I might be in the market for a 2nd hand swag. I have never used or owned a swag before but I may be doing a road trip with a mate and would need a swag for sleeping in.
I would prefer 1 that doesn't lay flat on top of you and must have a really comfortable matress.
So what do I need to look at in a 2nd hand swag, any brands better or worse than others ?

Do you want to borrow mine? Its probably even up forsale.. its a double so plenty of room
Think I got a single one too... might ahve sold that in the past.. willll look
amgios soon?

One of the dome types, of which there are many. Most come with a minimum of 50mm of foam but that's a bit thin for me to sleep on the ground. I used to add a thermarest mattress which I already owned.
Now I put swag on a stretcher. Working for me for a decade or so now.
Good luck

Darche, Ive had one for nearly 30 years. If you can find one going cheap for $200 or so get it. However they are expensive and you are a tight arse
Woken up in it under 6 inches of snow, and slept under the stars with its insect canopy the ony thing between SHMBO and myself and the stars.
otherwise, buy new, they are pretty good:

Buy a double, not a single... if you want to sleep with a freind the doubles are very close proximity.
Cheers.

As above, get a stretcher too. 100% worth it, even a cheap Kings one. Getting up off the floor sucks, especially if the ground is uneven.
-
what about a bunker style, with a self-inflating mattress?
i have both... works a treat.
-
Just noticed that Anaconda have a Dune double swag special down from $500 to $149, probably cheaper than a second hand one.
Good luck.

Just on cheaper ones... Daughter bought one from the big 4wd place in Dandenong near Jayco and it seriously leaks more than a sieve
It wasnt damp inside, there were large puddles inside - this was after the 2nd round of seasoning... not sure if it was made of canvas or flyscreen.
Their solution "season it again".. which we did for a week....
NFG when we took it back the 4th time.

Good call. Some Cheaper dome types said to have issues with saggy sides as well. I’m a Darche user. Never regetted paying extra.

I have a couple of kings doubles that i bought cheap 2nd hand, never had an issue and would be happy to buy another. Get a 75mm mattress if you can as the 50mm isnt quite enough.
If you want to use it on a stretcher then maybe a king single would be better.
Lots for sale on facebook marketplace of all different brands.

Also remember they arent for everyone... i got my first one from a bloke that used it for few hours, spun out hated it and sold it....

Second that.
My first swag was a hire job on an outback tour. Some people I travelled with wanted to go home early.
Secondhand makes sense.

How do you put a swag on a stretcher ? I've heard of the bunker, not worth the cost for just 1(maybe) trip .

Freestanding dome swag like Darche dusk to dawn just sits on top. There’s a tie down at each end for added security.
Need a stretcher that closely matches width of swag.

Hi,
YouTuber Sharkcaver uses one.
Cheers

if it's strictly a one-off... maybe buy a decent setup (swag, stretcher and mattress), then sell it all once you are finished.
at least get some money back (which might be more than you could outlay on a cheaper, second-hand setup)

I have the original dome swag made by Southern Cross Canvas in Victoria. 25 plus years and fantastic Australian quality.I have a double and my daughters single. Thinking of selling the single as not used but probably a bit far away on the Sunshine Coast.

Definitely, that's why i bought a cheap one ($40) in case i didn't like it,6 years later i have 2 x doubles and 1 single.

Have a look at a Darche Ridgedome Tourer 1100. BCF has them on a good special at times.
Roomy as.
A thing to look at is how high the actual dome part is. Some are just of you, others are very generous.
As mentioned, put it on a stretcher. Warmer, more comfy for sleep, and way easier to get in and out of.
And if you can, do what Paceman suggests.
I bought one for my son's 18th, it won out against everything else in a similar style. Better than a Darche Dirty Dee and Dusk to Dawn.

What did you decide in the end...?

Haven't yet, it's a long way to go to Proserpine to catch a fish, even if they are 30kgs

As others have said, definitely get a stretcher as well.
Having used number of stretchers in the past I can state that NOTHING beats an ARB stretcher. Fastest setup (3 seconds), not rocking and just overall sturdiness - second to none. To top it all, its not even that expensive.
I have been using my Southern Cross swag with this stretcher for few years now and am finally happy with my swag and stretcher setup. Add a gazebo over this setup with side walls and you are laughing mate.

I can’t recommend the Southern Cross swag highly enough, had mine for around 20 years ( branded in ARB red and grey) and before that a Southern Cross tent that is still in the family .
Gruff, Out of interest what size swag/stretcher are you using.
