I was listening to a talkback show on the radio early this morning and they were discussing what sort of cars the cops would get once Holden and Ford closed their factories.
Some were saying Pontiacs some said Chryslers.
It'll be interesting to see what we get ???
-
Here on the coast there is heaps of toyotas already. I reckon that way, but what about the highway guys? They would need a bit more get up I reckon. Will be interesting to see
-
I hope they dont use GM or Ford, govt should boycott the bastards for pulling out
-
They've all pulled out at some point......
-
Plenty of manufacturers to choose from.
Just saw on ABC they maybe keeping the SA holden plant going
-
They had to pull out. Other wise they would have had a shed full of staff, with no money to pay them. It's all our fault for buying toyotas, nissans, hyundias etc.
I wonder down at the local ford and Gm plants, how many ford and gms are parked in the staff car park??
Go to Lithgow at the moment. 1 whole power station closed. The life and blood of that area, from staff that worked there to the coal mine across the rd that feed it. Then go for a drive around town and look at every single miners are station workers roof. Covered in solar. I guess with all the solar feeding the grid, they are able to save money and close a power station??
And it's just to god dam expensive to manufacture in Australia.
But yeah I think the govt has done enough of supporting Gm and ford through money to keep the plants going. Let a dead dog die!!

Bang on ole mate it's all too common

Merc, Audi & BMW all have LE spec vehicles and are pitching for the contracts. I assume the new strategy will be to buy an LE spec vehicle rather than having to design and build it locally.
-
Are the yanks using Holdens over there for their pursuit cars?
-
Mustang V8 cop cars?
There's plenty of cars out there for general duties and for the highway guys there are plenty fast big cars if that's what they need. BMW 5 series, Audi S3. Volvo do some very quick cars V60/S60/80.
Mercedes/Audi/BMW/Volvo and Chrysler are all submitting proposals. The reality is there aren't that many high speed chases that need big v8's anymore. The Volvo S60 T6 tops out at 260km/h (2km/h faster than an SS) and with similar 0-100 times
-
Fuji in a Volvo, I'd like to see that :)
-
Maybe these, Capable of a top speed of 407kph, the 16-cylinder Veyron boasts 1,200 horsepower, allowing it to reach 100kph in 2.5 seconds.
-
Considering that Queensland has a no pursuit policy, any vehicle will be acceptable. Most of the general duties vehicles are being swapped over to Hyundai vans, seats 5 plus a prisoner pod in the back.

Just put a green P plate on whatever it is; they're the fastest bloody cars I've ever seen. Except on freeways and highways, so perfect.
-

No not really. I don't think everyday Australians should be made to shoulder any kind of guilt or fault for the demise of our car industry. If anything, the car industry should be thanking us for propping them up as long as we did. These are profit-driven billion-dollar companies, not helpless victims.
The reasons why they failed are well understood and well discussed, so i won't go into them. But at no point will i feel any kind of guilt or accept any kind of fault when they finally close shop. If they wanted to stay in business they should have produced vehicles that were better aligned to what Australian buyers wanted. Doing so would have been reflected in growing sales in the ever expanding new car market. Its what the toyotas, nissans, hyundias etc did and they all bigger than ever.
-
Hmm, I tend to agree with old mate. Aussies fell for the bs about fuel economy and stopped buying cars made in Australia for Australia and Australians. We have an FG Falcon G6, and it is so good, especially for what it cost. Of course the joke is on us, because Ford themselves wouldn't back it up on resale.

Yes, the Statesman. Have been importing Holdens for about 10 years I think ???

The ACT Police arm of the AFP were trialling the V8 Volvos at one point.
-
The replacement 4wd's need a bit of thought too. The 200 just got scrapped from Vicpol with the new upgrade due to front end weight, hopefully this is rectified soon. Not sure if the Territory's will be replaced with an Everest or a US model that was spotted being tested in Melbourne last week. Couldn't see the Mustang, Merc or Beamer getting up Billy Goats or into Wonnangatta too often....although it is surprising where a police car will go. ;D

Looks similar to the Chevrolet SS Sportwagon, that never was.......
-
I reckon the Chevy considering they have very similar models already. http://www.chevrolet.com/ss-sports-sedan.html (http://www.chevrolet.com/ss-sports-sedan.html)
Considering Ford are bringing in sweet fa mustangs in I doubt the cops will want them.

Whether the above Commodore or the previous wagon now used in the states, that will all finish the same time as our Commodores finish.
The yanks use a fair few Mustangs from hwy patrol to general duties, so seems a logical choice. Knowing govt departments, It'll be whichever manufacturer they can screw down the most.

I was of the belief that Holdens were rebadged as PONTIAC's.
I'm sure there's many photo's of Monaro's with the divided grille area adorned with a Pontiac badge.
Statesman with Chev. badge went to UAE for the Arabs as well.
A bit of a lottery with GM at the moment.
Highway cars Have usually been 4 door models in Vic.

and don't we know it, kingbilly. It takes your neighbours to clean up your mess. lol

They need to be 4 door so they can transport crims without having to wait around for a van that can.
The cars are usually turned over every 3 years so if they get the last batch the new cars aren't going to be needed until 2020.
-
I remember a few years ago, Volvo gave the ACT cops a souped up Volvo sports car.
They totalled it within a week.
Guess fanging around a sports car is too difficult for the intellectually challenged

Don't be rude as it may be used in evidence against you in the future , long memories :police:

They certainly have been rebadged as Pontiacs AND Chevs, but once we stop making them, like us, the yanks will source some of their cop cars from within.
Unlike us, the yanks have a few big cars to choose from still, but surprisingly, they are downsizing as well, and big cars are getting scarce over there as well. Not in pickups though !!

