Hi everyone. I have some questions about Bribie if anyone would be kind enough to help. I have searched old threads but found info that only helps if you know the area.
Hubby has the Friday off for the Show Holiday that we get for the Ekka here in the South Burnett and sprung the suggestion on me last night that we go to Bribie for the weekend.
He will leave Friday morning and take the Flamingo and I will leave after work Friday and take the boat. (Lol, two cars three hours each way ??? we must be mad!)
My questions are;
Where is there to stay? Do we play it safe and stay at a caravan park or are there other camping options?
Can we launch the boat close to the caravan park if this is the only camping option.
We have not been to Bribie so have NO idea what is on offer so apologise if these questions seem silly.
He also suggested that we drive down this weekend for a 'scouting' trip so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Bribie Island is fantastic, we go there quite often. We do stay in the National Park and access to the camp sites are 4wd only not sure if that is an issue for you or not.
Information on the National Parks camp sites can be found here - http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/bribie-island/camping.html (http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/bribie-island/camping.html)
Can't help with caravan parks as we don't visit them, but I'm sure someone will be along to provide you some info on the options on Bribie Island.

there are 3 van parks to choose from
1 Woorim - This si a big park and not to bad although close to the surf beach it will be a 12-15min drive to launch the boat over the other side of the island so not my choice if you want to do some boating
2 Along the esplande is the other camp ground - it gets very packed but is in a prime spot like across the road from the boat ramp and shops etc..this would be very good for the boat is on calm side of island.
3 Across from sandstone point hotel just prior to the bridge is another van park, it has 2 boat ramps and the marina just there, although not tech on the island it is a good spot for boaties as there are 2 ramps and your in the water in secxonds without to many crowds , walk distance toi the best pub in the area too.
Camping
On the surf beach at woiorim - no good if you want to take the boat
Poverty point - ok if you have a very small boat but no good if you cant carry it sort of thing
My advice would be either van park 2 or 3 with 2 having a nice feel and good location along the esplanade you cant go wrong and then scope out the others for your next trip.
Hope that helps somewhat
jet ;D ;D

Thanks Jet and Gutters!!
This info is exactly what I was after. I would love to camp on the beach but the convenience of launching the boat make the van parks sound like the way to go.
Van Park 2 or 3 sound pretty good. Perhaps 2 would be better for the young one to have a swim?
Thank you for the info, local knowledge is greatly appreciated.

yep poverty is a good spot we have anchored at times 18' and 24' boats there with no problems.
boat ramp is not far from the bridge and pub
the tide goes out a fair way probably 50-70 meters and quite muddy for the last 20 meters or so.
4wd access and permits are required
mozzies can be bad so take the coils ect
fires permitted
the kids and I free on sunday for a drive if you would like a guide
edit in fact i might go anyway boy wonder has been bugging me for a fish

Jet, or others, I can't find anything on the internet about this camping area. Does it have a name? It sounds like a good first time visit place to camp with the boat.
Thanks again for the replies.

my guess is Theo is talking about the Bongaree Caravan Park, but best let him confirm that

Rumpig is on the money ,
here is the link I was just to lazy before to find it LOL..
First time trips to a region need to have high and low water access as a minimum IMHO if taking your boat, as Green RV said you can with good knowledge and permitting tides use a boat from poverty ..
but for ease of use and a good first time trip Bongaree gets my nod.

Thanks Jet and Rumpig, you're both legends!
Now to see if they have any sites available for that weekend!!

Unless you have a big boat and planning on fishing offshore, leave the boat at home and camp on the ocean side camping area and fish off the beach. In my opinion, on average I do just as well off the beach as I do in the Bribie passage in our boat.

i heard recently that fires are now permitted on surfside (in rings provided) is this true???

You heard correct as fires are now allowed. I think they got sick of every 2nd person having illegal fires all around the camp sites leaving charcoal in the sand, so now they have provided fire rings.

Thanks again for the insider info. I have been able to book at Bongaree despite their website saying they were booked out that weekend so that's exciting. Thanks Beachman about the fishing tip - it would save fuel too!
I will pass on that info to HWMBO and see how we go.
-
Mozzies won't be a problem this time of the year. ;D

You will be very close to food places there also as well as the RSL = about 1klm. If a SW is blowing, it will make things interesting for you with launch and retrieval of the boat. ;D

You little rippa!!!
Now I have somewhere to go and test out the new ute setup and camp with a fire!!!

