I suspect there is no simple solution to this. ie It is a registered vehicle on a public road. In that regard it is no different to a truck or a bus or any other large vehicle etc etc. Playing devil's advocate - if I own a van and usually park it on my own land, then decide to do some building work that necessitates parking the van on the street for a period of time, should I be allowed to? I sometimes visit family and spend a week or so living in their home which requires that I park my caravan on the street for that time. Is that unreasonable?

If we agree that short term arrangements are ok how does the council legislate for that or indeed police it? I suppose they could introduce a permit arrangement but what a PITA that woud be.

I couldn't agree more.. they shouldnt be on the road  O0 :cup: O0
In Yamba,
There are caravans on the road in some residential areas, big vans as well.
I've been told, by a couple of people now, who had campertailers in the double driveways, that the local council Had asked them to move them, out of sight.
When questioned the council officer had nothing to say about the vans parked on the road or front lawns.

Being semi rural/residential here, some people have put 20ft shipping containers in their front lawns, some have been asked to move them to the back yard and some haven't been asked.

Wonder if it comes down to someone complaining about it.

Wonder how much traction this will get....

They should be kept within the property, not on the street or nature strip.

There are storage facilities if space is not available within the property...

Thanks. Loved your post. We were there a month back. Great Cultural/Arts Centre and some good art. I loved the 'termite mound' ones (if you saw them?).

we're planning a longer trip back to Kalk' then south and west to link up with the Duncan Road in WA then north back up to the Victoria hwy and home again.

I'd prefer to take the van with us... but we'll see...

Heading out this Saturday for a day trip on a little used side track to the Victoria River for some fishing, some lunch and some 4wding. With the aid of some locals found a fishing spot called larry's lakes and then a side track to the Vic River and a "crossing" that will eventually bring us back out at Kidman Springs station.

Long time member and to be honest it helped get me through some tough times if only to keep my mind off what could have ended up as the ebony canine.
I have a small direct deposit going to the server fund monthly and I don't miss it one little bit.
I don't get on here much lately as being retired I don't have as much time as I used to. Shed time is very important to me much more than work ever used to be. In saying that it is one mighty resource. I don't know how many problems I have solved or got ideas on how to do things. It would be a total loss to a lot of people if it did fold.
I hope it continues in some form at least. Still happy to contribute..

Silly question here, but are they going to be of any use at all if you don't have a manual ??? (ie 90% of cars on the road!)
Do they still have a brake pedal ??  ;D

headed out for a weekend of music and relaxation.

Sara Storer was playing (solo) at the Katherine outback Experience last Friday evening and again at the Kalkarindji Freedom Festival on Saturday night. (she was a teacher there before her country career took off) This seemed like a great way to spend the weekend so we left the bois with our next door neighbour (and teacher) Jeremy (who had just lost his own dog after a brief illness). So we knew they'd be in very good hands.

Sara was amazing on Friday night. a very relaxed, very laid back atmosphere. it was a bring ya own chair event and we camped at the venue overnight. Had a chance to chat to Sara after the concert and it turns out that a couple of the ATs (assistant teachers) at Yarralin were students of hers when she taught at Kalk'

Saturday was a 5h drive to Kalkarindji. This years Freedom Festival was the 50th anniversary of Gough handing the land back to Vincent Lingiari.

The local Yarralin mob were playing a game of AFL against the Kalk guys and it was a really welcoming friendly vibe.

Come 7.30pm, the concert started. A wide open area backed onto the Victoria river. Police station off to the right and the social club over to the left serving food until after midnight.

Like everyone else... we parked up, put our chairs in front of the Troopy and got comfy. Sara Storer was the 2nd act. (early on and not a huge crowd as yet) and at first I thought that was odd. But as the local bands came on the crowd grew massively as did the vibe and cheering. Clearly the people there love their own bands.

So many Yarralin visitors came over to say hi including many of the kids from school here. The Troopy is a really easy to spot vehicle.

we ended up sharing our night with assorted Yarralin and Kalk' locals until 1am when the final band finished up.

Moved the Troopy to the freecamp in the centre of town and slept a deep sleep. Spent some time at the art centre the next day and ended up in the background of a live ABC interview.

All in all... an amazing weekend.

On the trip back... we decided to try and find a campsite that the 4wd 24/7 Off grid crew camped at when they drove down the Buchannan hwy. Wasn't easy and involved asking some local fishing mob about it. Sure enough they knew *exactly* where it was. Not easy to get into either. Plenty of low range on some steep shale.

But we got there in the end. Be a great weekend getaway. (with our Getaway)