Ford US are apparently bringing back the Crown Victoria this year, after a 5 year break.
For those that don’t know. The Crown Victoria is a full size, 4 door, RWD, V8 (&6cyl) sedan. Pretty much built specifically for the police and taxi industry.

Eh ?? ???

Well if they rebadged anything decent i was sure id be made aware...
Ever since the gemini witch was pommy rubbish to the astra holden got whatvthey deserved as far as im concernened.
Keep in mind this is coming from a guy in his late teens that paid 4 grand for an HQ and pulled the subframe out and replaced it with a ground up rebuilt hz statesman front end and disc brake rear.
I love old holdens but have no alegence based on brand alone

If we get the Chevy's, does that mean all the tossers will fit a Holden badge to it.

These are the three options being considered.
Urban Patrol ;D
Rural Patrol ;D
Lawn Patrol ;D
(Look out Jeepers)
-
Somebody has to produce a car for Law enforcement that fills their requirements . lt must be able to fly on & off the road ,do tricks while in the air & travel with the beacons flashing over huge distances them crash . lv seen the Blues Brothers >:D

They already do, the Cruze. 8)

No chevys to get....the yanks are a bit like us now, most of their chevys are imported. Their local car business is going down the gurglar as well. If they didn't like pickups, which they sell a *hitload of, they'd be in all sorts of trouble.
The Cruze with a chevy badge just doesn't look right though ?
-
Suburu WRX😧😧 I've seen a few unmarked ones up this way lately ;D
-
An old Vicpol Hummer from about 6-8 years ago.....
-
.....not quite the Mini Cooper of NSWpol fame.....
-
I would be surprised if they don't go with the cheapest option, no matter what it is. I know the cops in NSW have been told to spend as much time on the side of the road as possible to reduce fuel costs due to the State's poor financial position.

They certainly will.....IF they can find something to replace the Falcoons and Commodes.
European stuff is too dear, and can't compete with the old Aussie performance, so for hwy patrol, the Stang looks likely. But they want/need a 4 door, so who knows ??
They also want a country wide "standard" car for everything, and NSW was the only state to have performance cars with upgraded brakes, so we might get downgraded to come in line with other states. Victoria are using poxy Camrys for hwy patrol ??
2018 will be the year to be a crook......you'll only need a souped up Toyota Camry to outrun them !! ;D
-
We've seen the last of the V8 interceptors
There's a difference to the requirements for responding to an incident vs pursuing someone. There's many 4 door cars that could do the job around town once you get rid of that pursuit requirement. 90% of Australians live in urban areas. Having a car capable of 220km/h isn't really a requirement if they're not chasing anyone on a long open country road or a freeway, and most chases are in the suburbs or built up areas - You don't need a big V8 to chase someone down Oxford Street or through Manly.
There's talk of banning high speed pursuits in NSW currently because of the fatalities and they consider the risks too high. Tasmania banned all pursuits except those relating to serious crime in 1999. Queensland did the same in 2012. Vic Police changed the rules in 2015 (cannot pursue a vehicle for offences such as theft or minor traffic offences). So they just don't need the big high powered cars any more.
-

The cops disagree. It's not only pursuits they need power for, it's response times as well. Many a time the hwy patrol is the 1st on a scene, and the beefed up brakes eliminates brake fade, so safety of officers and the public is better as well.
This info is from an article with police input, so not my opinion only !
A vehicle doing 200 k/ph wouldn't be a minor traffic offence, so there is always a need for powerful hwy patrol cars.
-
Give 'em a Chrysler 300C to use.
Go like stink, handle like a greasy pig on wet linoleum floor... 8)
Even our Jeep could out handle one of them, just make sure ya get chased on a good mountain road.
-
Give 'em a Chrysler 300C to use.
That was one under consideration.. Don't go as well or handle as well as the pursuit Falcons etc, and dearer....but cheaper than anything from Europe...who knows ??
Another one on the list was a Golf R...awd and plenty of go....but small ?

Holden Apollo - SV21 Camry
Holden Rodeo - Isuzu now called dmax, not sure what it was called before
Holden Jackaroo - Isuzu Trooper
-
I vote for the Hyundi Getz or perhaps the Cherry.
After all, they dont need to chase people until they crash do they?
Every police chase always gets called off 10 seconds before the pursued vehicle crashes.......yeah right
-

Used to be Chevy Luv.
A mate had one and everyone used to lose their mind over it, cause it had a factory Chev badge.
78 mdl with a 1.8 Gemini petrol, 4 on the tree and drum brakes. Absolute snot box, but had a line of buyers when he sold it...

Don't knock the camel jockeys mate, they kicked off the transport industry in this country.

That's right Champin, he's obviously not heard of The GHAN.
