I still haven't worked out how to make separate albums in their site or if i have settings on private viewing and what not there yet, Photobucket was so much easier to navigate then this hosting site is. Might need to try looking at it on the home computer instead of the tablet and see if that shows stuff differently, i used to struggle with Photobucket on the tablet also...lol

Just had our fourth storm in as many days. Glad we're not camping !!!we were camped on Straddie for 11 days over Xmas and New Year.....watched storm after storm hitting everywhere in SEQ and Northern NSW but where we were camped on the Northern end of North Stradbroke Island. Several times looking at the radar i commented to mates, "geez i'm glad we aren't camping at such an such location".....even the bottom end of North Straddie at Main Beach looked to cop a heap of rain and storms that we missed out on. We got real lucky with our Xmas camping weather this year, but i reckon there's quite a few people that'd have some horror stories to tell.

Smashed overnight apparently...we just got 80kh winds and abit of rain at our place...there's a few areas still without power currently, coppers doing traffic light duty at Sleeman Sports Complex as I went past a half hour ago. Redland Bay recorded 114kph winds, out Boonah and Beaudesert way had tennis ball sized hail...just depends where you live as to how bad you copped it.

The TV news likes to beat up a frenzy bigger than the actual storm. I remember after a smallish cyclone (cat 2)in NQ once, all the friends and family ringing in a panic to check on our welfare after seeing the reports on the telly. We were confused cause the biggest concern in the town was the shade sail at the pub got damaged ?

We only had 10 hours without power, but it dropped out right as I finished cutting, grinding and welding a heap of steel brackets in the shed.
Washing off all that metal dust and sweat (38 degrees in the shed all day) in my bucket and cup shower was not a great way to end my weekend.
But nothing we haven’t been through many times before.... ;)

On our old house in NSW Blue Mts that I built and lived in for 30 years had tank water / septic etc, we would often experience large wind storms that would result in power outages for days.My suggestion from that experience is that the best purchase you can make is a genie. I had a 4.5 Kva Honda genie.
My set up included a bypass on the kitchen rinnai gas hot water heater ( had 2 hot water heaters for house) to allow hot water to bathroom. Genie to run water pump, septic pump and air blower and fridge and rinnai heater electronics. Originally gas lanterns for lights but towards end I installed a few LED strip lights wired back to a battery that I would keep charged. Gas cooking, fire place for warmth and we where happy self sufficient campers.
The best thing the power company did in our area was change street mains from single wires for each phase to a bundle cable resulting in fewer local outages, but this didn't help if it was the high voltage lines that failed.
Now I'm in Brisbane my only concern is the septic and fridge and again the gas heater that services the "granny flat" bathroom. I now can just get the van genie going to power up those items.

We have two full size 'fridges, a three quarter size stand up freezer, beer fridge on deck and the 40 litre Engel and run all, no problems plus the pump for house water, lights, 'puter and if necessary, the telly.
Genny has AVR.

No money coming is gunna break me, i'm finding with no income, i'll have to cut back to 3 meals a day.
I might have to break out the snorkel and flippers and start mowing anyway.

Nice weather station Steffo what brand is it MateIt's an Acurite. It drops it's info into the desktop when scheduled. Has a wireless connected outside sensor. There are better ones on the market but this covered my needs.

Maybe this should be in the rant thread...........but where has all the bloody rain gone.that's why you don't go by what tv news says...Thursday night Weatherzone forum said rain would ease / stop Saturday morning and if the sun was out there was a chance of a storm occurring in the afternoon, any rain would likely be up Sunny Coast and down the Goldy and into NSW which is what happened, they also said today is a chance of a storm this afternoon. The problem with much of tv news is, they take SEQ's forecast and report it to being Brisbane alone.

My cousins have been evacuated, the creek beside my sisters place is getting close to bursting and she is cut off from getting to my other sister’s and brother’s houses.
Some of our Townsville swaggers may have more accurate details, but I’m hearing stories about the army possibly having to take drastic action on the dam wall if the levels get too high.
Townsville is one of those special places, while it is in the wet tropics it doesn’t really get proper wet events all that often. It’s times like this when we see how poorly the city is able to handle proper rainfall.
Hope everyone up there is safe and things don’t get as bad as some are predicting.

