Title: Recommendations for chainsaw bar oil
Post by: McGirr on October 22, 2015, 08:15:15 PM

Purchased the new Stihl ms211 chainsaw and got everything except bar chain oil. Being in the middle of the desert we don't have any oil here. Some one said motor oil but unsure. Any recommendations.

Any oil will work at a push, probably the heaviest engine oil you can scrounge up

Be aware that sthil did make a change to the viscosity of their bar oil a year or so back, if it is a new saw i would just check first as the heavier weight oil may create issues .

as a rule i use the same amount of bar oil to fuel roughly ..so 1 tank of fuel will be close to 1 tank of bar oil in my saw (not sthil)

Jet ;D

x2 however I wound up my oiler so when you cut crap wood like wattle the chain doesn't get as hot

Any chain and bar oil will do if you can't get the heavy Stihl oil. The lighter oil isn't that good for hardwoods.  Engine oil will wreck your chain and bar as it will not stick and penetrate the links.  Cutting hardwoods turn the oiler up if you can so you use a tank of oil to a tank of fuel.   This is applicable to all saws. We sell St IHL at work.

Don't the bits metal and sludge block up the chain?

You forget, Mark runs a Toyota. No problems in his engine oil.

I have used Stihl bar oil all of my saws life and have had no problem, they have changed the viscosity in the past though and its a bit thinner now.
