I'm looking for some sort of metal inline water filter to go on the end of my water intake hose (standard garden hose size) that sucks water out of a bucket / creek etc, into our campers shower set up....anybody know a decent one to get that isn't stupidly priced?
I want it metal for the weight to hold it down on the bottom of the bucket, currently the hose floats to the top at times and starts sucking air instead of water. Need it to be a filter, as I had a blockage at the existing mesh filter that's before my pump this week, it's a pain to clean that out, so I want the filter to stop crap going up the hose. I have seen what I want somewhere previously, but no idea exactly who sells them. A quick google didn't find the one I have seen previously, so hoping others on here have / use something similar.
Any ideas of what to use appreciated :cheers:

If you want more weight, then team it up with a foot valve.
Or if you want to go cheap, a bit of stocking or a sock with a few nuts in it for weight as well as to stop it collapsing and getting drawn up the hose with a rubber band to hold it in place works well too.

Hey Mal ..
Go to a plumbing supplier and get a section of a stainless steel sand filter, cut from a water bore spear, Can get smaller diameter ones than this ... Cost about $1 per inch, but that was a long time ago ..
Bumblings for a PVC end cap and screw in hose barb to fit a garden hose and sikaflex ... 10 minutes of jigging around and you have a water filter head unit like this . Red cap is from an Oz post postal tube ..fitted perfect . ;D
We use this filter on Fraser all the time to fill 25 ltr drums from the seepage creeks for shower water, only get a tiny little bit of super fine sand make it though to the pumps filter, 15 odd years and still going strong ..

I have been going to try a bucket with the hose connected near the bottom and the top covered in fly screen mesh. It should sit on the bottom of the river and stop most larger things from being sucked in. Anything that does get in will sink and settle on the bottom. Time will tell.

Will have a look at those strainers Hoykes :cheers: but what I have seen is a smaller version of what edz has mentioned (I was thinking it belonged with a sand spear myself, so I'm on the right track). Will try plumbing and irrigation shops this week to see what they sell, was hoping someone here knew exactly who sells what I want though.

Just get yourself a plastic inline mesh filter and wrap a bit of sheet lead around it, you need bugger all, have used the same for the pick up on the under bonnet shower when I throw it in a creek, been using it for years now.

it's an option cheers, but I have seen what I want previously, just need the right person to know where they are sold.

This is what I use to pick up from a jerrycan or bucket.
Brass non-return valve with strainer on the intake side, and a 1/2" barbed fitting screwed into the suction side.
I got all the parts from my local hardware (in Greenbank) that has a reasonable range of irrigation bits. Cost was less than $20 complete I think ?
Being brass, it has enough weight to lie flat on the bottom of the Jerry. The mesh filter is not super fine, but it will stop the chunky bits that wont go through the pump. You could put your some pantyhose over the end of it if you wanted a finer filter.

looks good mate, pretty much the idea I'm after really at a nice cheap price.....it's not what I have seen previously, but should work. Not interested in super fine filtering, will look into similar set ups and mesh differance sizes :cheers:

Rummy I'm thinking you may be remembering the small stainless steel water / sand filter that BCF used to sell for about $80, Not part of a sand spear kit, but made by the same mob that used to supply BCF, from memory they were made up on the sunny coast somewhere ..
only about 40 mm in diameter and roughly 60 mm long with an outer tube that had 8 or 10 mm holes drilled through it swiss cheese style ..

sounds about the right size edz, I'll check those links when I'm not on my phone and see what I find.

Ended up visiting an irrigation shop today and purchased pretty much what Spada pictured above. Instead of the barbed fitting and hose clamp, I grabbed an extra fitting that allows the standard hose tap fitting to screw on the end of it... so now it just clicks on the end of the hose, and I can remove it after use to fit a connector that joins both ends of the hose together for storing away. Total cost was $21

that may have worked nicely except it sounds a bit light in weight ...i do wonder how much restriction it would have on the pump whilst it sucks the water though, which I see was mentioned already. Might have a look at Bunnings and grab one to trial, cheap enough to give a go anyhow.