As I have lived there for almost 70 years, I find some of your comments interesting. I doubt many other major cities experiencing rainfall of around a metre plus in a few days would cope as well or any better, unless things have changed since I dealt with them, the army are neither equipped or permitted to do anything to the dam.
Townsville is not considered to be in the wet tropics, which starts approximately 100km or so further north, but it does get very intense rainfall on occasions at reasonably frequent intervals, I recorded 680mm in 20 hours in January 98 and there have been many other occasions of very high rainfalls, the main problem at the moment is consistent very heavy rainfall in the catchment area for an extended period, usually intense rainfall such as this in the tropics, tends to last 24 to 48 hours then ease off to a more steady rate.
My understanding from civil engineer's who were in QLD gov water resources dept and the Council, is the dam flow rates are controllable by the flood gates up to about 300% capacity, over that, water will be above the flood gates and flow cannot be controlled, the possibility of that ever happening is considered extremely improbable!
Unless we get extremely heavy rain prior to 9am Sunday I expect to be a bit over 1200mm since 28th January, when I check the gauge in the morning

in 2011, there was stories doing the rounds that Wivenhoe's dam wall was suspect and about to fail.
Also talk of uncontrolled issues with over the spill ways (earth style) and how they would wash away quickly.
True or not, I don't know, as the reporters an stories were getting out of control.
Hopefully, all will be ok with the dam up north.

I happened to be stuck at a relatives house not far from the Ross River waiting for the highway north to reopen for that one.
Townsville is not considered to be in the wet tropics, which starts approximately 100km or so further north, but it does get very intense rainfall on occasions at reasonably frequent intervals, I recorded 680mm in 20 hours in January 98 and there have been many other occasions of very high rainfalls, the main problem at the moment is consistent very heavy rainfall in the catchment area for an extended period, usually intense rainfall such as this in the tropics, tends to last 24 to 48 hours then ease off to a more steady rate.
My understanding from civil engineer's who were in QLD gov water resources dept and the Council, is the dam flow rates are controllable by the flood gates up to about 300% capacity, over that, water will be above the flood gates and flow cannot be controlled, the possibility of that ever happening is considered extremely improbable!
Unless we get extremely heavy rain prior to 9am Sunday I expect to be a bit over 1200mm since 28th January, when I check the gauge in the morning
I noticed yesterday that the Ross river had already passed the record height from that 1998 event.
Townsville’s average annual rainfall is 1100mm, so to have 1200mm in these last few days is just amazing.
My comments regarding Townsville flooding are purely observational. As you know South Townsville floods on the spring tides.
Townsville has a very small catchment area which is sandwiched between the mountains and the ocean. The areas most populated are very flat and the majority of the city center and to the south and west is built on mud flats. Natural drainage is poor in a lot of suburbs (the newly built ones seam to be better then those older ones closer to the city center).
Apart from the occasional cyclone that passes by, Townsville really just doesn’t get proper rain events when compared to the surrounding areas of that region.
At only around 750 square km the Townsville catchment area is much smaller then the surrounding river systems.
The Burdekin, for example, receives roughly the same annual rainfall, while its catchment is over 130,000 square km and has only recorded 10 major floods.
You mentioned other cities getting that amount of rainfall.
The 2011 Brisbane floods had exactly that. Over 1200mm of rain fall on a catchment area of almost 14,000 square km (18 times bigger then Townsville’s catchment) in the period leading up to the actual flood, including around 500mm falling above the dams in the immediate days prior.
Poor management of the dam that was built for flood mitigation but now primarily used for water storage worsened the down stream flooding.
Which, thanks for clearing up, I was hearing the same about the Townsville dam.
Some people get a bit over excited in big events like these and I was hearing all sorts of hyped up rumors about the dam wall.
Pretty much exactly as was happening in the Brisbane flood.
It’s a big call, release more water now and flood a few homes or don’t release it and risk a major incident if it keeps raining.
Anyway, this will be one for the record books and I hope everyone gets through it ok.

Its pissing down there still on the radar at the moment.i'd assume the concerns with Wivenhoe were real.... it wasn't that long ago really (about 20 years maybe) that they discovered the dam wall wasn't properly anchored to the bedrock below, and that if some of the earth started washing away beside it that the entire wall could possibly turn sideways. From what i was told (by a family member engineer involved with it) they ended up drilling holes down through the spillway into the bedrock below and post tensioned reo into it
in 2011, there was stories doing the rounds that Wivenhoe's dam wall was suspect and about to fail.
Also talk of uncontrolled issues with over the spill ways (earth style) and how they would wash away quickly.
True or not, I don't know, as the reporters an stories were getting out of control.
Hopefully, all will be ok with the dam up north.

some insurance companies are experts at dancing around the fine print.......will it be classed as flood" or "storm water run off?So far my house is ok, but at least my insurer - Westpac - reached out via text on Friday afternoon stating “if you are affected by the impending flood and need to make a claim, please call us”.
I suspect there will be lots of reports of people believing they are covered, and insurance companies believing they are not.
I know a civil engineer that regularly does work for insurers and their position is “if there is any doubt go in favour of the insured”. They don’t want to go to court and by and apparently the courts tend to rule against them if there is even the smallest doubt.
I guess time will tell but hopefully the rain stops and the river doesn’t rise too much higher.

