Well,
Come end of September, we'll be renting the house in Kingscliff and heading up to Mackay for a few years. Wife has scored big time in her employment so off we go. It's a fantastic opportunity for her and an adventure for us as well. Son is devastated as he's leaving his mates, all his sports and worst of all, beach's with awesome surf. He's pretty shattered but he's started googling Barra spots in Mackay and looking at Cruise Craft 650 Outsiders to hit the Trout and Emporer with!!!!!! Just gotta win lotto.
As for 9 yo daughter, well who knows, one minute she's excited, next crying????
Anyhow, looking forward to catching up with the Swaggers from the area. Another bad aspect of moving now also is that we can't do the National meet, so if anybody wants a powered site please contact me.
Thanks to Brett/Jillsy and Paceman for their advice given.
Dave

Spent two years in Mackay and loved every minute. It has everything you need and is a great gateway to an amazing part of the world being the Whitsundays.
-
You'll love it mate. Mackay was a bit big & busy for us but you don't have to live there. There're plenty of quieter places on the outskirts.
As said, there's everything you need in town & plenty to do out.
Also, plenty of good schools in Mackay too. Prices have stalled too, so it's a good time to move there.
Lots of sport, AFL is surprisingly big there too.
You best win lotto (after I do 😉), that big boat will come in handy! Small boats are even handier up there though!
Good luck with it all, maybe we can have a beer if I'm lucky enough to get back while you're up there

You'll have to change your forum name though. this is Cowboys country ?
Seriously though I've been here 27 years & wouldnt want to go anywhere else, though must warn you it is the rip off captial of Queensland & with the mining downturn is suffering economically.
One thing the the rents have halved in some places so you'll be able to pick & choose.
Hope you like it here and welcome

Don't worry I'm a passionate Cowboys fan also. It's funny, son is happy that he'll play U13's back in QLD as it makes him eligible for Maroons in SOO. Got to love his passion as he was worried he'd have to play for a team on the Goldy next year just in case he grows up to be origin player.!! Nothing like putting cart before the horse.

Three problems with Mackay.
Housing is expensive, all the transitory workers are driving housing through the roof, even simple houses are phenomenally expensive.
And if you are working up there, all the great time for fishing and touring is taken up with that most annoying drain on your time..........work
The other thing is the weather, perfect in winter, spring and autumn, but dam hot in summer, real hot, hot hot hot and humid.
But a few months in that is more than made up for with the rest of the perfect year.
Fishing is supreme, get in with some locals and head out to the reefs, they stay overnight in open tinnies, sleeping under the stars and fishing flat out. Its a long trip out and back, but believe me the fishing is well worth it.
Enjoy, you may end up selling up and staying

not sure where you live, but housing in mackay is very cheap at the moment. it was expensive a while ago, but at the moment, it's a buyers market.
happy to help out , broncos11... glad to hear that the employment side got sorted for you...
and by the looks of your forum name, i thought you supported the right team... >:D happy to support the cows, though (if the broncs aren't playing... :) )

X2
There are some real bargains to be had here in both the rental market & buyers market.

When's the "Going Away Party"?
-
Yep with the housing.
Have looked at some great rentals On net around Bucasia, Blacks Beach area etc and rental prices are nearly half of what we'll get for our house in Kingy. Which is music to our ears obviously.
Already have done the most important thing and that's got Patrick into a cricket team. He told me that was priority No. 1!!!!!!!!
Kids will go to Holy Spirit and adjacent primary school.
QLD Education is being fantastic with moving assistance also.
Now, I just have to find a job!!

Ya know if still came to the Nat Meet, we could make that you're going away party.
Friggin good idea or what.

Too right! He'll have his boat with him!

I can tell you Mackay has all the services you'll need and is quite easy to navigate. Lots of fishy options too. Kinchant, teembra and eungella for some fresh dam action. The market is in a downtrend with mining cutting back from the heady days a few years back. A mate sold up and left 6 months ago and the same area has seen another 20% fall in housing prices since then...
Lucky to get out with the 150k loss that they did. Ouch.
-
I left 12 months ago. Loved the town. Just watch the drivers

Oh and we're from Pottsville but currently a bit further north in Ayr NQ. Just listed our place in potty but no plans to set up roots again up here. Just a year off travelling to fill the bank and hit the road again.

Hope all works out nicely for you and the family Dave, you're moving from a pretty nice location...even if it is in roach land.
-
Finally my beer, prawns & fishing holes are all mine again. :cup:

How the hell are you going to get a feed of fish now????

You're now me and my sons official new bestie!!!!!!!
Jump on the classifieds here. Do you think I should keep my boat. I was going to sell and replace with tinny as I thought that's best for up there and maybe get an outside boat down the track???

Jeezus the bloody mossies and midgies must be bad up that way. Glasses, gloves, biker mask, longsleeves etc etc, either that or someone doesnt want to be recognized ;D
-
And I took my hat off for the pics. I work outside 5 days a week on and around water edz, last thing I need is more sun exposure...the sun is harsh up here.
-
Keep your boat. If you take that one out of the Tweed bar then there's nothing to trouble it up here. Lots of close reef bommies and islands around Mackay. Fuel usage/range might be your only concern with the big 2 banger, there is a lot of inshore and offshore options. You can't go too far up the river, imagine tweed bar to the bridge is about all there is accessible all tides. Almost all creeks are very shallow and pretty short like Cudgen creek. More to find exploring the coast.
-
I have a 4.1 and really need a 4.8+ to make the most of this coastline. Lots of little creeks with no land access. Check out Google earth to see what I mean.

Okay, to all our Mackay members. Cath's employer has given us 1 months rental assistance to find a permanent place. That's great but we're struggling to find somewhere for a month that will take a dog also. Will probably just end up forgoing this offer and trying to find a permanent rental ASAP. If anybody does however know of any possibilities for us that first month can you PM me please. I've thought of a cabin at the Big 4 there which is pet friendly, but makes it hard if I'm out looking for both a place to live and work with a dog in tow :D :D

Mate, what sort, how big is ya dog? We've got a fenced yard but not huge but we aer near the beach. So we may be able to dog sit during the week, so to speak. One side of fence is not overly high so if hes a jumper may not be suitable. Also depending on footy results may head to Townsville if Cowboys are playing home finals but that would only be weekends.
Just a thought & offer is there

Hey Moggy,
That's an awesome offer, but I think we're leaning to just trying to organise a house we can move straight into. If you dont mind, I might send you a few houses from the net that Grab our interest and get your opinion on location etc?????
Can you PM me your email??
Thanks Dave

So....are you up here yet? I was just down near Mackay for the weekend. Rolled the swag out at Kinchant Dam. Only a couple of quick sessions on the dam for 2 missed hits. Caught up with some buddies from down south over a camp fire and a few frothies. You'll be in Fishin heaven if you like to toss lures for Barra and Sootys in the fresh.

Roo, Dave was at Kinchant having a sticky beak with the young fella on Sunday! He's on his way down to us at the moment due to a family members ill health. I'll let him know you kept in touch.
