Title: Showroom stock advice
Post by: evolution on September 02, 2015, 09:34:01 PM
Ok guys,
What sort of accessories (stock wise) would you want to see in a camper showroom?
We already have quite a few things that are lined up. However we don't want to compete with places like rays or bcf.
Ideas I'm hoping to get a things that you don't really find at those places and or things that when you purchase a camper would be handy straight away.
Main reason for asking is that with everything going on I am sure I have missed something...
(especially considering I just found the wheel chocks!)

Any serious suggestions would be fantastic,  as we are very near to purchasing showroom stock.

Cheers
Nick

Some neat cooking gear for stove and fire would be good. Something like an Ozpig maybe or folding portable fire pits...Good luck with the business. Pity you are so far away...or maybe mail order?

Cheers!

See if you can set yourself up as distributors for things like:

Led Lighting options (e.g. Korr lighting).
Hitch options DO35, McHitch, OzHitch.
Canvas reproofing and care products.
12 gear like Baintech/Narva gauges, plugs/outlets.
BBQ's (Weber/Beefeater/Steigler etc) and cookers Lido Junior.
Anything from Outdoor Connection camping gear.
Double Bunks riveted except for the legs so they fold flat on the bed when not in use and easy as to flip over & place legs in when using.
Quality Tie down straps with rubber outer protection.
Solar panels/regulators/Battery Management.
Brake controllers Redarc, Tekonsha, Hayman Reece and a relationship with a local Auto lecky.
Camper covers for those people who don't have a garage or shed for storage.
Locking systems to minimise theft - maybe even GPS tracking devices.
Puncture kits.
Jerry cans.
Water conditioners for clean tanks.
Annex flooring.

There you go - I'm done !   Just spent your capital budget in one go !!

The stuff people actually use would be a good start.

Chocks and levels, spirit levels, power cords and amphibians, gas bottle stuff, peg removers, heavy duty pegs, those surprisingly useful little knobs that go on top of poles to keep them in place, extra poles, annex matting, those little folding stools/steps, BEST water filters, and some water connections bits and pieces, hose bags, plastic drawers/boxes that fit perfectly in your brand of camper, cgear matting or tarps for under the camper.

Leave the chairs and tables to Rays etc as they take up too much space in the showroom and too many $ invested. Tell people who has the best prices locally, and you'll appear more honest.

What market are you aiming at eg local or internet based. What is your catchment area, what competition have you got in your area, what deals can you get from suppliers, nothing worse than having stock that just sits there. Start small and find your niche market. Call them after 6 months , 12 months and see how things are going with their purchase. Very few companies do this. Do they need the bearings done, ask for pics from their trips to put on the website. Sell the service and your business will grow. Get testimonials from buyers.

What turnover in campers are you expecting and what extras can you add on. Do you think your buyers will be upgrading from other campers as they may already have the camping equipment.

When we were selling Trackabout campers and hiring them in Cairns we sold plenty of Mats that we used as ground covers.  We were the dearest camper hire company in Cairns but we were getting so much business from the service we gave. We stayed away from a lot of other gear as we could not compete on price. Maybe think of adding extras to the campers such as wiring extra 12 volt plugs, carpet to areas etc that you can make money on. Buy some 12volt lights and sell them as extras. You don't need brand names as most products come from the same companies in China.

Just ideas to think about.

Good suggestions there.
In addition.
Automotive wire by the meter, the good stuff. Have a Display chart of sorts explaining the sizing and how to figure out the size you need.
Electrical accessories that would go with Campers needs.

Offer to crimp the cable ends on for the larger size stuff, keep your self a good hydraulic crimper secure for your use, most back yard guys would try to solder so explain about being brittle if soldered. Even heat shrink insulation on to the ends as well?

That seems like a pretty good list to me.
Maybe a few commonly replaced trailer spares.
You could strategicly place torches or something similar you can make a decent quid on for spontainious buys;after all you are there to make money.
Have you thought about doing a deal with a decent fishing kayak or bike company to have a small display and you make a margin off any sales you send there way

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys!  :cup:
Some things mentioned I'm already on top of, however there were quite a few that I hadn't even thought of.

Hopefully by the end of next week I'll have some more information for you all. But I have already made some calls for some of those products.
Our accessories art of our showroom isn't massive but it will definitely be full!

Keep them coming though guys, I'm sure there is more, if anyone knows where to get swannies from can you let me know? No one seems to stock them  >:D

Cheers

Basic solar = battery / container,  x mtr wire & crimps, regulators, volt / amps meter ..
Light strips  = battery,  wire x mtr & crimps ,switches, volt / amps meter, mounts etc ..
Ensuite =  toilet / shower tents .
Range of collapsible silicone space saver products
Dont forget accessories for the women, anything that  they would like / need to make camping easier . baskets, wash tubs, clothes lines, toilet / shower accessory camp gear.. ;D

Still going...

Also - Maybe strike a deal with GG for stocking security cables & Sarah for canvas bags?

Supply and install water pumps (Fynspray) & 12v.

Depending on what market you want to target - be the font of knowledge and products including maintenance e.g. wheel bearing replacement etc for all things CT related - not just your own brand.