Thanks everyone for your tips. It looks like a weekend to look forward to.
Adam, thanks so much for your offer of a guide. We are tied up fencing now so are unable to come down for a drive.
At least the new fences will mean we can go away that weekend with less animals to worry about feed wise. :cup:

That looks awesome!!!
Quick question - where do I get permits from? I assume I will need a fishing permit and also a beach driving permit. Internet or local store?
Thanks.

On the road into Bribie Island there is a bait shop on the left hand side that sells beach permits, plus go can get some fresh worms at the same time for some bait.

Quick question Beachman.
Do you get beach worms on the Eastern Beach? Probably a bit difficult if the traffic's as bad as mentioned!

Hi Steve, I’m hopeless at worming but one of my mates normally catches a few worms in front of the camping areas on the Eastern beach and Pippies are extremely rare.

Thanks mate!
Back in the 50's & 60's my grandparents lived at Woorim & so I got to see & do a fair bit of fishing there. I didn't hear the term "Pipi" until the late 60's, early 70's as the term "Eugarie" was used.
We would all head down at the right tide & do the eugarie twist to supply bait to my father & grandfather. The eugaries were plentiful then, as were the fish. I can't remember a time when my grandfather came home empty handed. Nor can I remember anyone worming ???
(My grandfather was one of reclusive artist Ian Fairweathers very few friends.)

Thanks everyone for their help. I have been slack and not updated.
We ended up going to Bribie - at the last minute Hubby ended up having to work on the Friday so we did not get away as early as we wanted. We left the boat at home due to the unexpected change but lucky enough a guy hubby works with was taking his down on the Saturday and invited us to join them for a fish.
The park itself is at a great spot, straight across the road from the beach. Unfortunately the park is not for me. I have stayed in a couple now since we had the van but this is the first 'city' park we have been to. It was extremely packed, we had been told there would be room on the site for the boat also but their was hardly any room for the van and ute let alone a boat. The vans were literally right against each other, there was even a van parked lengthways at out back so the three vans formed a U. This also meant we had a view of vans and the toilet block only.
We were directly across from the amenities block which was handy except for all the grey nomads coming home from the bowls club at all hours. Each group stopped for a pit stop and their friends chatted outside our van while waiting. This made fro some very disrupted night. lol
Hubby, son and I got to go fishing on the boat which was quite an adventure, until November last year I had never been on a boat at all except when I was 10 whale watching. I freely admit I am a little hooked. (No pun intended.) Unfortunately not much was biting and at lunch the little fella and I left hubby to it. They went further out for the rest of the day.
The next day hubby went out and they went over to Morton which was pretty exciting for him. The little one and I explored Bribie. The first beach we went to had gooey 'things' all over it, hundreds of them, I was not sure if they were stingers or not so didn't risk it, off we went again. My boy really wanted to go swimming but it was ssssssoooooo cold. Excitingly enough, we SAW DOLPHINS. Yah, that was pretty cool. After cooking lunch, we had literally dropped a line when hubby rang to say they were back. We tried fishing near a park and then just on dark the three of us tried fishing off the wall. No luck but when there are about 30 people fishing in a small area I didn't expect much to happen.
The next day we scrambled around packing up and then succumbed to the begging of a 7yo who so much wanted to swim. We headed over to the other side of the island and let him swim in the surf. He loved it. We ended up leaving there when we should have been getting home. Ooops.
All in all, it was heaps of fun but we will keep looking for another spot. Hervey bay is the next venture I think. We probably wont get a chance to even think about it until after Christmas but I can't wait.

Hi Rocknj
Thanks for the lovely post... It was a great read...
I grew up on Bribie (Woorim) - spent all my school holidays there at least. and reading about your 7yo's and your family adventures; had all the memories flooding back...
-
;D
You are very welcome, I was worried the post would come off as too negative. I am glad it brought back positive memories for you.
-
No need to apologise or feel bad in relation to your post as you gave your opinion and everyone is entitled to that. I love my trips to Bribie camping up the beach, but I guarantee if I visited Bribie and stayed in a Caravan park (doesn’t matter which one) I Guarantee I would also being giving an average review on my trip.
I know I’m not a Caravan Person just like some of my mates cringe at the thought of camping somewhere without Showers/Plumbed toilets and power for their TV.
Least you got out and experienced somewhere new.
-
I know that caravan park you stayed at... Have watched it
evolve devolve since the 1960's.... Its even been on more than one current affairs show on TV ... re: the one foot in the gravers being angst over Council charges and machinations....
