Title: How do you pack your long life milk?
Post by: IanC on July 27, 2015, 11:28:55 AM: Hi all

I have been told that tetra packs like long life milks etc do not travel well.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to take these items. Unfortunately I cannot buy lactose free powdered milk.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Put them in a plastic shopping bag ( or two ) just in case !

Yep. Corrugations kill the UHT tetra packaging. They will also cause the 2L plastic milk containers to fail if you hit enough corrugations. The 1L plastic ones last a lot better.

The UHT packs are designed to sit in your pantry at home, not travel lots of k's in your camper.

We don't bother with UHT milk any more. We carry enough proper milk for our needs, and some powdered stuff for emergencies.

Post by: MDS69 on July 27, 2015, 12:44:01 PM: We took enough 1L long life milk containers for a 4 week trip from Sydney across Oodnadatta Track to Yulara back through Lamberts Centre, Finke, Mt Dare, across the Simpson into Birdsville then down the Birsdville track with no issues. Ours was stored in a 60L plastic tub. Actually still had some left over when we got home. As far as brand we like Devondale the best.

Post by: gclan on July 27, 2015, 12:52:27 PM: We've taken plenty of 1L cartons on corrugations just packed into plastic tubs and (touch wood) haven't ever had a problem. I usually make use of all of the stubby holders we seem to collect on our travels by putting cans, bottles, jars etc... in them to protect them.
The old rubber band around them also seems to work. Devondale is my favourite too.

The stubby coolers, of which we seem to have many....work a treat on so many things. I have taken the bottoms out of them and tuck them into the door pocket in our car. Keeps my glasses, hand held radio, sunscreen, bushmans etc handy upright and not rattling!

I have also wrapped items in the non slip mat with rubber bands.

It seems that the trick is to keep them tightly packed. But I will definitely do the extra plastic bag as a precaution.

Post by: Desert lover on July 29, 2015, 07:44:33 AM: Open one in the fridge. Unopened in the plastic "supplies" tub in the camper. We have never had a problem (touch wood) even over lots of corrugations. As long as they are well packed in should be ok. If in doubt then put some padding between them.

I do like the stubby holder idea though.

Those which were on their sides leaked, those which were packed snugly and standing up didn't (8000km to top of Cape York &, side trips and back in June-July this year). That was about 1000km of dirt, co0uldn't comments on something like the CSR.

It's funny that those on the side will leak but those standing up are fine. We will only have 1 litres as that's what our nilk comes in. Will keep tightly packed and see how we go.
