Title: Mattress toppers
Post by: edz on December 15, 2015, 11:43:28 PM
Ok Ohh learned ones ! a question for you if you please , these mattress topper thingies, are they fairly light weight ? Thinking of using one or maybe two of them straight on top of the 10mm foam covered bed bases of my new camper build [ instead of a regular 100mm foam type mattress ] there would be two for our bed and one for the daughters [ 8yro ].
My thoughts were that even using two of them together it would be :  A : A fair  bit cheaper than the foam mattress, B: Should be more comfortable and breath better  + be a lot lighter ? .
Those that use them what do you reckon, use with mattress [ was thinking of self inflating types if we had to  ] or just use one as its enough on its own  or go the doubled up version without mattress ???
Please's and thank you's in advance

There are a massive variety of mattress toppers in the market. Ranging from light weight to stupidly heavy.
Pricing and thickness would also go from one extreme to the other.
Like anything. The more you pay, the better you get.
I would try to look at it from a comfort and convenience perspective.
I wouldn't want the extra job of inflating/deflating a self inflating mattress each trip.
Comfort is a perception thing.. Some people like a firm mattress, some prefer a soft.  There is good odds you will already know what you like to sleep on at home.
If you're building your own camper, you can get what you like first time ratter than "the mattress that came with the camper".
Then you might not need a topper?
But if you do decide to go thin toppers as the mattress . You may struggle with comfort - to stop you feeling the floor on a thin foam "topper" or mattress would require it to be pretty firm. Or a few of them stacked.
Especially for adults.
I would just get myself a comfortable mattress to start with.
Our camper has a thin innerspring ( came with camper) and an eggshell topper. It's good.
Last camper was a foam mattress and a latex and memory foam topper. It was great. The topper weighed more than the mattress.
Breathing/ comfort has more to do with the quality/density of foam/ quality of material rather than thickness.
Hope that helps a bit.

Cheers

As Fathom has said above. Based on experience (read "lots of money wasted") a topper won't fix a bad mattress. Same as bedroom mattresses, "pillow tops" are often used by manufacturers to make a cheap mattress look and feel luxurious. A custom made innerspring will be a better investment.

I purchased a queen mattress from Ikea ($100) and put that in our Camper. I could feel a spring or two so I bought a mattress topper from Harris Scarfes. I sleep better in my camper that I do at home now.

Our camper came with a foam mattress that was average to say the least, we fitted a topper for $300 to $400 from memory and it's brilliant  :cup: . The topped is made up of ''tubes'' of foam that run across the mattress  ( from left to right so to speak ). Best money we've spent, it's better to sleep on than our home mattress ! Bought it from the local mattress shop !

the "half an 80 series" trailer had/has an el-cheapo foam mattress. Around 6" thick. It was.. as "comfortable" as you'd expect.

I went to Ikea and picked up a nice memory foam topper. It was 3" thick itself.

in two words... "pure bliss".

1000 GSM Mattess toppers are brilliant as I discovered a few years ago on our CT. I recommended them on the forum and quite a few members have purchased and given the thumbs up.
Much much better than the eggshell foam overlay.

Edz biggest problem is that he likes a reasonably firm mattress while I (aka Mrs Edz) prefers a softer mattress. We did have a self-inflating mattress once but I was unable to sleep on it at all. Therefore comfort is most important. Would prefer to not spend too much but it is nice to know what others use before we go shopping.

Two single bed mattresses of different density side by side with a shared topper?  Or individual toppers?  Use a bit of Velcro if necessary to dissuade them from going their separate ways.

I personally hate the 'line' on a joined innerspring like those hotel 'king' beds that are two singles together. But it probably would be less of an issue with a shared topper.

Oh, and we have a basic foam mattress with eggshell topper in the camper, which is heaps better than the innerspring in the van a tie with innerspring plus Aldi padded quilt type topper at home.

Great idea, we have one we never use but it might just make the camper mattress more comfy and negate buying a new one yet.

Very similar to me. I bought a Swan Outback last year and we could feel the springs in the queen size mattress. Wife bought a egg-shell foam topper from Clark's rubber cut to size. Its now the best sleeping mattress we have.

Very light too, and not thick.

We dropped into Clarke Rubber on the weekend....looked at egg shell but went with memory foam.....improved the existing mattress by 10 fold. Only slept on it for one night so far.

I got a 80mm topper and it made it harder to pack the camper up do to the extra size. Went from the camper to the home bed. I loved it, wife hated it, guess who won. Change the mattress in the camper to a multi foam matress, haven't worked out if we like it yet.
