Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- And maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death,
-by his parents, Truth and Trust,
-by his wife, Discretion,
-by his daughter, Responsibility,
-and by his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers;
- I Know My Rights
- I Want It Now
- Someone Else Is To Blame
- I'm A Victim
- Pay me for Doing Nothing
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
If you still remember him, pass this on.
If not, join the majority and do nothing :worthles:

Sady - common sence is not that common these days...
It is on the endangered species list; didn't you know?

Common sense, is, and always has been, a fallacy. It is a delusion created by the uniformed to justify their prejudices.
The lamenting of what was supposedly common sense is actually more of an ode to the loss of personal accountability, which is a legacy left by a few continuously progressive generations.

Is that just policemen, or everyone in uniform ??.......................... ;D ;D ;D

your about 25 years too late.

Do a risk assessment first and then common sense is not needed because it looks good on paper rather than thinking.......chit, that is gunna hurt if I do that! >:D Corkheads! ::)

It should be called uncommon sense.
If it was common, then everyone should have it.

I'm afraid this is 100% correct. It is the common sense mantra that made up my mind to leave the safety industry. I got sick of sitting in the homes of the loudest chanters of the "common sense" myth trying to figure how they will manage their normal day to day lives now that their "common sense" had left them for a moment and they were injured enough to change their lives either for a short duration or for the rest of their days.
Generally an investigation of what went wrong showed that they made a poor choice at a given moment in time. (I'm not saying this in 100% of cases but up around 80% mark)
I consider myself to be reasonably sensible person (probably plenty who would argue otherwise) but I know I have done things that later when I think of all the choices I had I do not have valid reason for, "why the hell did I do that" and wondered that maybe I don't have common sense ;D
I've always questioned the definition of common sense & I suggest that it is a learned value not an inherited one. For example what would be common sense to a brain surgeon during an operation would not be to an electrician and visa versa.
I don't aim to offend nor have I ever tried to tell someone how to their job unless it was within my sphere of knowledge & they asked for my opinion and no I wasn't university educated. (Struggled to get through grade 10)
Sorry this should be its own rant thread.

This is exactly the reason why the concept of 'common sense' is just misguided nostalgia with a smattering of hyperbole. What you know is based on your life experience, it is unreasonable for others to assume that you know as much as they do about any particular topic. There are instincts of course, but considering in what context of people claim 'common sense' I think it can be safely excluded from that classification.
-
Some learned definitions form leading dictionaries;
1. The definition of common sense refers to having sound judgment, not necessarily based on specialized knowledge.
2. Simple Definition of common sense: the ability to think and behave in a reasonable way and to make good decisions.
3. Good sense and sound judgement in practical matters.
4. the ability to use good judgment and make sensible decisions.

Seems to be lots of similar definitions online for something that doesn't exist.
But of course we all know you can't trust what you read online.

There are also definitions for fairies and unicorns. Does not mean that they exist.
-
That is the most eleqient and truthful prose I have heard in a long while. Well said vicandug. I couldn't agree more. :cup:
-
I have no problems with those definitions unfortunately the words common sense are generally not used in that context.
To often I saw people who were injured & were blamed for not having common sense where as what they were missing was common knowledge & fellow workers, supervisors etc used the common sense angle to mitigate their failures to make sure people had the knowledge to do their work. Trust me the courts aren't interested in the term.
However as I now am employed to do my hobbies I don't know why I am sitting here instead of watching the cricket or tinkering in the shed.
Whatever floats your boat take care & stay safe if not for your own sake then for those that will be touched if you don't.
PS RIP Common Sense whatever the hell it means to you.

I think you might find the word mythical used in acceptable definitions for those two entities.
Does that mean they exist?
NO, however many in mind altered states have reportedly had encounters with them.

You don't have to go into mind altered states, just go into the wrong pub and you'll meet some of them.... well maybe not the unicorns...

The new and powerful player on the block is "Political Correctness"
You are continually assailed by this insidious and unforgiving mongrel.
Dare to speak your mind, question a woman's rights or abilities (even logical strength questions) at your own demise.
Never mention race, colour, sex, sexuality or beliefs.
Any deviation from the accepted demasculated male role model is punished severly and never, ever open a door for a woman.
And women dont have it all either, gone are the days of gossip, legal and sever punishment is the result.
Daring to be a woman and relishing your femininity is forbidden, you must be a pseudo male to survive.
Decrying the feminatzi is the most sever crime that can be committed, and your punishment is all and forever.
Finally, race and religion.
Two separate, but for those wishing to profit from the amalgamation, related conditions.
Its OK to poke fun at Christians as we are the ones who have no say or teeth.
But some religions cannot be questioned, or even degenerated with the disregard given to Christians.
Yes political Correctness has us all under his thumb.
We dare not stray, we dare not deviate.
This will be the downfall of our culture, our way of life, what life is left after all the continual criticism and punishment.
This is our world..............live it in fear.

