Title: Keeping mattress dry
Post by: stabicraft on August 01, 2015, 09:09:22 PM
I have a nice refurbished cub camper and I need some advice.
When packing up the camper wet, how do I keep the mattress dry?
The tent don't leak when it rains, its just packing a wet tent onto the mattress that is the issue.

I was thinking a tarp over the mattress and tucked in all around, but I'm not sure if this is successful or not.

I cant sleep on vinyl so please don't suggest a vinyl covered mattress, and my mattress is a queen size.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

We use a fitted mattress protector plastic/cloth over the top, doona and pillows under as well.

When we had the KK we had one of the rubber backed picnic rugs that we threw over the bed before pack up.

We bought some of that thick plastic from Clarke Rubber.  We store in the drawers and if packing wet lay it of the bed (complete cover) until we arrive home or the next location.

Does the trick

We have a trackabout safari Extenda, and the mattress sits inside a canvas bedbag. The mattress, doona, pillows, kids sleeping bags, all fit in then zip it up. Keeps every thing dry.

Not sure if these are commercially available or a trackabout custom.

Complete Campsite have the canvas bed bag as standard, excellent idea

We gave a canvas bed bag in our camper as well. If it's really cold at night we sleep under it as well

We used to have a hard sided waterbed. Inside the frame was a heavy duty plastic liner - in this sat the water bed bladder.  Did away with the bed eventually but kept the plastic liner.  This has shaped corners and is slightly larger than a queen size mattress.  Folds up very neatly and is perfect to fit over the mattress and bedding in the camper if the canvas is wet.  if this equipment finally becomes unserviceable I will be investing in the canvas cover for the bed.
Cheers,

Cheap picnic blanket.  The advantage over a tarp is you can see which side is which so you avoid putting damp side on bed, and on really cold nights it has been used as an extra blanket!

Thanks guys
I took your advice and purchased a Cheap tarp from Bunnings and we plan to turn it into a fitted plastic sheet to go over the bed when packing a wet tent.

Like to waterbed bladder idea though, Ill have to look around and see whats out there.

Thanks again
