Title: Caravan park etiquette
Post by: leighton coull on April 23, 2019, 04:23:52 PM
Hey Swaggers,

Just curious to hear your thoughts/responses on Caravan park etiquette...
Is it ok to take short cuts through your campsite!! Or are you the one taking the short cut..
I don't know about you guys but I don't appreciate other campers cutting through my campsite especially when they don't even acknowledge you and they keep on doing it. They just storm through on their way to the toilet or a friends campsite and then repeat on the way back >:(
I make every effort to go round but when the time comes and  i have to cut through someone else's site i'm going to make the effort and say hello or stop for a chit chat, and try not to do it again. Do you find this rude or am I just a bit over top.

Do you find this rude

Yes, I'd politely remind them to walk on the path not through your camp site.

If that fails, break out the night time ninja...

I think it’s rude.
We are looking at camp sites at the moment, and the exact topic just came up

Think I'd  be lucky if they stormed through on the way to the toilet. Dirty pigs here just piss on the ground between the sites.

Don't park your Butt in van parks unless you have to do laundry or wash your butt  , if you do suffer  :cup:

I always tell my kids not to cut through others campsites as I do think its rude. And I remember my parents telling me the same thing as a kid!

Poor form to cut through anyone else's site.
I wish this was my main concern over caravan parks.
More concerned about small sites, noisy air conditioners, fluffy white dogs barking while left in their vans... the list could go on.

I get most annoyed when parents unload a bunch of kids that are free to run riot around the park. In particular around my campsite. While out fishing we have come back to camp to find our power cord has been pulled out of the post or the van and the waste hoses trampled on till they are next to useless. Really handy when the freezer, fridge and beer fridge have been off all day. This has happened several times over the years. I don't blame the kids, its their stupid parents that do not teach their siblings park etiquette. They rock up, set up camp and as long as their kids leave them alone they seem to be happy.
End of rant.

Been looking at caravan parks on the Tweed coast to spend a few days at. In the last 24 hours the vacant sites have had some weird things happen
The rules over the peak period is min 4 night stay.
So, the park managers have made it that the remaining sites have only 2 night vacancies.
I called up and said I would like a site please for 2 nights and he says sorry, min for night stay.
Umm but you only have 2 nights free. Oh yes he says, you pay for 4 nights but get 2.
Ummm no way

Ah, etiquette. Something else society is slowly trampling into the ground... Public holiday periods seem to bring out the worst in other campers.

If you're in a caravan park (which we avoid like the plague these days) you're crowded in like a can of sardines with unruly children, adults of various up until the wee hours of the morning on the grog talking at full volume like they're the only ones there (often while their kids are still running around or swimming in the pool "supervised" by no one over the age of 10), people cutting through your campsite like its a thoroughfare...

Even at the larger campgrounds you get the people who have to be a hero and take the track in 2WD that's now "a challenge" because of a bit of rain (who cares you now chopped up an access track to the point that no one else can use it), dogs are left unattended to chase stock and stalk others in their own campsites, muddy open areas become skid pans, shower blocks have 20+ minute wait times and are full of mud...

I go camping to get away from people and relax... so unless I'm going somewhere I know I'll be the only one - or one of very few people - I don't go on long weekends anymore.

To those that suggest caravan parks are only useful for laundry or showers - you know you don't need to go there for them either? Wikicamps is your friend! I've had free or coil-operated hot showers in towns all over the country when we haven't had or didn't want to set up our shower, and coin laundromats are still in a lot of big places... otherwise there's always a bucket and some soap if you're desperate! I don't do caravan parks unless they are the absolute last-resort option now.

Try this little [ older style ] park just south of Pottsville, about 300 m walk to the unpatrolled beach,  usual only a couple of fisho's along there, be realy careful if swimming as its known for Rips and a fair sweep, low tides would be best / think you can have a fire / not flash but comfortable ..   http://wooyungbeach.com.au/ (http://wooyungbeach.com.au/)     about 20 minutes to Tweed / Coolangatta / 50 +  min to Mount Warning / Mebbin state forrest / Border Ranges etc .. Get in touch with Murwillumbah show grounds  as they allow camping there too    https://murwillumbahshowground.com/venue/murwillumbah-showground-caravan-camping-area/ (https://murwillumbahshowground.com/venue/murwillumbah-showground-caravan-camping-area/) .     Might be some alternates to caravan parks for some here for future trips too http://caravanersforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=50444 (http://caravanersforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=50444)

We can sit here and type thousands of words about the lack of caravan park etiquette until we're black in the face.
Until the people who are in a position to do something about it, the CP owners and managers, actually get off their clackers and DO something about it they have no right to carry on and complain and moan about people deciding to eschew CP's and free camp.
If I could be certain that I would be treated with respect and consideration by fellow campers and the CP managers and be charged a reasonable fee I would be a lot more inclined to use a CP. As things are currently, apart from a select few CP's, the can all go to hell and I'll free camp.

It does not worry me in van parks that people walk past our old van, not many do as it covered in dirt and looks like crap, Craig

We haven’t... but reviews and comments I’ve read suggest it’s not our cup of tea

I’m not saying YouCamp is perfect, but for public holiday periods it’s a great alternative. When you’re paying similar prices for bush camps or CPs that are bursting at the seams, I’d rather pay for a YouCamp. Sure it might not have facilities, but we don’t need them anyway... and paying for peace and quiet is 100% worth it to me!

Wouldn't go anywhere within cooee of it on either a long weekend ::), or a weekend during school holidays, >:D, but if you go out during school time, the place is pretty empty & very enjoyable :D

With my 50kg BIG German Shepherd attached to the chassis when parked up, I never have to worry about people taking shortcuts. They all take a wide path around. Was an exception last year, a Spanish couple and their young daughter walked straight up to my dog, who loves children anyway, and started playing with him. Some guard dog.  ;D

Haha, that's funny, it's always the way. The dogs that are meant to be big and scary turn out to be soft, the little fury ones turn out to be  savage ankle biter's.

you could say that about 99% of places.

Absolutely. We now avoid anywhere that’s open to the general public on “peak” long weekends after a number of less-than-idea experiences over the years!
