Bathurst twice?
Nah, Bathurst should be a stand alone , once a year race.
-
1st round at Bathurst will be a weekend sprint race format, not an enduro

The 500km three-day event from 26-28 February will add a new element to the history of Mount Panorama and will see new faces battling it out to become the inaugural race winner in 2021.

What a great way to start the year.
Theres plenty to look forward to seeing in the driver shuffles this year and one or two to play out yet.
However, what I am really looking forward to is the next gen cars coming out in 2022 and seeing what they do there, hopefully they get it right this time.

Yep it is pretty average that Supercar Car of the Future is that far behind the times current vehicles can't fit into the chassis. Would have been interesting to see the Camaro's running around this year, now we have to wait two more years. That's how you keep your fans.

Nah, Bathurst should be a stand alone , once a year race.
And the traditional 1000k endurance race will be just that.
The first weekend at Bathurst is to fill the void left from the 12 hour (killed by covid)- https://www.speedcafe.com/2020/10/19/bathurst-12-hour-called-off-for-2021/ (https://www.speedcafe.com/2020/10/19/bathurst-12-hour-called-off-for-2021/).
I suspect the first event will be 500k over 3 sprint races of about 25 laps each (like the Gold Coast 600 is). Eventually supercars will have a sprint round in the calendar at Bathurst, but on the new circuit being built on the other side of the hill.
-
No Sandown………...
No Phillip Island...………
What a FN joke. 2 tracks that bring in the biggest crowds bar the proper Bathurst (a sprint round WTF are they thinking!!) and the AGP (which used to be a non points round).
Aimed purely at the couch potato that pay to watch...………...no free to air.
Lost me (well, they lost me years ago when you had to pay to watch and the bullShit rules).

Agreed, very disappointing.

This sadly is how all sport is going.
They make so many sports (footy, cricket, etc) that good to watch on tele, why would you bother going. 3000 camera angles, replays, the only let down with most is rambling commentators but you can decipher whats going on...

The Bathurst 1000 is a sprint race.....no such thing as an endurance race anymore !
The 2nd best race track in Australia ( Phillip Island ) misses out ?
I'll be dead by the time they build another track at Bathurst !!

Drag racing has suffered a similar fate.
Too much money, trying to streamline the show, run 'em through as fast as ya can.
8 car fields when they could run 16 car fields.
Funny thing is, the Drag Challenge style of laid back racing, seems to be hitting a nerve.
All of a sudden, you have XW Falcons, HQ Monaros, Commodore wagons and host of other stuff, running in the 7 second zone.
Tons of cars running 8's, 9's are a doodle and 10 second cars, whilst still fast, are the 12 and 13 second cars form the 90's.
Very few new race cars being built now, to get one day of fun, 10 times a year.
Lots of tough streeters coming on, racing 4 or 5 times a year, and for many, still doing 5 or 10,000klm in the year as well.
I have no idea, why the general public can see it like a big ol pus filled boil on ya arse.
The powers to be...... can't see past their nose.

So what the hell is going on with the commentary team for next year????
4 days ago they announced that Mark Larkham wont be back - https://www.supercars.com/news/championship/larkham-confirms-departure-from-supercars-broadcast-team/ (https://www.supercars.com/news/championship/larkham-confirms-departure-from-supercars-broadcast-team/) which is a real shame. Interesting comment made by SpeedCafe was " It is believed that part of the reasoning for Larkham’s axing was that Supercars management wanted to ‘dumb down’ the telecast and make it less technical moving forward"
, which seems a confusing move from supercars as he did a great job of explaining technical crap to to the average viewer? Realy hope that doesnt translate to the noddy doll getting more air time ::)
And then there was this report "The position of lead commentator Neil Crompton is also understood to be under review". Looks like the fans are blowing up https://wwos.nine.com.au/motorsport/supercars-mark-larkham-blown-away-by-reaction-to-axing-from-tv-broadcast/598984bd-6596-4f2d-b536-defefcd939cd (https://wwos.nine.com.au/motorsport/supercars-mark-larkham-blown-away-by-reaction-to-axing-from-tv-broadcast/598984bd-6596-4f2d-b536-defefcd939cd) and now it looks like a slim chance of a backflip? https://www.speedcafe.com/2020/12/15/supercars-set-for-mark-larkham-backflip/ (https://www.speedcafe.com/2020/12/15/supercars-set-for-mark-larkham-backflip/)
Talk about the "silly" season ::)
-
And now there is a rumour that Mark Barretta from the sunrise morning show will become the face of the supercars telecast............ what-tha???????
I guess thats well in line with their plan to dumb down the telecast ???
here's a link for any fans that want to speak up - http://chng.it/DdbGP4VHLm (http://chng.it/DdbGP4VHLm)

wow... just, wow
a kids show host from Hi 5 ::)
AUTO ACTION understands that Robinson is being brought on board to appeal to a younger, wider audience.

