Here's the reason with record sales again of 1,177,584 cars in 2016-
http://www.msn.com/en-au/motoring/news/2016-sets-a-record-for-australian-new-car-sales/ar-BBxUOuL? (http://www.msn.com/en-au/motoring/news/2016-sets-a-record-for-australian-new-car-sales/ar-BBxUOuL?)
and you can work out the size of the domestic car fleet from the ABS here-
http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/mf/9309.0/ (http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/mf/9309.0/)
So that's 75.1% of 18.4mill registered vehicles giving a domestic fleet of 13,818,400 and if you divide that by the 2016 new car sales it means we're turning over our fleet in 11.73 years now and that figure has been declining.
Basically unless your bus is something special, and it's 12 years old you can drive it down the squeezers in perfectly good running order, given todays modern engineering and lubrication technology, because noone will want it. So much for over-servicing them eh, as Sims won't care whether you changed your oil twice as often as the now customary 12 month/15000km intervals anyway. With the advent of even more complex driver assisted digital technology, you better start thinking of that new car purchase as a 10 yr crusher.

lf this a few years older than it should be then its worthless . But given the age & Ks , its got to be worth something to somebody . The major problem is " Go Buy New " & have it serviced by them for warranty >:D & $ Ask anybody that has an Older Rig out of Warranty about the service thing ??? & you will be told " As Required or not "
-
There's a few factors influencing that trend nowadays. Firstly fewer younguns have any experience with the tools so they have to pay professionals to do all their servicing and maintenance and as cars get older, it's not the engine and drive train that wears out- http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=50825.0 (http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=50825.0)
and with increasingly sophisticated electronics, no-one wants intermittent headaches like that, particularly women. They go off a car real quick if it breaks down on them.
Then there's the attraction of better technology and perhaps a generation getting used to treating cars like smartphones and digital technology. It's all very well thinking your 11 year 9 month old car is worth something, but if they keep pumping new cars into the market like they are, even the schoolkids and uni students will turn their nose up at your oldy because of the wealth of choice. There's a certain holding cost to owning a car and no-one's going to own another car just because it's dirt cheap to buy and in that regard one of the lad's mates found the wreckers weren't interested in common cars over 9 years old so work that out. He couldn't give it away.

Regarding the idea of cars being more or less worthless after 10 - 12 years; this anecdotal story fits the bill..
A guy buys a top of the range CLS350 Mercedes; fully optioned with sunroof etc etc in 2006 for $160K.
A friend of my mate buys it secondhand off the original owner in 2012 for $60K.
In Dec 2016 - this second owner wants to trade it; and the Mercedes dealer says they'll give him $15K for it as a trade-in ... (probably will have it in the yard at $30K, ono?).
Anyways - my mate offers him the $15K himself; and he is now happily driving around in a 2006 CLS350 Mercedes; ('that looks brand new to me' at least)...

Looks pretty but he's had enough-

"Car still not run right lot money when in to it .
I got the compression check is all off the cylinders readings is 175 on each that very good for it
Very low km"

And then there's the humble Prado, 8 years old, moderate klms, 1 lady driver :), new $55K, sell today $30K+ :cup:

With regard to the 1st post & the number of cars, its no wonder the road toll keeps rising
Impossible not to add 1.2m cars to the roads & not have more road fatalities. The road toll should be reported as a percentage rather than a set # imo.
-
Moggy , you are a champ !
Eggzachery , more users equals more 'accidents' , I was watching the stats for motorcycles in Vic - the toll has gone up .... Gasp , shock and awe .
BUT , the rise is fatalities correlates to the increased rise in unlicensed riders or those on over capacity motorcycles .
The other half of the spike is stolen cycles being bent - usually with a poor result for the thief .
If you are texting and bin it , If you are drunk ,If you are on drugs , If you are are a halfwit and bin it .
I am not really sympathetic to the result - if you have killed someone else due to your negligence it should be classified as murder .
Unfortunately we have a society of soft cocks , whose poor petal had a bad childhood .......so no consequences .
- going back under my rock now -

Humphreythebear,

Popular car and the exception rather than the rule but don't forget in Sept 2008 that $55000 was worth $64908 in Sept 2016 dollars

It is and despite the annual death toll around 1200 our roads are much safer than they used to be-
http://www.caradvice.com.au/327847/2014-australian-road-toll-falls-to-lowest-level-since-1945/ (http://www.caradvice.com.au/327847/2014-australian-road-toll-falls-to-lowest-level-since-1945/)
and they're going to be even safer with increasing driver assist technology
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFuMAc8S8HI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFuMAc8S8HI)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk4zIqOiOjc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk4zIqOiOjc)
and they're better than you at four wheel driving dummy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18aGhU6cdtY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18aGhU6cdtY)
The only question being how long will all that technology last trouble free?

Tell him he can have mine for 50k even 40k
He was specifically after a 4 door ute GU with a factory 4.2. Mine fitted the bill for him and the best bit, he didn't want any of the "extras" mine has, so all that was gonna stay was the bullbar, 4.3 diffs and the Denco.
If he went closer to $70k I was going leave everything "as is"............................maybe..................

He can do what he likes to mine if he buys it.. and I'll leave everything as it is inc Garrett, custom IC etc...
