Title: RIP 29 souls Pike River NZ
Post by: crackacoldie on November 24, 2010, 11:02:53 PM
All hope now appears lost for the poor 29 souls missing underground at the Pike River Coal Mine.  From a miner, father and fellow man my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the families who now deserve the privacy they need to greive at this devasting time.  RIP Guys

Cracka and family

Me to... Spent a fair amount of my youth drinking in Grey Mouth as I grew up until I headed to Aus for the second time at 19 after being here from 10. This will be a hurtful time for those you live and I know a lot of you also have smaller town relationships in farming etc, it will e hard for them to get over.

Thoughts go out to them

As an underground coal miner my thoughts are with the families. To the rest of you the way the press handled this was disgusting, and don't believe a word they say.

As a former underground miner I have to agree darren.  Those guys were dead after the first explosion, and it is disgusting how the media were keeping upbeat about finding them alive, and drawing comparisons with Beaconsfield and Chile.  Coal is nothing like hardrock, if they didn't get out within the first couple of hours, they really had no hope.  And there is no sane manager that would send down an ERT if they didn't know that it was safe to send them down.

Terrible tragedy, and my thoughts are with the families as well.  Media and other so called 'expert' commentators? You can all F$%# off.

All media - is a business. They are in it to make money. It was in their best interest to maintain that there was a possibility of survivors. Until police announced there were no survivors; they were in a position - damned if they do, damned if they don't. If they were to say no survivors, and the next media reporter was to announce that there could be survivors - which one (think about it from the perspective of someone who has never been underground) would they choose to watch.

I hate the rubbish in the media, don't get me wrong. That Koche bloke gives me a headache, literally. I find ABC / SBS media to be less ridiculous like 7/9/10 - the hype and tear jerking they prey on make me puke.

I am in underground mining, but don't consider myself all that experienced in this particular industry. I ignore all the media hype and spoke to friends and work colleges with more experience than I do - for the truth.  :-[

It's an absolute tragedy and great loss, Greymouth is a lovely sleepy little town, I've been there a number of times. My thoughts to the deceased friends and family.

RIP miners...

I just get pissed off when the media feel they have to show over and over and over the families crying and falling apart n stuff.. specially the one chick on her haunches, with her makeup everywhere... Talk about kicking her while shes down.. What does it achieve??

Nothing. Each media entity wants the shot that will get played all over the world - to sell and contra deal with. If one camera man doesn't get the sobbing shot, the next one will. It's the typical media bid to grab your attention and do it's best to string you along and pull every tear jerker known...

But again, what happens if you don't show this stuff - imagine hearing about 29 miners being killed in a mining explosion, and the accompanying footage just showed a mine with a copper talking - it's missing something, it needs the compassion. I believe it can be done, but they all seem to over do it.

Reality TV since early 2000 has changed the way we view things.

As I stated in the first of this thread

my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the families who now deserve the privacy they need to greive at this devasting time.

The media needs to let these people have space and stick to reporting the facts and not the emotions.  Let the families have their dignity.

'This Love' by Dave Dobbyn with the Orpheus Choir of Wellington is a moving tribute to the Pike River 29.
The piece was first performed at a concert attended by members of the miners' bereaved families and was recorded by Radio NZ Concert
