Title: Fraser Island beach camping booking - new limitations and zones
Post by: chisel on July 16, 2015, 03:36:03 PM
http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/park-alerts/13649.html (http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/park-alerts/13649.html)

Previously there were no limits on camper numbers for beach camping on Fraser and you didn't need to nominate a zone to camp in.
So not only do you now need to book ahead for busy times you also need to nominate where you are going to camp and if the weather turns crappy you are stuck with the zone you chose.  You're also stuck if all the remaining sites when you arrive are of the crappy type.   On the bright side at least there should be sensible numbers in each zone and therefore your chances of getting a good site should be pretty good.... in theory.

I wonder how far ahead you need to book to ensure a spot in peak school holiday periods (September, Xmas, Easter).

once again, same as anywhere in Qld, what happens if you turn up and someone else is in your place and they tell you to **** off....

Might be good for people who have been there before and know the good/bad areas... What if you've never been?

****ing stupid system.

Good point! There are definitely better sites than others in each camping zone & definitely better zones than others, especially in a stiff Sou-Easter, but if you're just nominating a zone, than it's not much different to the present system, as the likelihood of someone beating you to the cream is currently pretty high anyway.

So this sucks A**e  big time, 27 odd beach camping zones on the island reduced to 9, So theres a fair chance your favourite camp zones will be off limits or over run anyway for those that go regular .. >:(
One of the main bits of the magic of Fraser is the fact you can usualy  find a camp spot in the different zones to suit you if the weather / beach conditions  are a bit foul when you get there if needed etc ..

EDIT UPDATE :  May not be as bad as first thought, went and checked the updated booking site, all current Zones still there but now Gouped into 9 seperate zones..  All the western side seems to be as was ..  The Map has not been updated with the new zone groups ..

NEW ZONE GROUPS : #1  = Govi & Wongai
                                 : #2  = One tree, Cornwall, Gabala
                                 : #3  = Poyungan, Winnam
                                 : #4  = Guluri, Eli
                                 : #5  = Maheno, Wahba
                                 : #6  = Eugarie, Yurru, Guruman
                                 : #7  = Wyuna, Burad
                                 : #8  = Marloo, Ocean Lake, Duling
                                 : #9  = Dirray, Carree

I will check it out on the computer tomorrow.......sounds like they are moving to the same concept that's on Moreton. I reckon Moreton works well.

It is an issue if you want to rain around without a fixed/home base.

I still recon they should double the camping fees and half the number of campers.

They get more than enough out of the fees and permits cash cow, for the place now as it is, Dont go giving the possums any more stupid ideas !!
As for halving numbers I doubt it would ..

Absolutely correct.....

there's plenty of money to go around. ..     look at the average  $#@%&  holidaying in our natural resources  (aka national parks and state forests. ..)       Many of these spend squillions on their 4wd and van etc.......    So its rarely about no money to afford a holiday with the kids.....     Then this argument ignores the money burnt on the pokies; lotto; booze and smokes and other mindless or addictive pursuits. ..   That makes it enen more of a joke that our nps and sf have to get (overworked) ...  on dirt cheap sales --  particularly the ones nearer to the big cities or otherwise naturally beautiful. ....

The genuinely poor could still get in cheap via quoting their health care card or whatever. ....... and yes its our country. .. but ask what you can do for it....   rather than the selfish discrimination of how $#@% spends their cash.....

What's it to be? ????     Be willing to fairly pay our way (centrelink industry maybe exempted )..... or "bludge" off our natural resources in favour of the next bit of kit for the fourby......   or the next pull on the pokies.....

I go to both Moreton & Fraser a fair bit & it's a pity I can't get a "Combined Yearly Permit" for them, maybe even including Bribie. It would make life a lot easier when the wife & I make a last minute decision to get away on some spare time. I got a multiple desert park permit in Sth Oz so why not here?
More income I suppose from separate permits.

Tassie also has the one permit system to enter pretty much all their National Parks, yes it would be nice if Qld did the same thing.
