When a friend calls you and tells you like it really is.....when your friend is hurting and tells you how they feel......how there lives are turned up side down...how they can't enjoy the first time feelings of every one else...because they can't be there.....but... they hold strong and silently reflect there situation and find positives out of difficult situations.....and at the same time fnds the path and direction in there own difficult journey as quite irrelevant...which is not quite true.....I have a friend like that...!!!!!....This person will remane anonymous ....this person will know whom i speak of.....the really silent strong person....Whom i gladly call ....My Friend......
Cheers Tracker.

I hear you!
A real mate is someone that is there in your darkest moments and selflessly gives when you are at your most vulnerable. They are our most precious resource and rarely know how important they are or seek accolades.
When I was diagnosed with cancer my mate (3 states away) was on a plane and at the hospital. Just knowing they are there is something they will never understand.
I have a mate like that!

He's a lucky man to have you as a friend mate. :cup:

Tracker, good on your mate for opening up & getting things off his chest - as they keep saying, it's vital for blokes to talk about problem's & ask for help.
I would say though that you've possibly got the title of your thread round the wrong way - it should be "When does someone know he has a real friend?"
When he can ring a mate, open his heart & soul about problems & the mate listens & helps :cup:

I have lots of acquaintances who I see all the time for beers/chats, but I also have 3 guys who I call my best friends. It’s these 3 guys I ring when I want to discuss anything personal because I know these guys won’t judge or make our conversation public and they know my life’s high & lows for past 30+ years.
Two of these guys don’t even live locally so 95% of our catch ups are over the phone and it can go months between our chats, but when we do catch up it’s never awkward and it’s like we only spoke last week.

When your wife goes into hospital and they sit there all night making sure you're ok, then drive you 200km to Melbourne to another hospital.
Then they get off a 24 hour flight back from Europe, drive 3 hours straight to your workplace to surprise you for your birthday even though they're as jetlagged as hell.
And absorb you into their greater family so you get invited to all family events etc as another family member.
A closer and better friend I'll never find.
