours as they had no staff!! Poor buggers. Felt really sorry for them. We spent the ensuing hours at the now overcrowded and understaffed leagues club with many other stranded people. SES were frenetically running around trying to find people emergency accommodation. The bistro was madness with only one chef on (so I was told).
We finally got back to our room and spent an other wise uneventful night.
Next day we decided to can our south coast holiday and headed back up, past home, and spent the rest of the week at beautiful Seal Rocks. You couldn't have picked two more contrasting days. We had sensational weather there, perfect in fact.
We wont forget this holiday in a hurry!!!

I was working at St George Bank across the road from the Leagues club and drove home through Albion Park Rail through the water in my fourby (which has seen dirt roads and had mud in it's wheels lol) and no it wasn't a good day   and just to finish the week well we had to close the branch today as we has glue fumes from new carpets going right through the branch and making everyone sick.... hopefully tomorrow is better as we are going to put the deposit on our camper trailer....

Moto Moto and myself were in Kiama (Kendalls Beach) last weekend from Friday arvo. Friday was OK started on the way down Ousley but was dry at Kiama, well for a while and long enough to set up. Well by Friday night it was a differnt story and the hevans opened, not so bad for us, we had a concrete site, but Moto was on grass, Saturday started dry but not for long  ::)
It was at this point Moto had decided to bail, he made the right choice it never let up all Saturday night  you couldn't even hear the wave bounding on the beach, by Sunday early AM his site was awash as was the powered camp/van sites down behind the amenities.

We ended up bailing out Sunday, (booked till Monday) at one stage on the highway the rain was so heavy we were down to less than 50km, you just couldn't see. We did eventually drive out of it to just light rain, only to arrive home and find water trickling from the laundry to the garage....WTF ! ???  Well that another story.

Oooahhh those glue fumes are really niiiicceee!! lol I bet you were glad you were in the fourbie. We saw the where the water level had been at Albion Park as we drove through on Tuesday and you would have needed some rather serious floaties on your fourbie at the height of it!

We (almost) always turn off gas, washing machine and dishwasher taps before heading out.

Nah wasn't that, we turn off taps also, it was from the rain, no eaves over laundry door rain belts in from wrong direction runs down door and comes under, and thats just with a normal down pour, the dumping we copped here was to much for the guttering, where did it over flow? yep straight down the door.. ???  being compounded by a blockage didn't help.. ???  Yep up the ladder in the rain... ::)  Monday arvo's dumping flooded the garage again the drain couldn't handle it, no damage though.

Pic is my driveway approx 6pm Monday, approx 4"