BOM recently modified the estimate of the expected rainfall about 11pm, now predicting 450mm + over the dam catchment by 9am Monday, 300mm fell over dam between 2pm and 4pm.
Ergon conservative estimate, 15,000 properties without power at 10pm, mainly due to disconnection of suburbs because safety concerns from flooding. Currently I'm one of the lucky ones with power and only rainwater runoff, street still has been 300mm under water for most of the night.

Ross River Dam had Dam strengthening done about 6 or 7 years ago with tensioned ground anchors that have been installed to allow load checks every 5 years, this occurred last year. Most dams in Oz are always under constant review under ANCOLD to ensure they meet the ever changing compliance, ie 1 in 1000 year flood events. The same did and does apply with Wivenhoe and many other dams throughout oz. Company I work for recently completed upgrades to Boondooma and Lesley Harrison. Somerset will be next with a Shit load of anchors to be installed to meet ANCOLD standards, hence why Somerset has been sitting at 80% over the past 2 years.
Some dams have fuse plugs, ie Dam walls away from the main Dam that can be blown to relieve pressure on the Dam with big floods as a last resort. Think Wivenhoe needs to go to 210% for this to occur and if it ever has to those downstream would cop it. Unfortunately RRD can on rely on the spillway gates and if the water overtops the wall (higly unlikely) then its major.

I hope we don't get 1200mm, but a decent drop of rain would be very appreciated.
We also haven't had a day under 30c for the entire summer, our average high is 34.9 during the month of Feb.
The highest we've had is 42.9...so friggin hot.

10,000 gal tank for drinking water washing cars and stuff, but I can draw from it for the house by switching some valves.
1,500 emergency tank, so if ya run everything out over a long week-end, you still have some backup until the water truck gets there.
All run on a separate pump, so if a pump Shits itself, we're still good to go.
Tons of water here at the moment, its just the yard is screwed.
Front dam (little bloke) dead dry.
Back dam, about 2 feet of water in it.
The 50 ducks and 4 turtles that live there will be fighting it out soon for the last drops.
I'm getting sparks off the tyres on the cars as I drive over the grass.
Poor ol farmers, are running irrigation every day.... the sun steals most of it.

Yeah, the models seem to have it turning north further out so bugger all rain except for the coast, still plenty of uncertainty though so likely to change again.

Down to a Cat 1 now and seems to have pulled up a fair way off the Coast, looks like it will sit there for the Weekend before heading North. I think wind and waves will be about the extent of the effects.they showed a beach this morning that was pretty much gone, not sure which one it was - could have been TV speak - in other words very little changed not sure anymore.

Fair enough, I didn't really see any media coverage of it so don't know what they were saying. The models I saw at that stage though showed it pull up further from the coast with no real rainfall, and it hanging there for a day or two before weakening and moving North which is what happened. The models aren't perfect but out to about 3 day's are generally pretty accurate. Further out than that everyone is pretty much just guessing, computer models included, but at least they normally show a low level of certainty as well.

We get a tad more heat out here than Brisbane, and i'm pretty sure, yesterday was the first day this summer, we dipped under 30 degrees.
The grounds here are shot to hell at the moment.

All morning, its been a dirty sky. I'd gone down to Rosewood to have a look at a second 64 Cadillac. (The idiot wasn't home either)
Leaving there, the sky was just getting a real dirty look to it.
When we had the boat, I got pretty good at reading the weather huh.
I got the ol Caddy shuffling along and home and safe. It was a win that the idiot wasn't home, I would've been in his shed and missed the warning signs.

We just got 25mm from a good little storm just now.
Though looking at the radar it was only on our side of Maleny, not much on the other side of the hills.
The whole area up here did get 120mm+ last Friday, so there should be something in the creek I expect.

Sounds like a win, the issue with booking somewhere like there is that the weather can turn to crap but you have already paid up. If the weather is crap (too blowy) then they might have done you a favour.

Everybody says how Stanthorpe, well, the southern downs, or crap, most of the southern Queensland area in general, has had no rain and is in drought conditions.
We have had only 30mm here, more than the drought effected areas.
I might be wrong, but when the rains come, I can't help but think, it will be in biblical proportion's.
We've had 173mm of rain for the calendar year to date.