Ps Edz - obviously single or maybe secure in the knowledge he wife doesn't check this thread??

How about annex floor mesh...   The cleaver brand that has 2 x layers of mesh so that the sand and dirt goes in - but doesn't come back...      These things are relatively expensive; but really work btw..  (At least I am very pleased with mine).

Have a demo bed with some sand from Big Red...   I have seen the effectiveness of the product demonstrated using some novel iconic Big Red sand.

Some of the things that are a bit unique that you see at camping and caravan shows...
A couple that come to mind is the guy with the (a) patented gutter system for water collection on annex roofs; (b) those fold down flat round grill plates; etc that are made from spun metal (I think?)

Sand Spear Pumps

A sat phone hire agency

Van insurance agency

Supa Peg agency

Area specific detailed maps

Good Quality First Aid Kits; Snake Bite Kits; Shark Repellent Spray    ;D

"Help Sheets" with lists - including "myswag.org"; "4wdaction.com.au"; "lowrange.tv"; etc

Rock and a hard place...

Those places listed above only stock cheap disposable Shit these days...

And if you went the other way and if you stocked QUALITY (if you can find it anymore) gear most wouldn't buy it as they only shop on price..

Like Tim did on our Flinders trip... 2 chairs $20 ea from the 4b show... with his comment if they break, I wont have lost $100ea..  His chair died first night, and his wife's died 3rd night. needless to say he was in Shit for the rest of the trip..

Rays and BCF don't fit and install UHF's/HF's etc do they?

Coming from someone who is prob one of the worst businesses you could ever want to get into LOL I give the following advice.

Having all sorts of different products in your showroom is fine, prob is that all the companies listed above will not give much of a trade discount unless you buy bulk , this means capital and lots of it, then you will find some on line seller with no costs will also have that product and undercut you, the parent company will happily list you as a distributor and people will come to your showroom look all over the product you have paid for and then go home shop on line and buy it elsewhere. Great for the parent company.great for on line seller, great for purchaser..BAD for you.

the parent company is happy as they don't care who sells their product or where from as they are paid the moment it leaves the warehouse, you will be left holding the baby on $$$$ worth of stock that is gathering dust.

Ask yourself what you would buy at time of sale of a camper and what you would go home and research and buy later..then stock stuff from the first list.

Jet ;D ;D ;D

Big expensive items most people will think about and source from the cheapest vendor at their chosen quality level.

Where you will make money is the impulse purchases that go with a new camper.   Or am I the only one who can't walk out of the shop without some essential items for my new pride and joy?

Didnt read all the lists sorry. Collapsible sink and buckets like the ones aldi have that type of design. What I havent been able to find in the big stores mentioned is a small dish draining rack. As we have a plastic tub sink would be good to have one that fits inside that. I think Scarps said he got his at a camping show. I see someone mentioned ozpig not sure if they still do but used to have a become a distributor section on their web site. Will think of other things that are better I am sure lol

this was pretty much my thinking also, Redcherokee must have read my mind...lol.
Only other thing i'd add is spares for the trailer itself, like having the correct wheel bearings there and maybe a jockey wheel that suits the trailer for when someone wrecks there's.
as said already, smaller priced items that people will buy on impulse, rather then big ticket items that they'd go home and start researching prices for.

31.5 W X 36.8 L X 5 cm collapsed and 13 cm High expanded   [ Easy home brand # 50434]
If you didnt want the tub section you could always cut it away and just use the drainer tray section [ 24.5 cm W x 30 cm L ].

Ive been working on a product for the last 12 months, no one has come up with the solution to date. I can't come up with the solution yet (one size fits all). But if I do, it will be the second patterned product of mine and i will be retired within 12 months...............I'm 47 years of age.

A  latex or soft silicone insert should fix that with inflatable sleeves for added grip .. Glow in the dark or fitted with a small button battery for flashing LED in the extension ...comes in a variety of colors and ..... What !!!  no hang on think someone in china  already beat you to it .. ;D

A suggestion, top quality no B Shit service, maybe rather than having a huge amount of stock, a wide range of catalogues for people to choose from. Get the stuff in on time and fitted correctly.
I know my local mechanic will get stuff in, his prices are the same or sometimes a bit higher/lower that what I would get them for, but the service/knowledge is always top notch, that's why I always go back.

just my 2c worth

Best wishes with the new venture

The first one is within the soft window furnishing industry, a safety product for government housing. We have only gone state and yet to go national.
The second product is to do with 4wd's. I'm tight lipped about it as you can appreciate, there is no one size fits all product on the market to combat this problem.

As a side to what you want to do with stocking these accessories, don't underestimate the power of colour co-ordination for spontaneous purchases.

If you can stock a product that will somewhat colour match to the camper your selling I reckon you are more likely to make a sale then and there.

I'm really am not that way inclined at all (seriously not even remotely ocd) , but my shower/toilet tent, ropes, colapsible bucket, hotwater system 15a lead etc were all spontaneous buys cause they were a similar colour to the camper

I have so little willpower . If only they made 6b&s in blue and white
