Title: Hard floor camper withs kids
Post by: brispaj on June 08, 2015, 08:49:07 PM
Hi all,
Just spent a day at the Brisbane camping show looking at FF campers. Come home and have done a lot of looking on line, and am now thinking maybe RF might also be n option. Now my only concern (and the main reason I was looking ff over rf) is that I have 2 boys (6&1) and a little concerned about sleeping arrangements. We currently have a bloody huge soft floor so this isn't an issue currently. My thoughts was to use a bunk on one side or across the back (prob not enough room).
How have others with kids and hard floors managed?

Hi brispaj,

I have a Cub spacematic. I can fit two full size stretchers on the floor (foldout roof) along with the queen size bed in the normal spot. Still have room to move in the camper

Please see photo from m y camper thread for photos of stretchers set up inside to give
You an idea.

We have a pioneer longreach.
The bunks fit lengthways,  with room to move.
However we actually just cut 100mm off the length of them, and had the canvas cut down to suit so they now fit along the width, which suits better. They will fit side by side as well but not leaving much room.
We also have the attachable kids tent that we use for stays longer than a few nights, and that gives heaps of room.
Bunks fit with plenty of height,  room next to them for stuff, and leaves the hard floor clear.

We use bunk beds on one side of the hard floor of our Aussie Swag. Been using this arrangement for 10 years now but nearly time to change due to age of kids (17 yo Daughter & 14 yo Son).

Bunks setup for camping.

Bunks packed away. We leave the bunks semi assembled for ease of setup / pack down. Just remove the uprights and legs and then rotate the cross mount outwards so it lies flat.

Only issue is during trips where it gets extremely cold (like the desert mid year). We then have to have some form of insulation under the sleeping bags to prevent the cold from rising up.

Another one with a cub hard floor, we use two stretchers with a decent self inflating mattress on top.

The stretchers are great , kids 6&9 get a great nights sleep.

We did the same as Grungle in our Kimberley Kamper. We also have the kids room for longer stays.

With regards to keeping kids warm on stretchers - we used single bed underlay mattress protectors under there sleeping bags on the stretcher. Just hook the elastic bits that normally go around the single mattress onto corners of stretcher. Also a polar fleece blanket on top of sleeping bag if needed.

We put some carpet on the hard floor to stop the cold coming up through it (it just sits in place & is shaken out and stored on the bed during pack up) and the kids sleep on self inflating mattresses in sleeping bags on the floor. I can't be bothered setting up stretchers myself, the less I set up whilst camping the better.
I work on the theory that inside the camper is for sleeping only really, so happy to have minimal room for getting dressed in..though obviously not everybody will like this school of thought

We've recently paid the deposit on a Cub Spacevan with bunks for our family of five (living on the road). We seriously considered a FF but decided weight, lack of storage and reduced awning space on the living side were not what we wanted. We don't pick it up until December, but we're happy with our decision.

Kids are 5, 4 and 18m.

Is this the one with permanent bunks and a double bed across the front of the van?
Is the van wide enough for that?

How much $$$ overall?  Looks pretty good for a "lightweight-ish" offroad-capable hardfloor that can sleep 5 ok.

Our now 9-year old sleeps in the KK, while the 12-year old has her own tent.

We use 2 options with 3 kids in the Campomatic.
1. Double bunks for the older girls (6&10) s a.l mattress on floor for baby (2).
2. Double mattress on the floor for kids to share in individual sleeping bags. This worked alright over the long weekend.

2 kids in a hard floor is easy. 3 is proving more difficult!

Our son (3) has his own swag and has it set up across the end on the floor, you could put another beside that easily.
Very quick and easy, just roll it out and your done.

Thanks everyone on the guidance, but the minister of war and finance has now pulled the pin, that being said she has given the go ahead to spend more on the current camper(soft floor) and tow tug