Oh dear, time for your pills ::)

Maybe the passing of common sense allowed the rise of political correctness

And some of us have been lucky enough to survive and still be here today.....(myself included).......

The new and powerful player on the block is "Political Correctness"
You are continually assailed by this insidious and unforgiving mongrel.
It's called fairness and equality for everyone.
Dare to speak your mind, question a woman's rights or abilities (even logical strength questions) at your own demise.
If it's done in an insulting and bullying manner, then siad demise is justified.
Never mention race, colour, sex, sexuality or beliefs.
Again, if it is done in an insulting or bullying manner (which is usually the case), you're right, don't do it.
Any deviation from the accepted demasculated male role model is punished severly and never, ever open a door for a woman.
The word is "emasculated", and is usually bandied about when someone stands up to the bullying tactics of said male.
And women dont have it all either, gone are the days of gossip, legal and sever punishment is the result.
Which is what should happen in cases of slander or defamation.
Daring to be a woman and relishing your femininity is forbidden, you must be a pseudo male to survive.
Decrying the feminatzi is the most sever crime that can be committed, and your punishment is all and forever.
If you feel you aren't being allowed to show your feminine side, stand up for yourself, I'm sure most here would support you.
(but we don't need to see pictures OK) :-[
Finally, race and religion.
Two separate, but for those wishing to profit from the amalgamation, related conditions.
Its OK to poke fun at Christians as we are the ones who have no say or teeth.
It's not OK to denigrate any religion. It's called bigotry. You may not agree with followers of other religions, but they have the right to follow their own beliefs as long as it is not to the detriment of others beliefs or well being.
But some religions cannot be questioned, or even degenerated with the disregard given to Christians.
I don't know what this sentence means. ???
Yes political Correctness has us all under his thumb.
We dare not stray, we dare not deviate.
This will be the downfall of our culture, our way of life, what life is left after all the continual criticism and punishment.
If your "culture" is being a bigoted, sexist, racist bully, then yes it is the "downfall of your culture"
This is our world..............live it in fear.
There doesn't seem to be an "eyes rolling" emoticon ???
-
The new and powerful player on the block is "Political Correctness"
never, ever open a door for a woman.
Was told a story of this but not sure how fair dinkum it is, however at a posh function male opened door for female who said she is ascapable as any man and can open her own doors (or words to that effect) then spat on the bloke. His response, this is what I would do to any man that spat on me & knocked her on her rrrs. :cup:

On the contrary, thank you for demonstrating mine.

:)
Incidentally, I never use the old "Political Correctness" call, to resolve any conflicts of that nature perpetrated upon myself, I have no problem with resolving issues by using physical violence ;D
But for many others, that is their only way to resolve an issue, because bullies only target someone they see as weaker or more timid than themselves.

Thanks for this well written post....
Christains and belief systems.... Dare a Christian speak his/her mind and say they believe a marriage is a union decreed by the creator of the universe - between a man and a woman. ... not between 2 homosexuals...
Dare the Christian say they believe that that union should be the mechanism to create a child....
That a child not be brought into this world as a "lifestyle accessory" to be (potentially) loved by 2 homosexuals - whom cannot otherwise obtain a child... by defacto thus making that a selfish thing for them to want/have..
O' no - the person with that particular belief system (Christian) - gets condemned immediately as a narrow minded bigot....
On a slightly different topic - I would love to see the ABC allow a comedy series lampooning Muslims (French satirical newspaper style).... for all to see just how deadly the religious bigoted wolves whom roam amongst us really are....
The explosive backlash would make the Lindt Cafe look like an Australia picnic in the park..
Come on all you social leftie political corrective types ("don't mention the war" - save you may offend someone LOL).... why don't you put THAT type of comedy on the telly....
Yes, we know why......