After I hung up I chucked the news on to see and bugger me the Sunny Coast is alight. They where saying around 14 houses lost last night.
The wind was horrific down this way all night, I imagine the fires would have moved super fast in these conditions and it would have been a terrible night for everyone up there.
I hope everyone up on the northern end of the coast is ok today.

5ish years ago, there was a news article on Thursday night that Hinze Dam on the GC had hit 17%, & when it hit 16% the next level of water restrictions would cut in, which would include pumping recycled sewerage into the dam :'(. They finished off the article to say we were expecting "showers" that weekend, which would be nice but wouldn't have any real effect.
It absolutely pisted down that weekend ;D, & Monday night they announced that the Dam was now at 67%! :o It overflowed about 2 weeks later ;D

Residents of Forest Ridge, about 110 kilometres south-west of Toowoomba, have been urged to take shelter with a large bushfire potentially posing a threat to "all lives directly in its path".
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services upgraded the fire to "emergency" level after 2pm on Wednesday as the fire approached Cypress Avenue and Wallaby, Koala and Kimberley drives at nearby Cypress Gardens.
But by 3.30pm QFES had advised those in Forest Ridge near Paddys Creek Road and its intersection with Pine Ridge Road it was "too late to leave".

I've booked 40,000 litres of water for my dam to be delivered tomorrow.
I would love to be able to cancel that, but I bet we still need it.
I've switched water to the tanks that overflow into the main dam.
50 to 60mm, and i'm a happy little swagger, tanks will fill and then I have dam inflows plus the rain inflows.
Past reports, say I will still be getting the water dropped tomorrow.
I just did a naked dance/run around the boundary line..... clouds took off the other way. ???

I tend to agree.
Some are saying, we'll get rain in Feb, others are saying April.
So, in other words, no silly kent has a glue when it will rain.
The best we can hope for, is a cyclone Cat 1or 2) to develop, cross the coast south of Mackay/north of Rocky.
Once it becomes a rain depression, it would bring very welcome rain to inland Queensland and down to us and northern NSW.
Will it happen.... fukked if I know.

Went out yesterday and bought two portable Rinnai 3.5kw air conditioners.
Shop price of $799 each, walked out the door at $599 each.
Had one up and running yesterday after the house was locked up all day with a high of 42.
Not as good as a proper unit, but it worked pretty good, all things considered.
Could only fit one unit in the car, so back today for number 2.
Should've been in the Cadillac, could've got both in that at one time.

32.7 * C inside at the moment nearly 70% Humidity .. All the windows doors open .. Its been the same all week / week end ... Friggen hate Brick and tile houses ..

In Gatton yesterday morning, the "outside temp" on the statesman showed 44 at 10:30 am.
Here at home, with it parked in the carport since midday, at 3:15, it showed 49.
I know a place down the road was showing 45 on their verandah, so 49 might be correct.

It would seem, at 60, underwear is a necessity rather than an option. :-[
Haven't checked the gauge yet, but I think we would've got 20 or 25mm last night.
Now that was pretty good rain, but I need more, I need this friggin dam up at least a metre.
I've put in 56,000 litres so far and its still low enough, that evaporation is still a big issue.
The turtles and birdlife always give me a thumbs up though whenever I shell out for water.

Same old dogs getting out. Also how smart do you have to be to know that dogs dont like thunderstorms. I,ve been through half a dozen cyclones and many thunderstorms and never had a dog get out. Always sit with em when storms are around. Missus also Shit scared of thunder. Our local resident forum on farcebook sees dogs roaming everyday of the week. Often repeat offenders. If you cant look after your dog properly...give it to some one who can. Its no wonder many people get pissed off with roaming dogs. We also have recent cassowary, and chicks, sightings and roaming dogs are the last thing we need decimating our wildlife.

Just finished cleaning up the 2 that came down on the boundary and repaired the fence enough to keep the dog in tonight.
Fortunately we had given the chickens away recently, I recon there would have been a few casualties in the pen if they had of been in there.
Will clean up that area tomorrow.

I was sitting in the cube farm at work looking towards the north west from the 20th floor. It was looking pretty ominous but just like that the storm split and missed the CBD completely.

Pete we have had two storms, Monday and yesterday. A few branches down and damage to the chook house and car port / shelter. I thought I was the only one that watched BOM in anticipation of a drop of rain, only to see it fizzle out just down the road.

I had a 120000litre tank with a shed built over the top best $5000 (for the tank) I spent building the house in 1990.

