Does any one know for sure if people are doing this?
The folks are discussing the viability and i said i would reach out here.
They have a 2020 PX3 XLT with a Roller Shutter.
Obviously they would need to put roof racks on the cab.
Anyone got pics / links / installers etc they could recommend?
TIA.

Practicalities of getting it up there aside (as I'm not a boaty and wouldn't have a clue), the first thing to check is the weight.......the weight of the tinny plus the weight of whatever rack/lifting system you are looking at. How does that compare to load rating of the roof set by Ford?
Also, do a google search for "roof rack failures" and have a look at the issues that surfaced maybe 6 months ago. Some manufacturers (the recent issues were with Rhino but I wouldn't be surprised to see of others were the same) reduced the load rating by about 1/3rd if you drove off road (so on anything other than smooth tarmac), and a few folks had fallen foul to this and had roof racks (or rather roof mountings) fail. Even if you're under the stated roof limit set by Ford, better to check with rack manufacturer if they stipulate different static/dynamic or on road / off road limits. I think the issue came down to the mounting system, and the upshot was this that use rivets were weaker and had the potential for the rivets to pull through the sheet metal of the roof.
A tinny & loader have got to be getting up there in terms of weight so better to check what the rack manufacturers state, and check the fitting instructions to see how they fix on.

Something Im thinking about down the track...
These look interesting....

They weigh 90kg. Whats the average tinny? 50kg plus motor? There's 140kg plus of available payload gone....

Saw a guy with one of those on a Hilux a couple of months ago. I remember as I asked him how much it weighed thinking it looked really heavy.
He loved it and said it was good compromise to keeping the weight down a bit over other options.
He was towing caravan as well, but then base camped and was able to tow the boat to the ramp with the in-built boat trailer.

As with anything you carry on your roof it will affect your fuel economy, however, because the boat is the right way up you will have a better fuel efficiency than if your boat was upside down
Id have to think about that one. but they look solid..

Right side up is like a wedge splitting the air (same as it does on the water), upside down it's like a parachute on your roof catching all the air coming off the windscreen.

But isn't the slipstream then swirling down into the open body of the boat, making drag ???
A mate used to take the tail-gate off his HiLux (?) ute, unless he was actually carrying something, & reckoned it improved his fuel economy by 1-2 l/100k ??? :-\

Just dont leave the bungs in the boat if it rains.

Got a BT50, have added a Rhino Rack side loader... only 20 odd kgs..... You need to make sure that ALL mounting points are either on the canopy OR cab.. Not both.

Even then, if it's anything heavier that a light sprinkle, it's going to fill quicker than it empties ... ::)