That used to be the norm years ago, but most work places don't condone that stuff anymore. If you don't mind looking for another job, you can still try it, but I haven't seen a good old punch up at work for 10 yrs or more !!
-
.. Thanks for the link, troopy...
Charliehebdo is a somewhat complex, twisted child I would suspect...
But when well they be publishing a cartoon of mockery on themselves?
I don't know - the cartoon could go something like depicting the Earth as seen from space - but seen as a charred smoldering wreck... From space the viewer sees a spacecraft with some 'loony goons' at the helm; looking on in slight horror...
On the side of the spacecraft an image of the Eiffel Tower broken in 2 - and a caption saying "Charliehebdo Directors"
Explanation:
The ruined smoldering Earth represents our planet's demise because of its ruination from the ultra cynical; leftist pseudo intellectualists... Where their self-perceived whit sees them stand for nothing - holding everything they see as beneath them with equal contempt...
The Eiffel Tower snapped in 2 - is like you would see a USA flag on a spacecraft - but in this case its symbolic of the brokenness of the very cradle of equality and idealism AND a powerful belief system seen and true and pure -- (The French Revelation) (which hatched democracy in the USA, etc); as lost and broken - because of the disease outlined in the preceding paragraph..
The sign on the side of the spacecraft "Charliehebdo Directors" is intended to leave the reader with no doubt as to what caused it...
AKA -
"Stand for nothing"; (equally universally condemning of all of humanity);
"And you WILL fall for anything..."
-

Was sent this the other day, sorry about the capitals,
the true meaning of political correctness
"POLITICAL CORRECTNESS IS A DOCTRINE, RECENTLY FOSTERED BY A DELUSIONAL, ILLOGICAL MINORITY AND PROMOTED BY A SICK MAINSTREAM MEDIA WHICH HOLDS FORTH THE PROPOSITION THAT IT IS ENTIRELY POSSIBLE TO PICK UP A PIECE OF Shit BY THE CLEAN END"

the final objectives of political correctness advocates is;
That the whole human population, by appearance or actions, will appear as if of the the one sex.
That human interaction on any physical level is abandoned.
That human emotion, joy, laughter and enjoyment is banned.
That confrontation, regardless of legitimacy, is banned.
That individuality and all that which makes us different is illegal.
There is a perfect example of a species that fulfils these ideal perfectly.
The ants, all appear as if identical and all work purely for the nest.
Enjoyment does not exist, nor does individuality or rest.
If this is what the political correctness advocates want, then I will oppose them to my death.
I am a man and proud of it.
I tell jokes because they are funny and laugh loud.
I am masculine and happy to protect myself and my family as a man would.
My wife is feminine and happy to be feminine.
She is also a strong willed woman who stands up fer her rights and I would have it no other way.
Its a manhole cover....not an access cover.
Mary had Black sheep, not rainbow sheep....that's just stupid.
I will complement a woman who is pretty, its a complement, not an insult moron.
Ill say thank you "Love" to a woman and open doors for them and even give them my seat.
I have no problem with an older lady saying "Thank you dearie to me.
I will protect a woman or child in danger, as any real man would.
Equality does not require political correctness to be functional.
Respect everyone regardless of their sex, race or personal preferences......but also respect mine, its a two way street.
I will stand up for myself against sexless, twisted clones who see themselves worthless as an individual.
Enjoy who you are, rejoice that we are all different, it would be a bloody boring world if we are all exactly the same.

So I take it that I should de-sexualise myself and become mono-sexual with no emphasis on the male or female roles?
Where will this leave those who enjoy diversity and true erotica?
I should extend myself to the limits of human misery to ensure that I never, intentionally or unintentionally, to never offend anyone ever.
This is practically and totally impossible.
As far as you can go to eliminate any offence, someone will always be there to take offence at something or anything.
An example was at one conference I once attended when several women stated that a man in a beard was offensive to them because it was a demonstration of a woman's inability to grow a beard.
Yes this absurdity is true and I was at a total loss as to what to say.
And what about a true Christians offence at what they would consider offensive.
Open homosexuality, using the lords name in vain or even inappropriate clothing.
Of course it would be OK for this if one was of a certain religious bent, but Christianity is open slather.
Now I have friends who are of some unusual sexual and religious leanings, but as we all breath the same air, this is of no consequence to me. But even they feel threatened by the ever expanding wave of political correctness.
It is my friends and their like that political correctness was initially imposed, to allow them to live their chosen lives in peace.
But as we morph more and more into sameness, any deviation from the norm will soon become unacceptable and this political correctness monster will devour their individuality and create and even less tolerant society than we currently have.

Rather say, Beauty Challenged.
Thats the correct way to say it isnt it?
Mary had a little Lamb
NOPE, NO GOOD
An individual, belonging to a community group so as to not favor ownership issues had a small animal (because Lambs offend vegetarians)
BETTER
Its Fleece as white as snow
NOPE,
Its coloration the same as all the other animals, so as to not promote differences or favoritism.
BETTER
And everywhere that Mary went.
The lamb was sure to go.
NOPE,
And everywhere that the individual went. (We cannot mention either sex)
The small animal belonging to a community group followed, but not through coercion of any need other than it wanted to.
BETTER
This is the future of our education people.