Only issue was I never had a big enough roof to fill the tank until I extended the house, plus 3 car garage and the shed, then it would overflow if a cloud cast a shadow over the property.

I looked at a couple of options from those guys, but once you go away from the standard 5,000 gallons the cost just blows them out too much.
I wanted to use their tanks to help form a bit of a retaining wall, but I could get 3 times the storage with gal tanks for roughly the same price.
Was much cheaper to get my mate over with his excavator to batter the bank I was looking to retain and form a pad for normal tanks while he was here.

Our creek out the back has started flowing for the first time in a long time.
Driving up to Maryborough and back yesterday there was heaps of rain between heading up there early in the morning and coming back after lunch. So much water moving through the paddocks everywhere north of Gympie.

Our ferry stop operating yesterday arvo, river height gauges throughout the Clarence Valley and catchments have risen, with more predicted falls, there will be many road closures.
It's part of living in The Clarence Valley.

That's our place at the tip of the pen. The lagoon is the lower/right portion of the photo, with Atkinson's dam behind us in the top of the photo. That's a SEQ Water channel right beside us that connects the two. TODAY....The gates on the lagoon are open and its running hard, Atkinson's dam is at 70% and will be full this afternoon, but has a natural spill, so can't back onto us. You can see in the photo, the area i call the black forest and when i say, we back onto Atkinson's dam, i mean, we back onto it.

We aren’t getting anywhere near the numbers that are falling closer to the coast. Yesterday was a big one, relatively speaking, with 86mm falling. East and south Nanango have both gone under to some extent, but nothing too severe yet. We live on a hill, so will never be impacted by anything less than Noah proportions😂, thanks for asking🙂

Queensland Police Minister Mark Ryan has described the people behind three reported looting incidents across the state’s south-east as “grubs”.
Commissioner Katarina Carroll told reporters on Tuesday that the three burglary incidents had been reported in flood affected areas Goodna, Bundamba and Blackstone around Ipswich, west of Brisbane.
A man has been arrested and charged over one incident, with investigations into the other two ongoing.
An angered Mr Ryan spoke soon after, saying that police would find those responsible for the actions and put them before the courts.

Yesterday morning we'd had 37mm, then emptied another 89 during the day, 62mm at 9pm last night, then poured out another 149mm at 7 this morning, making 302mm since yesterday morning, or 339mm for 31 hours!!! :o :o :o
& now, after a few hours break, it's raining again ::)
My heart goes out to those people who are still trying to clean up after last month's effort :'(

Looking at the news feeds this morning jclures, and every road up the range is closed (possibly for quite a while too), looks like the tablelands will be isolated for a while? Is that real world, or just media beat up?I think that it will be a few days after the rain stops, probably a day or two longer than the 'old days'. I remember being stuck for 4 days at Smithfield then getting home via the Kuranda Range and Gillies Hwy. To get up the Kuranda Range we had a front end loader clearing a lane, letting a couple of vehicles through while the landslide slowly slumped a bit more, cleared again, rinse and repeat. No way that would be done now, a complete reconstruction would be required. Australia Day 1974, that was one of my more exciting fishing trips. Went up the coast for an afternoon's fishing, got back a week later. In the HR ute, towed across the then causeway at Oak Creek, teamed up with a couple of blokes in an old Telecom swb Inter ute, chainsawed trees, rolled boulders out of the way, head out the window to see as the rain was so heavy, water sloshing on the floor of the cabin. All to no avail as the road was cut (as usual) at Tomatis Creek.

Over 10 years of records, our average for Jan is 199.7mm, with an annual average total of 1478.4.
Last year was overall dry with only 126.8 for Jan.
Yesterday we had 119mm + ~110 since 9am, so we've already smashed the monthly average & are at ~15% of our annual total! :o
So are we in for another wet one, or is it going to go dry after this, as it did last year ???

It's all passed through just a tickle south of us, only 100mm over the last 24h here. 15min down the road around Beaudesert & Canungra have been getting smashed though. Friends near Jimboomba haven't had power since Xmas Eve & Energex are saying it could be another 10 days yet.

Talking to a bloke on another forum who's at Clagiraba (between Nerang & Canungra). They lost power on Christmas Day, & last estimate from Energex is 5 Jan! :o :'(
He's lucky because he's got a gennie which is keeping their fridge & freezer going, but lot's of others are much worse off :'(
Our power went off for 4 hours on 27/12 (so not connected to the storms, so buggered if I know why ???), so the Engel went on to battery & the van fridge on gas, in case we needed them for food, but came good again without needing them ;D

Fair bit of damage up here. The rowing course has been swept away and is tangled up on the rocks and bridge piers.
