Mildura’s Kulkyne Kampers went into voluntary administration on Friday with 13 staff losing their jobs - I feel really sorry for the staff and for the Kulkyne customers who had already paid for stuff but not yet received it.

Not good for all. Must have been too hard keeping up with the big stores. Fingers crossed for all affected.
-
Bosses sound like nice people to work for. No care or respect for the staff that were there to make them money, voluntary administration doesn't happen overnight.
-
Feeling sad and somewhat lucky.
Sad for everyone involved.
Lucky for me as I was days away from ordering a swag online that I may never have received
-
Same as swagmail. ;D
-
website still takes orders... :( That's ****ed.
-
That is fkd!
Betcha they've said to staff " We're going to trade out of it".

I think it can be a bit of a catch 22, if they let the word out that they are really struggling then it can stop potential orders which can kill of a struggling company that was otherwise capable of making it through a rough patch. I have known a few SME's that have gone bust and none of the owners have been left better of than the employees, Most have been reinvesting their funds to keep their business afloat and walk away with absolutely nothing, employees get their entitlements and have a wad of super towards their retirement where as the owners generally have nothing to show for their years of effort and have put in above and beyond what an employee has. I don't know the situation here but I feel sorry for all involved and on the basis of the information posted here don't think vilifying the owners is really warranted. To say the staff were there to make the owners money also seems quite skewed, I'd be pretty sure they went to work to earn money. Not good for anyone involved.
-
Of course the employees went there to make money, that's obvious to all but I'm positive the owners didn't have them there to loose money.
As for the owners loosing more than the employees, if they are silly enough to have their personal assets unprotected they really should think twice about running a business.
The reason this irks me with the employees being left in the dark, just imagine if you had been saving for a house deposit for the last 10 years and yesterday you put that deposit down on a new house that you now have no way of paying and loose the lot.
27 years ago I was working for a small building company and I was going to buy a new/used car. The car was bought to my work for me to look at. My boss asked me if I was going to buy it, told him I was going after work to sign the finance papers, he said there's no need to rush into it and take a couple days to think about it. After work he asks me again about the car and I told him I'm on my way to sign for it. He then says he can get in a lot of trouble for what he's about to tell me but the administrators will be here in the morning. He saved me from an $18k contract that I wouldnt be able to service. That's how you treat employees.

That is Sad for the workers.
Often looked at their website and called in at the shop while in Mildura last year looking for something.
Hope the next story we read isn't that there is no money to meet their entitlements and their superannuation has not been paid, something which is all to common in business failures these days.

Not any more, entitlements are guaranteed by the govt

Not everything
Note—unpaid Superannuation Guarantee Contributions cannot be claimed—these should be pursued through the Australian Taxation Office

Makes you wonder if they put too much into their drifters creek campers which I assume are Chinese imports? Maybe should have stuck to the other items they sold sucks either way with people loosing their jobs etc.

I'm sure that wasn't the initial plan however they obviously kept them there whilst they were.

I know of a builder who sold all they had to prop up the business, knew if they couldn't turn it around they wouldn't be comfortable keeping everything knowing that others could/would loose theirs, yet still copped it on-line from people thinking they were sailing away into the sunset. I guess the line between integrity and silly varies on perception.
That's how you treat employees.
Yep was the decent thing to do, I think many would do the same in a similar situation though. There is however good reasons as your boss at the time alluded to that generally they don't.

No that's receivership.
No better time to buy as any purchase is now granateed by the administrator. Thought you'd all know that seeing everybody seems to be an expert on who will get what and who Won't?
Additionally those who used credit cards for purchases not recieved need to see there bank.
-
Tuff stuff allround.

Came across their gear often when sourcing items on the internet, but was never tempted to purchase from them on account of the pricing. Anyway it seems that they may have been struggling for a while .......

Have been a happy customer for the last 5 years. Sad to see another small business go down like this.

I have purchased a single pole touring tent and never had a problem with purchase or delivery.
Seems company has gone tits up.
-
As well as other small stuff I purchased my Oztent RV set up through these guys a few years back when they were on the main road through Red Cliffs, I took a road trip from Melbourne for the simple fact that I got a RV 3 with side walls and deluxe front (so I have two rooms) for less than what Oztent were selling just the tent for, I couldn't understand how they could beat the manufacturer on price by that much, I also used their website sale to get my Waeco CFX 50 for less than $1000 with bag and stand from Anaconda on their price match.

The administrators would have sold everything they could including the web domain, I'd say Drifter's Creek bought it to hopefully get more internet traffic.

From the 'about us' section of their website
Drifters Creek started life as a brand of Kulkyne Kampers. In 2012 Drifters Creek became its own company set up to supply the Kulkyne Kampers and Drifters Creek brands to independent camping stores Australia wide.
Our aim is to design, develop and manufacture the highest quality camping products and deliver them to the end customer at great prices.
Since 2012 we have been busy setting up an independent camping store in each region of Australia so that you can go in and see our products and know you're purchase will be well supported by your friendly local camping store.

they might want to update their FAQ page then...
http://www.drifterscreek.com.au/page/faqs/ (http://www.drifterscreek.com.au/page/faqs/)
"What if there isn't a dealer in my Area?
Until such time as we set up a dealer in your area, you can always buy online from Kulkyne Kampers at www.kulkyne.com (http://www.kulkyne.com) and have our range of camping products delivered to your door anywhere in Australia. "

Got my first email tonight from drifters creek spruking the sale of Kulkyne swags. Now I have never registered with this company but did get the emails from the old Kulkyne company, so guess that how they got my email address.
Their website looks n smells like Kulkyne and this statement can be found on their web page
"Who is Drifters Creek"
"Drifters Creek is a majority owned subsidiary of Kulkyne Kampers. It has been set up to offer the range of Drifters Creek and Kulkyne Kampers branded products through out Australia through independently owned local camping stores."

I've just been through this ordeal and this isn't correct.
You don't get 100% of your entitlements, and the process takes almost 12 months.
