Need some advice, our new tow vehicle will have 265/65/17 BF Goodrich Tyres, our KK camper has 285/70/16, would it be a good idea to change the tyres and or rims on the camper or will it not make a great deal of difference.
-
I have done it twice before. When the 3rd time comes round i wouldn't bother with the expense.

Track width is different on my trailer to tow vehicle. And had only 1 flat in 6 years.
If going remote maybe, otherwise as above IMO.
Save your money, unless its a no cost option.

I have done it with the 200 series and the KK. I had to specify I wanted this when I bought the trailer. I like having all the same wheels as this will be my set up when we do our first big lap.
Only thing you may have to look at is your offset on the camper. If the offset is not the same you have to change the trailing arms out and this is about $7000.
So probably not worth it if you have to go down that road.

We also matched our vehicle when we bought the KK had an 80's but soon found out that it didn't have the towing power we need (petrol/LPG) so we moved to the 100's turbo diesel. Different offset but still kept the tyres the same because we figured in a pinch and we where somewhere that didn't have our tyres they could switch rims. We are now going to a BT-50 so we still wont have the matching offset, but also different tyres and rim size.

Personally with your set up I wouldn't worry about it. How many flat tyres have you had over the years.

no.

Doesn't really matter, but check to see if they can interchange between them.( clearance etc )

How often do you change vehicle? That can impact on the decision. Personally for me it just seems like another overrated expense. I am feeling repulsed to admit this, but I must regretfully concur with the Lost man...lol

Our thoughts were that the 3 tyres on the camper were really good and the spare under the cruiser. The tyres on our Landcrusier are getting due for changeover so we thought we could put the ones from the camper on it before selling it.

Just been through the camper/hybrid selection process. One of the things we looked at was matching the wheels and tyres but the advice we received was that it wasn't really worth the expense. We decided we will carry a couple of spare tubes and some tyre levers for occasions when the tyre plug kit isn't enough.

We can't match the wheels as offset is different anyway, was more concerned with the size difference running 16' on the camper and 17' on the car.

You could maybe go to a tyre with the same overall diameter. When we were looking it was an option we explored. Have a look here https://tiresize.com/comparison/. 265/70/16 tyres are the same overall diameter as 265/65/17. In the end, it wasn't an option for us because the 16inch wheels from the Mitchell won't fit our Pajero which has 17inch.

I like running the same size tyre all round. I dont have the same wheels as its in the too hard basket to get the disco wheels onto the camper. I just run some steel wheels that have a suitable offset to match the track of the tow rig.

I've matched all of mine, but waited until the tyres on the camper were ready for replacement anyway. Expensive exercise to make the change when you have good tyres already.
It really depends on how 'remote' you are going to be travelling and how prepared you are to do a tyre repair in the middle of nowhere.

We need to replace a couple of tyres on our cruiser before we sell it, so were think of using the tyres off the camper which are in great nick instead of buying new ones

We went from 15" tug and trailer to 16" tug and 15" trailer with no ill effects. The roads travelled while having the 'mis-match' included a fair amount off outback dirt roads and bitumen. When the time came to renew the trailers tyres they were upgraded to match the tugs. The trailer towed the same regardless of setup.
I must admit to being a fan of BFG ATs, so the tyres were always the same type although not always the same series. When going to the High Country I quite often put muddies on the tug, but don't have any for the trailer which does fine on the ATs.