I recon the'll succeed in their goal to dumb down the coverage ::) :o ::)
With Mark Barretta possibly being joined by Abbey Way (channel 7 presenter from House Rules)
Spose it doesn't help that Chanel 7 boss is ex supercars boss James Warburton, which explains all the cahnnel 7 celebs getting the key gig's
From the Auto Action article -
Jess Yates will become the host of all broadcasts, backed by Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes.
They are secure because they are retained by Fox Sports, which has demanded Skaife continue against some resistance within Supercars.
Seven celebrity Mark Beretta, a motorsport fan, will be part of the cross-network team, most likely reporting from the pit lane.
The full commentary line-up is still being debated.
Supercars executives are pushing for a less technical call, with Neil Crompton and Mark Larkham under threat.
Crompton is ‘The Voice Of V8s’, backed by more than three decades as a commentator with top-level racing experience, while fellow ex-racer Larko is popular for his amusing and informative analysis.
According to our broadcast industry sources, neither has a confirmed deal for next year and beyond.

Dark clouds over Erebus.
Anton gone.
Lead engineers for both cars gone.
Now Reynolds exit confirmed. One year into a 10 year contract.

Strong mail is Penrite are following Davey to Kelly Bro's.
Might be time for the vocal team manager to tone it down a little.

Probably a little too late to tone it down. But the good thing about being humans is we have the ability to evaluate ourselves and make changes, I am sure he has had to do exactly that. Although he maybe the type of person that doesn't have this in him. Betty backs him all the way apparently. She may not be a lot better?
Dave may live to regret his decision though. If things don't work out in a year or two with his new team (kellys?) then he will be almost certainly looking for employment and will look back and think Betty gave him virtually a golden road for the rest of his life in terms of needing money.
-
You'd hope he hasn't taken the desicion lightly, but if the rumours are true about his wife being no longer welcome in the pit garage.
Money aside his next 9 years of work and home life would difficult.
Given Penrite are apparently backing the move, probably gives him confidence.

That rumour would not surprise me at all, I have seen first hand how Betty communicates and interacts with her major sponsors, I have met her personally and she doesn’t impress, after dealing with Ross and Jimmy Stone foe a number of years before she entered the game, it was chalk and cheese.

This made me laugh...
Push-to-pass technology provides drivers with the ability to increase the car's power for short periods of time.
-
just take aero off the vehicles and passing tracks, scrap most of the driving rules and bring on the action, let the best driver win.
-
I agree, less aero, less rules...nascar style. Someone punts you off just keep it in the memory bank. Let them sort it out on track.
Paddle shift is fine if that's what makes them happy but Push to pass Im not a fan of in any form of motorsport.

I presume push to pass is similar to drag reduction in F1 ?

I wonder if they would let an ol 59 Zephyr do some laps?
May not be great in the corners compared to those guys, but it might look cool in the straight bits.

They should have never removed Sandown from the calendar.
We are a funny bunch in Australia, we like our motor racing history and having sundown as an enduro event should be the build up to bathurst.

Totally agree Danny. Nor should they have removed Phillip Island from the calendar, which behind Bathurst would be second on most driver's list of top tracks in the country. But, unfortunately, money talks.

Good to see Larko back in the pits 8)
Obviously 7 & Fox took notice of the fan reaction.
Interesting that the 2 DJR cars are midfield in yesterdays practice? Not sure who I'll be backing this year, it's been a wild mix up with the driver and team changes over the off season. I recon Gizzy and Waters will both be strong contenders this year, but I think I'll keep an eye on some of the young guns that are poking their way into more competitive cars/teams this season. Brodie Kostecki shows early form and Will Brown was doing well, right up until he clouted the wall? I'd like to see De Pasquale have a good season (and Reynolds have a crap one >:D)
edit, just caught qualifying and De Pasquale has provisional pole in the DJR car..... so ignore what I said about the DJR midfield results :-[

Great coverage, NOT, WTF is going on with the timing, nothing on the shootout and no times on the totem pole. ???
Lets hope it's just teething issues with the new graphics? Fox wasn't any better, Missed about 5 laps of racing at the start because they were showing replays of non-important events that happened on the 1st lap, spent half the race wondering what lap they were on cause the lap counter graphic was only intermittently on, they no longer show which cars had pitted or not so it was hard to work out the true position from the totem.
Maybe Ch7 in it's efforts to "dumb down" the technical component of the sport to attract a new wider audience doesn't think fans want to know the relevant info about the race....... like what lap there on and who's leading?
-
I missed the race yesterday, so was watching the replay this morning on Kayo.....gets 1/2 way thru then screen goes black then reverts to this morning "live" coverage wtf ??

