Title: Awning, passenger or driver's side?
Post by: Belly68 on June 29, 2015, 04:32:39 PM
Hi,
I am about to mount my awning to my roof racks and was wondering which side seems to be the best and why?   Looking forward to the replies.

Driver's side as that's my side of the car and used the most.
I only normally walk around to the passenger side to open the door for swmbo, so as said, the driver's side gets the most use........

Ours in on a dual cab and on passenger side our canopy on the tub has one lift up window which is the side we put the fridge in. This is also passenger side so if we do a swag trip awning is on same side as fridge etc.  I am sure there are other reasons we put it on that side but mostly convenience at set up

i have also mounted on drivers side
but most people have mounted on passenger side
works ok for me i can park besides my mates facing the same way and join to make one large cover

a bloke i know mounted a small one behind the headboard on his GQ ute, pulls out to the back of his tray and uses it when sleeping in the back

passenger side, always best for the missus to be able to get in dry than myself i reckon. also its easier for the rear door set up on my pov pack barn door 80.

Last car the awning was on the passenger’s side and my current car it’s in the driver’s side. Only reason for the swap is seeing we now sit on the driver’s side of the car it’s easier changing radio stations/winding up/down power windows.

Apart from that no difference and when we do a day trip on the beach I still look to see what direction the wind is blowing to see in the drive or reverse into our spot as always set up the awning going with the wind.

I have always rolled out the swag on the passenger side so that's where I put mine.    On my last trip I bought a second one for the driver's side for my son's swag.
So there's the solution; buy two.

Passenger side: safety issu as it is away from the road when parked.

When one departs the drivers seat to open the door for ones special passenger . One must take care to provide a safe environment for your special passenger to alit to  . Left side is the correct placement from a safety of passenger , shade/weather protection & should be set up before said passenger is escorted to the environment .

or where it works best for you

my last one was on the passenger side, but come time to remount it on my new vehicle, your idea has merit IMHO. Have had to turn the vehicle around several times now to mate awnings together for one big undercover area, so it's something I'll consider now.

Like Patr80l,
I have one on either side, if I choose to go away without the Trckabout, I can set up a kitchen on one side and swags on the other.

Like the majority we have it on the passenger side. Figure that if we want to pull up on the side of the road for a lunch or cuppa stop then we can have shade and be safely away from traffic

Ours is on the drivers side. The snorkel is on this side too, so it makes sense to watch both when driving through tight tracks.

At the end of the day, I don't think it really makes much difference.

Thanks for all the replies, I have a prado so I think like D4D it makes sense to have it on the passenger side with the way the door opens.

Mine's passenger side.  I would have mounted one on each side but the mob who make mine went out of business and I can't have two different ones! (OCD)

I have mine on the passenger side. Only reason if I ever had to pull over on the side of the road for any reason we could still have temporary shade

A lot of people say passengers side so they can use it on the side of the road. How often do you do this?

I wouldn't be game to pull off the side of the road and set an awning up; I'd rather be at least 10 meters off the road

My thoughts exactly as 99% of the time when we pull off the road for morning/tea lunch we use parks/rest areas which are off the road and use the tables provided or park under a tree and stand while we eat to stretch the legs.