the beginning of the end for Sandown? 7500 new houses on the 110ha site - 7499 new whingers, it took less than that to close Amaroo and many other tracks.
Dandenong Council is warning that Melbourne Racing Club’s plan to end horse racing at Sandown and redevelop the sprawling racetrack into a new suburb the size of Wangaratta may create traffic congestion and cram in too much housing.
The racing club wants to rezone the 112-hectare site in Melbourne’s south-east from “special use” to housing so it can sell the land for a far higher price. The money would then be poured back into its $300 million redevelopment of Caulfield racecourse.
There has been a racing track on the land since 1888 and it has been both a horse racetrack and motor raceway in its current form since the 1960s. The grandstand at the racetrack, built in 1962 for the motor racing circuit, was heritage listed in 2019.
The racing club approached the council about rezoning the land more than two years ago. The MRC has now drafted a formal rezoning plan and will brief Dandenong’s 11 councillors on it on April 16.
The plan proposes 7500 new homes being built on the sprawling site, divided by the small Mile Creek, which takes up about 10 per cent of the land to be developed, while about 10 per cent of the land would be set aside for parkland.

Another Iconic race track headed for extinction .. Just like Surfers Paradise Raceway . Or it will end up as a highly restricted venue for the odd corporate / driver training sessions like Lakeside Raceway .
Guess the old saying of "If you build it, they will come " rings true in the worst way .
-
It will easily get planning approval for rezoning. A stones throw from Springvale Train Station and Eastlink Freeway.
It is likely too expensive to keep for the small number of events per year vs what they can do with the $$$ to improve the other racecourses.
-
Or it will end up as a highly restricted venue
that would be the best you can hope for, but 112ha in suburbia where theres not a vacant block - think how many billion 2ft sq townhouse/units slums they will cram in there... its a developers wettest dream.
.. and sadly to its own detriment as Jonesy says close to freeway/public transport etc? few back handers cash in brown bags and it will be rezoned
I hope it lasts, but is it more of a deferring the inevitable?
Surprised its lasted this long. Same as Calder Park or Caulfield horse racing, that land would be worth kagillions where its located...
-
Not always easy to make a racetrack turn a profit these days.
Insurances are through the roof..... etc etc.
Then someone says, you could turn that into x number of housing blocks and you can retire.
Unless you a very wealthy and that's no guarantee either , most will sell up like a shot.
Very similar to farming land..... bust ya arse from sun up to sunset.
Great grandad, then grandad, then dad, then the son says whoa, hang on a minute.
Bust my arse all day or sell for 10 million and retire.
I hate seeing racetracks close..... but you'll never stop it.
What was once out in the boonies is now Res A

Just watched that one.
It was good.

Troy Herfoss had a big off in the Superbikes but I'm impressed with Oli Bayliss and he win in the last race. At 17yrs old, he has a huge future ahead of him I think. :cup:

Found something different to todays racing in a Facebook group I belong to, three different manufacturers and three different styles of cars. Hopefully will allow me to share on here.

I was reading, Rachelle Splatt, (bad name for a drag racer) will be doing a Top Fuel demo with the dragster at the Townsville meeting.
It won't go even close to hooking up, but will be a great thing for folks who have never experienced a Top Fuel car before.

Imagine that
all different displacement, aero packages and weights
How the hell did they make that great racing

I saw a bit somewhere on the web about her going to Townsville……I presumed they had a drag strip at Townsville.
Well, she won’t need to do a “run”……just light them up for as long as she can so the petrol heads can enjoy the sound.

Double header announced for Townsville, this weekend will be 2 x 250k races, next weekend will be 3 x sprint races.

It does, Anton came to win, good drive.

Felt a bit sorry for young Will Brown. rookie year, first time ever starting from the front row, pit stop stuff-up cost him 8 seconds and he vinished 9 seconds behind the lead.
Tyre change mistake cost him his first main game podium :-[

Yeah, good to see some new names in the lead pack with Will Brown and Brodie making a late charge

Good to see that DJR are still pulling bullShit , Wrong tyre on Car 11 for the second race , cop a fine and loose points points but leaves car 11 with a full set of new tyres for the third race . Accident my arse .

Bit hard to see it as an accident, they might be DJR but you have two teams, #11 and #17.
But Will and Anton had a good race, just a shame the Shit tyres don't have a race in them.

Great drive today by Will Brown for provisional poll.
I’m hoping the Mostert/Holdsworth duo have a good weekend.

Gotta say that watching the Camaro and Mustang cutting laps left me a little saddened. While in recent times the cars only really resembled Aussie cars, now even that’s gone. Never gonna be the same again

Had a power black out in the session, came back just to see him rip that out.
That's quick.

Bothe erebus cars disqualified from the top 10 result, they'll start 9 & 10.
The doors were underweight ::)

something like whole 200gms. The whole car was over the weight but as Larko said the individual doors also have a set weight.

Same argument could be applied to DJR getting pinged for valve clearance on 5 of 8.
No difference in the real world, but limits were exceeded....

Great race by Chaz and Lee. Even if SVG didn't have tyre problems I doubt he was going to catch Chaz.
Cam Water and James Moffat 2nd and the young gun Brodie Kostecki and David Russell 3rd
Championship, SVG 1st Jamie Whincup 2nd. I think they said Chaz jumped Will Davidson for 3rd.
